The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit, self-perpetuating society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare. Upon the authority of the charter granted to it by the Congress in 1863, the Academy has a mandate that requires it to advise the federal government on scientific and technical matters. Dr. Frank Press is president of the National Academy of Sciences. The National Academy of Engineering was established in 1964, under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences, as a parallel organization of outstanding engineers. It is autonomous in its administration and in the selection of its members, sharing with the National Academy ofSciences the responsibility for advising the federal government. The National Academy of Engineering also sponsors engineering programs aimed at meeting national needs; encourages education and research, and recognizes the superior achievements of engineers. Dr. Robert M. White is president of the National Academy of Engineering. The Institute ofMedicine was established in 1970 by the National Academy ofSciences to secure the services of eminent members ofappropriate professions in the examination of policy matters pertaining to the health of the public. The Institute acts under the responsibility given to the National Academy of Sciences by its congressional charter to be an adviser to the federal government and, upon its own initiative, to identify issues of medical care, research, and education. Dr. Stuart Bondurant is acting president of the Institute of Medicine. The National Research Council was organized by the National Academy of Sciences in 1916 to associate the broad community ofscience and technology with the Academy's purposes of furthering knowledge and advising the federal government. Functioning in accordance with general policies determined by the Academy, the Council has become the principal operating agency of both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in providing services to the government, the public, and the scientific and engineering communities. The Council is administered jointly by both Academies and the Institute ofMedicine. Dr. Frank Press and Dr. Robert M. White are chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the National Research Council. The Board on Science and Technology for International Development (BOSTID) of the Office of International Affairs addresses a range of issues arising from the ways in which science and technology in developing countries can stimulate and complement the complex processes of social and economic development. It oversees a broad program of bilateral workshops with scientific organizations in developing countries and conducts special studies. BOSTID's Advisory Committee on Technology Innovation publishes topical reviews of technical processes and biological resources of potential importance to developing countries. This report has been prepared by an ad hoc advisory panel of the Board on Science and Technology for International Development, Office ofInternational Affairs, National Research Council. A chance visit to Darwin allowed inspection of and addition to Northern Territory (NT) Museum’s earthworm collection. Native Diplotrema zicsii sp. nov. from Alligator River, Kakadu NP is described. Town samples were dominated by cosmopolitan exotic Metaphire bahli (Gates, 1945) herein keyed and compared morpho-molecularly with M. peguana (Rosa, 1890) requiring revision of allied species including Filipino Pheretima philippina (Rosa, 1891), P. p. lipa and P. p. victorias sub-spp. nov. A new P. philippina-group now replaces the dubia-group of Sims & Easton, 1972 and Amynthas carinensis (Rosa, 1890) further replaces their sieboldi-group. Lumbricid Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826) and Glossoscolecid Pontoscolex corethrurus (Müller, 1857) are confirmed introductions to the NT. mtDNA barcodes newly include Metaphire houlleti (Perrier, 1872) and Polypheretima elongata (Perrier, 1872) spp.-complexes from the Philippines. Pithemera philippinensis James & Hong, 2004 and Pi. glandis Hong & James, 2011 are new synonyms of Pi. bicincta (Perrier, 1875) that is common in Luzon. Vietnamese homonym Pheretima thaii Nguyen, 2011 (non P. thaii Hong & James, 2011) is replaced with Pheretima baii nom. nov. Two new Filipino taxa are also described: Pleionogaster adya sp. nov. from southern Luzon and Pl. miagao sp. nov. from western Visayas. Keywords.     KINABULU PARK MALAYSIA Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea, dominates this park in the state of Sabah on the northern tip of Borneo. The Park’s altitudinal and climatic gradient from tropical lowland and hill rainforest through tropical montane forest to sub-alpine forest and scrub combined with steep slopes, varied geology and frequent climatic oscillations provide ideal conditions for speciation. The Park has a diverse biota and high endemism and is a Centre of Plant Diversity containing species from the Himalayas, China, Australia and Malaysia as well as pan- tropical flora. Most of Borneo’s mammals, birds, amphibians and invertebrates many of which are threatened and vulnerable, occur in the Park. COUNTRY Malaysia NAME Kinabalu Park NATURAL WORLD HERITAGE SITE 2000: Inscribed on the World Heritage List under Natural Criteria ix and x. STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE [pending] The UNESCO World Heritage Committee issued the following statement at the time of inscription: Justification for Inscription Criteria (ix) and (x): The site has a diverse biota and high endemism. The altitudinal and climatic gradient from tropical forest to alpine conditions combine with precipitous topography, diverse geology and frequent climate oscillations to provide conditions ideal for the development of new species. The Park contains high biodiversity with representatives from more than half the families of all flowering plants. The majority of Borneo’s mammals, birds, amphibians and invertebrates (many threatened and vulnerable) occur in the Park. This paper is an account of all known records of birds from Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. It also includes reviews of the history of the Island’s ornithology, its avian biogeography, the taxonomy of selected endemic taxa, population estimates of resident species, and current and past threats to its birds. One hundred and forty-nine species of birds have been recorded from the Island, of which 14 are breeding landbirds, nine are breeding seabirds, 18 are visitors and 108 are vagrant species. The Island has a high degree of endemism and this is expressed in the avifauna through 11 endemic taxa among the 23 breeding species. Biogeographically, Christmas Island is an oceanic island, with breeding and visiting species originating from several sources including South-East Asia, Australia, the Palaearctic, pelagic, and other undetermined sources. Links to the Greater Sunda Islands and Wallacea are very minor. The Island was first occupied by humans in 1888. Since then, three bird species have been introduced (two deliberately) and four have self-colonised. No bird taxa have become extinct locally, despite several extinctions of other endemic and indigenous fauna. However, numerous threatening processes are placing increasing pressure on native birds.

Six new species of the genus Pheretima are described from forested lands near the village of Balbalasang in Barangay Balbalan, Kalinga Province, Luzon I., the Philippines: Pheretima kalingaensis sp. nov., Pheretima aguinaldoi sp. nov., Pheretima balbalanensis sp. nov., Pheretima banaoi sp. nov., Pheretima pugnatoris sp. nov., and Pheretima tabukensis sp. nov. Pheretima kalingaensis sp. nov. and P. aguinaldoi sp. nov. have spermathecal pores in 6/7, which are 0.09-0.16 and 0.21 circumferences apart, respectively. Pheretima balbalanensis sp. nov. and P. banaoi sp. nov. belong to the dubia-group of Sims and Easton (1972) with 3 pairs of spermathecal pores in 6/7-8/9. In P. balbalanensis sp. nov., the penis is a transverse ridge with an apical pore, but in P. banaoi sp. nov. the penis is a small elliptical bump. Pheretima pugnatoris sp. nov. and P. tabukensis sp. nov. belong to the darnleiensis-group of Sims and Easton (1972) with 4 pairs of spermathecal pores in 5/6-8/9. Pheretima pugnatoris sp. nov. has pale pigmentation, lacks septa 8/9/10, and has a typhlosole.

Following a flood of unscientific taxon namings, in 2013 a group of concerned herpetologists organized a widely supported, community-based campaign to treat these nomina as lying outside the permanent scientific record, and to ignore and overwrite them as appropriate.

A chance visit to Darwin allowed inspection of and addition to Northern Territory (NT) Museum’s earthworm collection. Native Diplotrema zicsii sp. nov. from Alligator River, Kakadu NP is described. Town samples were dominated by cosmopolitan exotic Metaphire bahli (Gates, 1945) herein keyed and compared morpho-molecularly with M. peguana (Rosa, 1890) requiring revision of allied species including Filipino Pheretima philippina (Rosa, 1891), P. p. lipa and P. p. victorias sub-spp. nov. A new P. philippina-group now replaces the dubia-group of Sims & Easton, 1972 and Amynthas carinensis (Rosa, 1890) further replaces their sieboldi-group. Lumbricid Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826) and Glossoscolecid Pontoscolex corethrurus (Müller, 1857) are confirmed introductions to the NT. mtDNA barcodes newly include Metaphire houlleti (Perrier, 1872) and Polypheretima elongata (Perrier, 1872) spp.-complexes from the Philippines. Pithemera philippinensis James & Hong, 2004 and Pi. glandis Hong & James, 2011 are new synonyms of Pi. bicincta (Perrier, 1875) that is common in Luzon. Vietnamese homonym Pheretima thaii Nguyen, 2011 (non P. thaii Hong & James, 2011) is replaced with Pheretima baii nom. nov. Two new Filipino taxa are also described: Pleionogaster adya sp. nov. from southern Luzon and Pl. miagao sp. nov. from western Visayas. Keywords.
