PORSCHE PROFILE • MARCH 2016 25 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race By Mike Mackenzie The biggest and best PCA Club Race lived up to its reputa- tion from February 4 through 7. I’m not sure of the actual count, but the total number of cars participating was close to 400, of which about 77 were in the Advanced Solo group. Most of us Floridians were freezing for much of the time but, of course, our northern visitors felt it was rather balmy.... Go figure! We also ran into a bit of rain during the weekend, but it did little to dampen the spirits of the eager crowd of racers. There was a major difference in this year’s event as com- pared to years past, in that there was no night racing this year. In order to fill the gap, Bob Dikman, Page Obenshain, and Dave Bassett put together a Friday-night “Speed Expo” which featured complementary beverages and food. Partici- pating vendors set up displays of their newest and best prod- ucts to entice the racers and, based upon the reports of the vendors and the racers, it was a very good Friday-night event. Also featured were videos of prior historic Sebring races from the ’60s and ’70s playing on the walls. Many people watched the videos, beverage in hand, for a large part of the evening. The Saturday-night dinner was crowded but excellent, and John Vita has now been anointed as permanent 48 Hours auctioneer. The live and silent auctions brought a lot of spir- ited bidding and raised a large amount of cash for the Ronald McDonald House. The evening was topped off by local band (Pinellas County) Benjamin Road, fronted by Suncoaster Cameron McKeever, with Tori Lewis stepping in with her tall bass. The band played without a break from about 9:00 to 11:00, and those who stayed enjoyed a great concert! It takes about 200 volunteers to put on this event every year. This year, the committee chairs were Dan Smithyman from Gold Coast and Grant Painter from Suncoast. Grant has advised that he is stepping down from the job, so a new Suncoast chair will be announced shortly. Congratulations Grant on a job well done.

EPA SEEKS TO PROHIBIT CONVERSION OF VEHICLES INTO RACECARS Washington, DC (February 8, 2016) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a regulation to prohibit conversion of vehicles originally designed for on-road use into racecars. The regulation would also make the sale of certain products for use on such vehicles illegal. The proposed regulation was contained within a non-related proposed regulation entitled “Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Medium- and Heavy- Duty Engines and Vehicles—Phase 2.” See more at: www.sema.org
