Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the emergence of Canadian popular music and the development of music genres that enjoyed the greatest popularity in Canada. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to an investigation of conditions connected to the relation of Canadian music and Canadian sense of identity and uniqueness. Further, an account of Canadian radio broadcasting and induction of regulating acts which influenced music production in Canada in the second half of the twentieth century are given. Moreover, the effectiveness and contributions of these regulating acts are summarized and evaluated. Last but not least, the main characteristics of the music style of a female singer songwriter Joni Mitchell are examined. -

Once the effects of the new wave were fully absorbed, it became apparent that the world of singer-songwriters would never be the same again. A conceptual mood had taken over the scene, and that mood's predecessors were precisely the Bob Dylans, the Neil Youngs, the Leonard Cohens, the Tim Buckleys, the Joni Mitchells, who had not been the most popular stars of the 1970s. Instead, they became the reference point for a new generation of "auteurs". Women, in particular, regained the status of philosophical beings (and not only disco-divas or cute front singers) that they had enjoyed with the works of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Suzy Gottlieb, better known as Phranc (1), was the (Los Angeles-based) songwriter who started the whole acoustic folk revival with her aptly-titled Folksinger (? 1984/? 1985 - nov 1985), whose protest themes and openly homosexual confessions earned her the nickname of "all-american jewish-lesbian folksinger". She embodied the historic meaning of that movement because she was a punkette (notably in Nervous Gender) before she became a folksinger, and because she continued to identify, more than anyone else, with her post- feminist and AIDS-stricken generation in elegies such as Take Off Your Swastika (1989) and Outta Here (1991). -

A LIFE IN C MAJOR By CHRIS SCHUTZ Copyright Dr C.J.Schutz schutz(a,usinet.co.za tel. 021782 4244 2014 Cover design: Reinet Blignaut Cover photo: A Class 19D sets off for a long run: Courtesy of David Bern. Printed by Zip Print - Fish Hoek. FOR PIERRE, REINFT AND CAROL AUTHOR'S NOTE I have been blessed by my children's interest in my past. It is in response to their questions that I have written this account. It is the story of how Christ became the major influence on my life, and what happened as a result, hence the title of this book. C 772cz/.or is also a musical term and my favourite key when playing the oboe - a key without shaxps or flats. It also mirrors my desire to live for the Lord without my own discordant ,Sharps' or ,flats' . My daughter Reinet had asked me to describe my early years, "leaving nothing out." I have therefore concentrated on my history bc/ore marriage -after that my children were there, so they knew what happened! Nevertheless, I have added a brief overview of experiences from marriage to the present, just to round things off. As I grew up in the Age of Steam, trains have always been a part of my life -hence the cover photo. ACKN0lvLHDGEMENTS Reinet put in much hard work in improving some of the text, and also the art work for the cover design, for which I am very grateful. I am indebted to my wife, Milly, for editing, for encouragement and for tolerance. -

Matthew Capel Thesis 18 September 2007
'Damned If They Do And Damned If They Don't': The Inferiority Complex, Nationalism, and Maclean's Music Coverage, 1967-1995 By Gordon Matthew Donald Capel A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2007 © Gordon Matthew Donald Capel 2007 Author's Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as required by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This thesis critically analyses music coverage in Maclean’s between 1967-1995, and reveals that the magazine continually stressed Canadian music as inferior to that produced by foreign artists. Only during times of intense nationalism were Canadian musicians positively received in its pages. More generally, domestic productions were seen as deficient. The historical components of this investigation reveal an essential irony in the perception of Canadian music during the last four decades of the 20th century. Despite nationalist rhetorics and Maclean's self-appointed title of "Canada's National Newsmagazine," its critics consistently emphasised that Canadian music was of poor quality in the 1967-1995 period. iii Acknowledgements I would like to express my gratitude to all those wonderful people who helped me complete this thesis. First, I must applaud my thesis advisor P. Whitney Lackenbauer for his motivation, discerning eye, and willingness to tell me when something wasn't history. For this confused, stubborn, and excitable grad student, your support cannot be overstated. -
