WELCOME! From the Artistic Director It’s a thrilling time to program a jazz festival, and an honour to be a part of the team that executes the TD Markham Jazz Festival! Music is a conversation – a boisterous dialogue between artist and audience. It’s a shared experience we can collectively engage in and communicate through, to better understand our culture and ourselves. Jazz has been the vanguard of that conversation for decades. Luminaries like Stan Getz and Miles Davis are an example. Through exploration and improvisation, they seemed to be asking, “What’s next?” The dialogue continues today. Whether you define jazz as Bebop or Swing or Dixieland, our Festival aims to present contemporary artists who are seeking, discovering and pushing the boundaries of the genre. Our 2016 line-up kicks off with Canadian musical royalty – Molly Johnson in our Thursday opening night concert at the Varley Art Gallery, followed by Rich Brown’s JUNO-nominated project, The Abeng, on Friday night at the Millennium Bandstand. Imaginative and daring, The Abeng takes its name from the African instrument used by the Maroons of Jamaica to call the community together. A fitting start to the weekend. Hot on the scene are the Boxcar Boys and their inventive take on Dixieland, Klezmer and New Orleans jazz. Speaking of Klezmer, Japanese collective Jinta-la-Mvta entices with its unique blend of Japanese folk music and Jewish and Balkan musical traditions. Morgan Childs and his Quartet delve into the hard-swinging era of Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers to bring us a modern take on traditional swing. Other bands are creating whole new genres! Calling itself a trap-jazz collective, GAME.SET.TRAP combines jazz grooves, a horn section and a DJ to meld the worlds of hip-hop and jazz. Singer Tanika Charles carves a path between soul, R&B and jazz, while Dione Taylor navigates a landscape she calls “prairie-blues,” conjuring the sounds of roots music, traditional blues and folk. I am especially thrilled to showcase the 2017 National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Fellow, Dr. Lonnie Smith. Talk about a luminary! An unparalleled musician, composer and performer, Dr. Lonnie is an authentic master of the Hammond B3 organ. He has recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of jazz, blues and R&B giants. There’s so much more to discover in these pages, on www.markhamjazzfestival.com and in the venues of Unionville during the Festival. It is thrilling to be able to host such an outstanding event in our community – for residents and visitors alike to be able to enjoy diverse and eclectic jazz performances from Canadian as well as international musicians. Some will say that Jazz was born in 1895, when Buddy Bolden started his first band. Others will say 1917, when Nick LaRocca and his Original Dixieland Jazz Band recorded the first Jazz record, “Livery Stable Blues”. Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton said, “It is evidently known, beyond contradiction, that New Orleans is the cradle of jazz”. We are fortunate in Markham to host a Jazz Festival. Arts and culture are the foundation of liveable communities and play a vital role in the quality of life we enjoy – and this Jazz Festival is a significant contributor. From traditional or contemporary jazz, from swing, Latin, fusion, world, Dixieland, it is all here in Markham to enjoy in over 15 different venues and settings. As Mayor, I am pleased to extend the warm greetings from the City of Markham, and extend best wishes to all the festival organizers, musicians and music lovers. • Matthew Capel Thesis 18 September 2007
'Damned If They Do And Damned If They Don't': The Inferiority Complex, Nationalism, and Maclean's Music Coverage, 1967-1995 By Gordon Matthew Donald Capel A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2007 © Gordon Matthew Donald Capel 2007 Author's Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as required by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This thesis critically analyses music coverage in Maclean’s between 1967-1995, and reveals that the magazine continually stressed Canadian music as inferior to that produced by foreign artists. Only during times of intense nationalism were Canadian musicians positively received in its pages. More generally, domestic productions were seen as deficient. The historical components of this investigation reveal an essential irony in the perception of Canadian music during the last four decades of the 20th century. Despite nationalist rhetorics and Maclean's self-appointed title of "Canada's National Newsmagazine," its critics consistently emphasised that Canadian music was of poor quality in the 1967-1995 period. iii Acknowledgements I would like to express my gratitude to all those wonderful people who helped me complete this thesis. First, I must applaud my thesis advisor P. Whitney Lackenbauer for his motivation, discerning eye, and willingness to tell me when something wasn't history. For this confused, stubborn, and excitable grad student, your support cannot be overstated.
