PREFACE CENSUS TAKING, IT HAS RECENTLY BEEN explained by the Census Commissioner for India, should be regarded primarily as a detached collection and presentation of certain facts in tabular form for the use and consultation of the whole country, and, for that matter, the whole world. Conclusions are for ot.hers to draw. It is upon this understanding of their purpose that Tables have been printed in this volume with only the ,barest notes necessary to explain such points as definitions, change of areas, etc. But perhaps the word , barest' is too bare and requires some covering. In the past it has been customary to preface the Tables with many pages of text, devoted to providing some general description of the area concerned and supported by copious Subsidiary Tables and comparisons with data collected in other provinces, countries and states. On this occasion there is no prefatory text, no provision of extraneous comparisons, and Subsidiary Tables have virtually been made part of the Tables themselves. We may agree that the present method of presentation has much to recommend it. Those who seriously study census statistics at least can be presumed to be able to draw their own deductions: they do not need a guide constantly at their side, and indeed may actually resent his well-intentioned efforts. All that they require are t,he bare facts. Yet such people must ever constitute a very small minority. 'Vhat of the others-the vast majority of the public? It is hardly to be expected that they can be lured to Census Tavern by the offer of such coarse fare. -

COLLINS MALAY DIALECT RESEARCH IN MALAYSIA: THE ISSUE OF PERSPECTIVE1 Introduction When European travellers and adventurers began to explore the coasts and islands of Southeast Asia almost five hundred years ago, they found Malay spoken in many of the ports and entrepots of the region. December 11th, 2019 Annex I: Enhanced ambition in national climate plans Under the Paris Agreement, Parties have been requested to present new or updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2020. In this context, 103 countries are responding to the urgent need to reduce emissions in the next decade by having communicated an enhanced NDC or signaling their intention to work towards enhancing the ambition of their NDCs by 2020. In addition, 11 Countries have started internal processes in their national plans and policies to boost ambition by 2020. The decisions to trigger the transformation to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement must be taken now; for this reason, other countries are encouraged to express their intention to join this list. Countries that will enhance ambition of their NDCs by 2020: • Afghanistan • Angola • Antigua and Barbuda1 2 • Argentina2 • Armenia2 • Bahamas1 • Bangladesh2 • Barbados1 • Belarus • Belize1 2 1 This country belongs to the SIDS 2020 Ambition Leadership Coalition, which promotes more ambitious climate action through new and updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the development of Long-term Low Greenhouse Gas Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) in Small Island Developing States in the context of the necessary means of implementation being made available. 2 This country is a member of the NDC Partnership. The following list of contemporary territories gives names as of 2012, dates of independence, names changed since independence, a selective list of colonial names, and colonial rulers since the late nineteenth century. It does not list names of all territories that were amalgamated in the early decades of colonial rule. Colonies that were part of the federations of French West Africa and French Equatorial Africa are marked (FWA) or (FEA). A slash under “Date of Independence” denotes that the process of independence from European empires was not accomplished in a single watershed event. Portugal in the Great War: the African Theatre of Operations (1914- 1918) Nuno Lemos Pires1 https://academiamilitar.academia.edu/NunoPires At the onset of the Great War, none of the colonial powers were prepared to do battle in Africa. None had stated their intentions to do so and there were no indications that one of them would take the step of attacking its neighbours. The War in Africa has always been considered a secondary theatre of operations by all conflicting nations but, as well shall see, not by the political discourse of the time. This discourse was important, especially in Portugal, but the transition from policy to strategic action was almost the opposite of what was said, as we shall demonstrate in the following chapters. It is both difficult and deeply simple to understand the opposing interests of the different nations in Africa. It is difficult because they are all quite different from one another. It is also deeply simple because some interests have always been clear and self-evident. But we will return to our initial statement. When war broke out in Europe and in the rest of the World, none of the colonial powers were prepared to fight one another. The forces, the policy, the security forces, the traditions, the strategic practices were focused on domestic conflict, that is, on disturbances of the public order, local and regional upheaval and insurgency by groups or movements (Fendall, 2014: 15). Therefore, when the war began, the warning signs of this lack of preparation were immediately visible. Let us elaborate. First, each colonial power had more than one policy. -
India—A Land of Contrasts Feels Safe and Comfortable
PAGE EIGHTEEN trip to India is everything it promises to be... and more!!! People who have Abeen there all offer –oddly enough- the same sage advice: “Look beyond the underlying poverty and let yourself be ‘seduced’ by this extraordinary country and its people. It will mark a ‘Before and After’ in your life and most assuredly you will be anxious to return”. This turned out to be my case… and that of all those who accompanied me on this extraordinary trip to India’s Golden Triangle: Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. India is color in the streets, in the saris, in the outdoor marketplaces… It is also spicy smells, fairy tale palaces, noise, crowds, street vendors selling everything imaginable, and overwhelmingly warm and friendly people. To begin with, I would say that it would be hard to find a more hospitable, open and gracious people than the Indians. With a broad and ready smile, they seem to be more than willing to help you, accompany you to where you are going or even pose for a photo. The country itself makes one feel at home and in these difficulties times, the traveler India—A Land of Contrasts feels safe and comfortable.
