Seasonal Mythologies in the Lyrics of Cowboy Junkies
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, September 2018, Vol. 8, No. 9, 1406-1412 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2018.09.014 D DAVID PUBLISHING Seasonal Mythologies in the Lyrics of Cowboy Junkies Rick Wallach University of Miami (retired), Coral Gables, Florida, USA In many of his most memorable ballads, Cowboy Junkies lyricist and lead guitarist Michael Timmins combines imagery of seasonal change, of the year, notably of Winter, with religious and mythological references to create richly textured metaphors and analogies of love, loss and anguish. Some of the band’s songs which display these symbolic networks and thematic linkages which we Will consider here are “Winter’s Song,” “’Cause Cheap is How I Feel,” “Crescent Moon,” “First Recollection,” “Sad to See the Season Go,” “Good Friday” and “Ring on the Sill.” We will show that Timmins succeeds not only in rendering vivid tableaux of life in a world where Winter dominates the seasonal round, but also in making those exterior visions, in effect, objective correlatives of the inner lives of the characters of his ballads. Keywords: Canadian rock, progressive rock, ballads, lyrics, poetry, mythlogy, folklore, metaphor Introduction In “Equine Gothic” Jerry Leith Mills famously wrote that truly southern literature had to have a dead mule in it (Mills, 1996, pp. 2-17). As a counterpoint, some years ago, a journalist asked Cowboy Junkies vocalist Margo Timmins what characterized an authentic Canadian national music and she replied, “It would have to have winter in it.”1 Of course. Winter is the essential departure point for any conversation about Michael Timmins’ lyrics, or for that matter, about the artistry of the band he co-founded, Cowboy Junkies. -

Named Entity Recognition for Search Queries in the Music Domain
DEGREE PROJECT IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, SECOND CYCLE, 30 CREDITS STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN 2016 Named Entity Recognition for Search Queries in the Music Domain SANDRA LILJEQVIST KTH ROYAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND COMMUNICATION Named Entity Recognition for Search Queries in the Music Domain SANDRA LILJEQVIST [email protected] Master’s Thesis in Computer Science School of Computer Science and Communication KTH Royal Institute of Technology Supervisor: Olov Engwall Examiner: Viggo Kann Principal: Spotify AB Stockholm - June 2016 Abstract This thesis addresses the problem of named entity recogni- tion (NER) in music-related search queries. NER is the task of identifying keywords in text and classifying them into predefined categories. Previous work in the field has mainly focused on longer documents of editorial texts. However, in recent years, the application of NER for queries has attracted increased attention. This task is, however, ac- knowledged to be challenging due to queries being short, ungrammatical and containing minimal linguistic context. The usage of NER for queries is especially useful for the implementation of natural language queries in domain- specific search applications. These applications are often backed by a database, where the query format otherwise is restricted to keyword search or the usage of a formal query language. In this thesis, two techniques for NER for music-related queries are evaluated; a conditional random field based so- lution and a probabilistic solution based on context words. As a baseline, the most elementary implementation of NER, commonly applied on editorial text, is used. Both of the evaluated approaches outperform the baseline and demon- strate an overall F1 score of 79.2% and 63.4% respectively. -
From Truth to Reconciliation : Transforming the Legacy of Residential Schools

We very easily could have been absorbed into the mainstream society. The pressures were there from all sides. No matter. We are here. Despite direct assimilation attempts. Despite the residential school systems. Despite the strong influences of the Church in Métis communities to ignore and deny our Aboriginal heritage and our Aboriginal spirituality. We are still able to say we are proud to be Métis. We are resilient as a weed. As beautiful as a wildflower. Soul of Zelda: A Memoir of an Ephemeral Being Mitchell Kopitch A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts University of Washington 2018 Committee: Ted Hiebert Sarah Dowling Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences ©Copyright 2018 Mitchell Kopitch University of Washington Abstract Soul of Zelda: A Memoir of an Ephemeral Being Mitchell Kopitch Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Ted Hiebert School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Hybrid document of memoir and fiction concerning fantasy, video games, and the ways in which game design nuance can be found in every day life. Particular attention is put on The Legend of Zelda from 1986, the first 3D Zelda installment, Ocarina of Time in 1998, and Dark Souls from 2011. This is a fictional story heavily inspired by those games and many others, but the story and characters are original, including a queer/gender bending protagonist. The story-line is a creative work that emulates the underlining philosophy of fantasy video games such as Zelda and Dark Souls, re-imagining video game design and personal gaming experiences as prose. 1 ~ Soul of Zelda ~ A Memoir of an Ephemeral Muse by Mitchell Kopitch Turn Page1 1 Book Equivalent of “Press Start”. 2 WORLD SELECTION: Poetics Statement Introduction: By the Author World I I-I: Intro Cinematic Interlude #1 - On Psychiatry I-II: Opening Interlude #2 - A Connection I-III: Character Creator Interlude #3 - Consumption World II II-I: Tutorial Interlude #4 - The Universe as Game II-II: Fast Travel Interlude #5 - On Labors of Love II-III: Mod Interlude #6 - Deprived World III III-I: Open World Interlude #7 - Extremity III-II: Dungeon Crawl Interlude #8 - The Male in the Room III-III: Boss Battle Interlude #9 - Of Demons and Memories Additional Content Attunement Exam 3 Poetics Statement When I parted ways with one of my roommates in college, he gave me his copy of Dark Souls (2011) as a parting gift. -

Matthew Capel Thesis 18 September 2007
'Damned If They Do And Damned If They Don't': The Inferiority Complex, Nationalism, and Maclean's Music Coverage, 1967-1995 By Gordon Matthew Donald Capel A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2007 © Gordon Matthew Donald Capel 2007 Author's Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as required by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This thesis critically analyses music coverage in Maclean’s between 1967-1995, and reveals that the magazine continually stressed Canadian music as inferior to that produced by foreign artists. Only during times of intense nationalism were Canadian musicians positively received in its pages. More generally, domestic productions were seen as deficient. The historical components of this investigation reveal an essential irony in the perception of Canadian music during the last four decades of the 20th century. Despite nationalist rhetorics and Maclean's self-appointed title of "Canada's National Newsmagazine," its critics consistently emphasised that Canadian music was of poor quality in the 1967-1995 period. iii Acknowledgements I would like to express my gratitude to all those wonderful people who helped me complete this thesis. First, I must applaud my thesis advisor P. Whitney Lackenbauer for his motivation, discerning eye, and willingness to tell me when something wasn't history. For this confused, stubborn, and excitable grad student, your support cannot be overstated.
