Klugh went out and bought everything he could fihd by Atkins, learning the po- tential and range of the instru- ment by mimicking what he heard. It was through this pro- cess that Klugh developed his own distinctive finger-picking style, later to be influenced equally by Latin master Laurin- do Almeida. By age fifteen, Klugh was al- ready teaching guitar in a Detroit music store. It was there that Jazz giant YusefT Lateef first heard him and subsequently of- fered him a chance to record. Two years later, as a result of in- sider's word of mouth. Klugh had Joined guitarist George Benson's band, establishing a friendship that would last to this day. Klugh's next move was to Chick Corea's groundbreaking fusion outfit. Return To Forever, as a re- placement for Billy Conners. As an RTF alumnus. Klugh would al- ter make excellent use of his ed- ucation In electronics and rock/ Jazz hybrids. Departing Return To Forever In the early 70a, Klugh returned to Detroit where he began carving out his own stylistic territory, Qrst with a group called Th* Trto and later as a solo, artist oh Blue Note Records. His stint on the label yielded such classic Klugh Li'S as Dream Rone TVu^ finger Painting. Heart String, and the I pivotal Crazy For You, his first gold-selling effort. A switch to Capitol Records In 1979 yielded a series of acclaimed albums that teamed Klugh with re- nowned pianist/composer Bob James.

    LOUIS JOHNSON Approfondimenti a cura di Riccardo Pantella LOUIS JOHNSON “ THUNDER-THUMBS “ Quando si parla della tecnica dello Slap spesso vengono in mente i soliti nomi di grandi musicisti, ad esempio Larry Graham che si sostiene ne sia l’inventore. Ma è impossibile parlare di questa tecnica e non citare Louis Johnson, che di certo è stato uno dei pionieri ed ha contribuito a svilupparne la tecnica. Per via del suo stile distintivo venne soprannominato Thunder-Thumbs. Da non sottovalutare le sue numerose collaborazioni come session man. Tra le più importanti potremmo citare l’album “Thriller” di Michael Jackson. Probabilmente ciò che ha dato un grande contributo alla sua carriera è stata la sua ampia musicalità e senso ritmico. BIOGRAFIA Nato a Los Angeles il 13 Aprile del 1955, Louis fin da subito mostrò un forte interesse per la musica. Suo padre regalò presto una chitarra a lui e a suo fratello George, che subito cominciarono a suonare a turno. Louis era attratto dalle note gravi e cominciò a suonare le linee di basso che ascoltava sui dischi di artisti come James Brown, The Temptations and The Supremes.. Fu così che suo padre decise di regalargli un basso, e passò poco tempo prima che Johnson cominciò a strappare e percuotere le corde per dare più groove a ciò che suonava. Tutto questo si è evoluto nella tecnica dello Slap, rendendolo un musicista di fama mondiale. Mentre era ancora a scuola a Los Angeles, insieme al fratello George e il cugino Alex Weir formarono i “Three Plus One”. Band che si è subito evoluta in un contesto professionale condividendo palchi con artisti come The Supremes e Bobby Womack.

    HET ZACHTE AKOESTISCHE GITAARGELUID VAN EARL KLUGH Heel wat mensen in jazz vinden dat smooth jazz het label jazz niet waardig is. Het zou volgens hen meer een vorm van (meestal) instrumentale jazzmuziek zijn, waarbij een leuke melodie de hoofdbrok vormt en er geen ruimte over is voor improvisatie. Artiesten in dit segment hebben daar uiteraard onder te lijden, en dat is ook het geval voor de Amerikaanse gitarist Earl Klugh. Tussen 1972 en 1979 kwam er uit jazzfusion en meer pop- en urban gerichte stijl voort. Dat was voor een groot deel te danken aan Creed Taylor’s CTI label. Grover Washington’s ‘Mr. Magic’ en Bob James’ cover van ‘Feel Like Making Love’ uit 1974 zijn twee voorbeelden van wat toen eigentijdse jazz genoemd werd. Verschillende radiostations begonnen een show met die muziek te voorzien, zoals ‘Jazz Flavors’ van Russ Davis uit Altanta. Uiteindelijk werd op Valentijnsdag in 1987 in L.A. KTWV ‘The Wave’ gelanceerd als smooth jazz radiostation. Earl Klugh had echter in 1976 zijn debuut voor Blue Note Records uitgebracht, met zijn eigen instrumentale sound. Hij gebruikte elementen uit pop, country, soul en Latin en jazz en speelde die op akoestische gitaar. Niemand die toen dacht dat Earl’s muziek later als smooth jazz, instrumentale pop, eigentijdse jazz of fusion zou omschreven worden. Earl werd geboren in Detroit op 16/9/1954. Hij studeerde piano op driejarige leeftijd en pakte al op zijn tiende de elektrische gitaar beet. Later ging hij werken in een lokale muziekwinkel en bezocht samen met zijn moeder de Baker’s Keyboard Lounge.

The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain a definitive cause for such exclusion and use this information to identify a feasible path toward further integration of the harp in jazz and American pop music. This paper examines the state of the harp in jazz and American pop from various angles, including historical perspective, analytical assessment, and a study which compares harpists’ improvisational abilities to those of their mainstream jazz instrumentalist counterparts. These evaluations yield an encompassing view of the harp’s specific advantages and detriments in the areas of jazz and American pop. The result of this research points to a need for specialization among harpists, particularly in defining new styles. It is evident that harpists’ careers generally necessitate a working knowledge of various styles of music.
