what might have caused the engine to detonate. High temper- atures and low humidity? Bad (low octane) gas in Baker? Or did a recent tuneup at a prominent Porsche dealership leave the engine running too lean or with too much spark advance? Not wanting to take chances, I decided to take my car to Sci- entific Automotive, a small Porsche repair shop, on Walnut Street in Pasadena, run by Roger Bursch, the man responsible for an extractor exhaust system that was all the rage among Porsche owners back then. A quiet, introspective man who set up and tuned Alan John- son’s 911S that won its class in the 1967 American Road Race of Champions at Daytona, Bursch knew his Porsches, hav- ing raced a 356 himself. But more importantly, his shop had a chassis dyno where Roger’s top tuneup tech, Bill Hanyon, would finesse the fuel mixture and ignition timing until the engine just screamed. And revved to the limiter, faster than you could say, “shift.” But that was after Bursch and company tore down the engine and replaced the two end pistons, one of which had a dime-sized hole in its crown. Over the years I would take my car only to Bursch, not just for tune-ups, but for more pressing repairs... like replacing the original chain tensioners with 930 Turbo units (during a Road & Track comparison test of old and new Porsches, Peter Egan, who drove my car with its worn, and noisy, tensioners, said it sounded like a bunch of keys in a washing machine). Although Bursch died three years ago at age 94, his legacy lives on, thanks to Jack Diramarian, who was just 18 when he went to work for Bursch in 1982 and bought Scientific Automotive from Roger when he retired in 1989. Diramarian, who moved the shop down Walnut Street to bigger quarters in 2013, is a Porsche person, just like Bursch, serving as presi- dent of the San Gabriel Valley Region of the Porsche Club of America.
