English Country Dancing is believed to be the oldest form of folk dance still being danced in the world today. Its origins can be traced back at least as far as 1480, or many years before Columbus sailed for America! Many names of English Country Dances appear in sixteenth and early seventeenth century literature including Shakespeare. Saturday 19 October sees the Autumn Dance of the Heathfield Folk Dance Club being held in the Village hall at in the heart of the beautiful countryside. Music for this annual event will be provided once again by the folk band Whirling Skirmish. Whirling Skirmish was formed by two brothers who came from a musical family of six. Richard and Alan, both multi-instrumentalists, got their first ‘break’ nearly thirty years ago when invited to play, at the age of twelve, with a band formed by their local doctor. This band, The Kentish Vagabonds, which still exists and play locally, became the launching pad for the young brothers. In time the brothers met a caller from Folkestone, Kevin Edwards, with whom they formed a new group ‘The Barnstormers’ and played together for many years. In the last few years Richard and Alan have moved back to their ‘roots’ in Folkestone and in time decided to form their current band Whirling Skirmish. The dance will be led by very experienced caller Carol Hewson. Carol started her dance ‘career’ at school, originally as part of the curriculum. Re-discovering the joy of Country Dance at a Broadstairs Folk Week she has not stopped dancing since!

Heathfield 2013

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 26 AUGUST 2013 MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THIS DATE IN YOUR DIARY

Le Marche 2013 is approaching fast - it is the 17th consecutive year - the longest running Anglo/French Market in the South East and it all happens in Heathfield. Every time we just try to improve on the previous year's event - it is certainly appears to be a winning formula with something for everyone - young and old alike. Thousands of visitors will flock into Heathfield for the day from far and wide for this very popular event and IT IS ALL FREE!! FREE entertainment, FREE Park and Ride and FREE programme of events

The whole idea is to promote the town of Heathfield by inviting visitors to come along and enjoy the day and see what Heathfield has to offer and, thankfully, many are very pleasantly surprised and revisit our town. As usual, Station Approach and part of Station Road will be closed to traffic for the entire day to allow the extrav- aganza to take place. As in previous years, there will be music and entertainment to suit all ages, together with approximately 80 market stalls (approximately 50% French) selling English and French goodies and more and more Heathfield shops are opening on the day - and some even reported record takings last year!!

This year we are trying to invite and showcase even more local musical talent than ever before. You can see from the very full Programme of Events there is something going on all day at FOUR SEPARATE VENUES around the town.

Heathfield Fire Service, as part of their 90th birthday celebrations, are holding their Open Day at the Fire Station. This is always great fun and attracts many visitors. We enjoyed perfect weather at last year's Le Marche and we certainly hope we will again.

Please check out our website www.heathfieldlemarche.co.uk - it has just been updated on information for Le Marche 2013. Or contact Richard Ridley on 07970 237723 or email [email protected]

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: Christmas family fun day taking place in Heathfield on Saturday 23 November, 10.00am - 5.00pm. Organised by the Heathfield Chamber of Commerce. Horam Pre-School There is a lot going on at the pre-school at the moment. Earlier this year the children took part in Marie Curie’s 'Mini Pots of Care' campaign, decorating pots and planting daffodil bulbs in them, taking them home to care for them and bringing them back when they flowered. We raised over £50 for Marie Curie and the children were thrilled to see how their plants grew and flowered! It is an exciting time for our rising 5s as we have 13 children who will be 'graduating' to primary school in September. The reception teachers will be visiting the pre-school in the coming weeks to meet the children and the children will also be visiting the schools. We recently had a pre-school outing to Wilderness Wood to go on a bug hunt. There was a good turnout of children and parents and, after being split into two groups, the children went off exploring and found bee- tles, bugs, snails, ladybirds, slugs and more. Everyone enjoyed it and the children then had fun letting off some steam in the play area! If you have any questions about the pre-school please call on 01435 812192. If you are looking for a pre- school place for your child you can come along and visit the pre-school any time just by calling the above number. You can also read about us on our website: www.horampreschool.org.uk

St Richards Pre-school

The pre-school is looking forward to a busy summer term. We have many exciting things planned including our annual trip, which this year is to Blackberry Farm, a visit from the RNLI, sports day and a summer fair was held on Saturday 22 June. We will hold our leavers celebration to bid farewell to those children leaving to start pri- mary school. We do our utmost to equip the children for this next stage in their lives and have been praised by the local teachers for our preparation. To celebrate Easter we held an Easter Fair and the children collected pennies, which they used to create the shape of an Easter egg. The money raised from these events was price matched by Santander. This has enabled us to purchase plants and gardening equipment for the pre-school garden. The children have been busy planting seeds and vegetables, so they are very keen to watch their progress. Hopefully we will have a bumper crop. The pre-school were very grateful to receive a charitable donation enabling as to purchase an iPad and software. This is a fantastic piece of equipment for the children to use to learn and develop, espe- cially those with special needs. We would like to welcome our new chairperson Vanessa Burr to the pre-school committee. Vanessa has vast experience in the charity sector and her knowledge will be an asset to the pre-school. Places are available for September for children aged 2-5 years. Call Lisa on 077510 72765 or visit www.strichardspreschool.org.uk for more information.

Broad Oak Pre-school

The children continue to experience new and exciting activities at pre-school and with the finer weather have been playing outside as much as possible. They have been gardening and experimenting with water, sand, soil and gloop! Messy play is the order of the day and something that all the children enjoy. In July we will say goodbye to 23 children as they go off to 5 of the local primary schools. We wish them every happiness at school. Before they go though we will be holding our sports day, summer outing to the seaside and will be holding our end of year concert with a seaside theme. We will be welcoming new children in September, which is always an exciting time, and we will be planning lots of exciting things for them to do. We do still have places available for September, so do give us a call if you are looking for a place. Fund raising is as always on our minds and we have held an Easter Fair and 5k walk to raise funds. The chil- dren have also taken part in a sponsored bike ride which they all enjoyed. The Baby Bops Toddler Group runs from 9.45am – 11.45am every Friday in the Scout Hut next to the Village Hall and you are very welcome to come. If you would like any further information, then please give us a call on 01435 864326.

The sun shone and the crowds arrived and enjoyed a wonderful community event and gave their support for Demelza Hospice. The Lions bus transported visitors all day and was very popular as was the procession - it was great to see so many young people from Heathfield and Community Colleges giving their time and expertise read- ily to help others. The Solstice dancers and The Tunbridge Wells Ukelele Band were enjoyed by all. Our thanks to all our stallholders, exhibitors and volunteers who worked so hard all day. Unfortunately two Scarecrows went missing which put a shadow over the volunteers and the competition. The aim of the Scarecrows is to bring awareness of Demelza Hospice and the excellent work they do. The Dog show proved very popular and I would like to have taken them all home. The Gypsy Caravans were a great photo opportunity and the Barn Dance at the end of a long day was well supported and was the “icing on the cake”. WILL WE DO IT ALL NEXT YEAR ,YES but we do need more help so if you feel like giving a much needed hand, we are a friendly group but desperately need your help on the day before the Fair, setting it up on the day itself and help on the following day to clear up. Taking things for granted is such a human trait. No sooner are we grateful for a bit of sun after the long dreary days than we are complaining "but it's still so cold". The ability to read is just another of those things we take for granted. Keeping up-to-date with what's going on in the world; devouring the latest on whatever your passion might be - trains, gardening, investments, wine, or whatever. But for so many people the pleasure of curling up and burying oneself in a favourite mag- azine or newspaper is a something mourned. Their eyesight simply isn't up to it. Here at TNAUK we are determined to bring that pleasure back to people who have trouble with their sight. Whatever your interest, we have something for you, in whatever format takes your fancy. Audio on CD that you can pop in your player, MP3 audio to download, on-screen text to magnify, or text to use with a screen voice reader. The choice is yours - over 200 titles! Latest text additions are our children's magazines: Aquila, First News, Horrible Histories and Top of the Pops. And for traction engine lovers we have a real treat - the editor of Old Glory magazine, Colin Tyson, came in himself to read some of the May edition for us. As one of our regular customers said “It is such a thrill to get my Guardian newspaper in the morning. I can 'read' it in bed before my wife's has even arrived!". You can read more about who we are and what we do on our website (www.tnauk.org.uk), and see photos of us on our Facebook page. Several other organisations produce audio books but we are the only one pro- viding the delights of magazines such as Reader's Digest, Yours, Good Food, The Oldie and Which? mag- azine. Call our friendly Customer Service team on 01435 866102 and ask for a free sample CD to try out on your player. Audio prices start at £11.00 per year for a monthly audio magazine, or £21 a year for a weekly. Text for 'reading' on a screen is £39.00 for the year - which includes all the newspapers and magazines.

Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice was officially opened in November 2003 and over the past 10 years has helped hundreds of life-limited children and their families all over Sussex. There are up to 1,000 families with life-limited children in East and West Sussex. Chestnut Tree House offers specialist palliative care both at the hospice and out in the community in the family’s own home. But it is not just care for the child or young person, Chestnut Tree House also provides support for the whole family includ- ing siblings and grandparents, psychological support and care in bereavement therapy. We are now celebrating our first decade and would like our local community to join us in celebrating 10 years of care at the hospice. There are lots of ways in which you, your family, friends and colleagues could get involved. Whether you choose Chestnut Tree House as your Charity of the Year for 2013, take part in one of our 10th anniversary events, donate, volunteer, visit our shops or join our Lottery, we would love you to be part of the celebrations. You could even hold your own 10th birthday party and help raise funds to enable us to con- tinue to provide our specialist care to local children. Alternatively, why not come along and see for yourself what a wonderful place Chestnut Tree House is? On Friday 4 and Saturday 5 October 2013 we will be throwing open our doors between 10.00am and 4.00pm and everybody is welcome. There will be tours of the house, taking in the youngsters’ favourites like the hydrother- apy pool and multi-sensory room, plus a chance to meet the nurses and care workers who do such a wonderful job looking after the children and families. The units we have in Heathfield & Horam have all seen new members joining consistently, some moving up from the previous sections when they are old enough. We have 2 Rainbow units, 1 in Heathfield which is completely full now and with a waiting list and 1 in Horam which currently has a few vacancies. We have 3 Brownie units in Heathfield, all meeting in various halls and 1 Brownie unit in Horam. We also have 2 Guide units, 1 in Heathfield and the other in Horam and finally 1 senior section unit which meets mainly in Horam but is more flexible due to the age of the girls and their current situations, eg work and school exams. All units are very busy with their summer programme hoping to be able to get out and about a little with the lighter evenings and, we hope, some dry weather and sun! Due to our large numbers of girls in each section we desperately need more adult helpers and would be really pleased to hear from anyone who would be able to volunteer for just a few hours a week or month. There is a great website with details nationally - www.girlguiding.org and we also have a more local site with news - www.girlguidingsussexeast.org.uk.
