Score: a Hockey Musical
Mongrel Media Presents Score: A Hockey Musical A Film by Michael McGowan (92min., Canada, 2010) Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith 1028 Queen Street West Star PR Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-488-4436 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html 1 OVERVIEW Music icon Olivia Newton-John (whose career has spanned over four decades, from Grease in 1978 to TV’s Glee in 2010) stars in Michael McGowan’s Score: A Hockey Musical, a film that combines musical numbers with Canada’s national sport. The film – which tells the story of a teenage hockey phenom who goes from obscurity to overnight fame – also stars a slew of Canadian talent. Among those are singer/songwriter Marc Jordan (whose composing credits include Rod Stewart’s “Rhythm of My Heart” and Cher’s “Taxi Taxi”), newcomers Noah Reid and Allie MacDonald, along with cameos by music artists Nelly Furtado, Dave Bidini, Hawksley Workman and John McDermott, journalists George Stroumboulopoulos and Evan Solomon, sports anchor Steve Kouleas, hockey dad Walter Gretzky and hockey star Theo Fleury. Unlike other musicals, the story doesn’t stop just for the sake of a song. Instead, the lyrics (written by McGowan) drive the plot. There are 20 original songs, among them one called “Darryl vs. the Kid” by Barenaked Ladies, as well as “Hugs” by Olivia Newton-John, Amy Sky and Marc Jordan, and five songs on which Hawksley Workman contributed. -

Seasonal Mythologies in the Lyrics of Cowboy Junkies
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, September 2018, Vol. 8, No. 9, 1406-1412 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2018.09.014 D DAVID PUBLISHING Seasonal Mythologies in the Lyrics of Cowboy Junkies Rick Wallach University of Miami (retired), Coral Gables, Florida, USA In many of his most memorable ballads, Cowboy Junkies lyricist and lead guitarist Michael Timmins combines imagery of seasonal change, of the year, notably of Winter, with religious and mythological references to create richly textured metaphors and analogies of love, loss and anguish. Some of the band’s songs which display these symbolic networks and thematic linkages which we Will consider here are “Winter’s Song,” “’Cause Cheap is How I Feel,” “Crescent Moon,” “First Recollection,” “Sad to See the Season Go,” “Good Friday” and “Ring on the Sill.” We will show that Timmins succeeds not only in rendering vivid tableaux of life in a world where Winter dominates the seasonal round, but also in making those exterior visions, in effect, objective correlatives of the inner lives of the characters of his ballads. Keywords: Canadian rock, progressive rock, ballads, lyrics, poetry, mythlogy, folklore, metaphor Introduction In “Equine Gothic” Jerry Leith Mills famously wrote that truly southern literature had to have a dead mule in it (Mills, 1996, pp. 2-17). As a counterpoint, some years ago, a journalist asked Cowboy Junkies vocalist Margo Timmins what characterized an authentic Canadian national music and she replied, “It would have to have winter in it.”1 Of course. Winter is the essential departure point for any conversation about Michael Timmins’ lyrics, or for that matter, about the artistry of the band he co-founded, Cowboy Junkies. -

CANADIAN PRIVATE COPYING COLLECTIVE SOCIÉTÉ CANADIENNE DE PERCEPTION DE LA COPIE PRIVÉE 150 Eglinton Ave. East, Suite 403 Toronto, Ontario M4P 1E8 416 486 6832 1 800 892 7235 416 486 3064 [FAX] www.cpcc.ca CPCC CPCC C-32 Submission Background The Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC) is the non-profit organization responsible for collecting private copying royalties and distributing them to songwriters, performers, music publishers and record companies, as well as promoting the interests of rights holders as they pertain to private copying. For over a decade, the CPCC has represented copyright holders before the Copyright Board of Canada. The Board establishes the levies that may be collected after trial-like hearings where experts, representing music rights holders and organizations that represent consumers and businesses that sell leviable blank media, present evidence and are cross-examined. The private copying levy has been an important part of the Canadian copyright regime since 1999, when the first private copying tariff was certified by the Copyright Board, following amendments made to the Copyright Act (the “Act”) in 1997 to allow for a levy to be placed on blank audio recording media. Currently, the levy only applies to blank CDs and MiniDiscs, at a rate of 29 cents per unit, and is paid by manufacturers and importers of these blank media to the CPCC for distribution to rights holders. The private copying levy has provided an effective mechanism whereby consumers are allowed to make copies of music for their personal use without infringing copyright and, in exchange, music creators receive royalties that recognize the value of private copies of their work. -

Books for Children Edith Fowke My best known children's book is Sallv Go Round the Sun: 300 Songs. Rhvmes. and Games of Canadian Children (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart; New York: Doubleday, 1969). This is a large-size volume beautifully illustrated by Carlos Marchiori. It won the Canadian Association of Children's Librarians ' Award for the best book of the year, and it continues popular. All the items were from oral tradition, collected in 1958-1964 from Canadian children plus a few from adult friends who remembered them from their youth. I started collecting with some of the children on my own street and then began going to various Toronto schools where I arranged to tape the students in Grade 3 classes, which I found the best age-group for this type of material. I asked them for the games and rhymes they knew, and had no trouble getting a wide variety. Children's lore is probably the easiest kind of folklore to collect today. When I had assembled a number of tapes, I transcribed them, picked the best versions of the various items, arranged them in categories, and cited the sources and references to other versions. I was lucky in the artist whose delightful color illustrations made the book very attractive. He used two unusual techniques: many of his pictures included fingerprints, others looked like lace. This book is still in print, still popular, and still representa- tive of the children's lore common in Canada. Students in my introductory folklore classes at York University collected children's rhymes and games as an annual assignment during the seventies and eighties, and found very few that were not in Sally. -
