Dear Reader

Welcome to the summer edition of Heathfield First. This is the second edition in the exciting new format. Significant changes were made to the format for the spring edition of this publication. The size has been re- duced to A5, the main colours used now reflect the colours of the Cham- ber’s logo, a rich blue, and adverts are now in colour rather than the previous black and white. A standardised format has also been introduced which means that reports from organisations will always appear on the same page – for ease of use. Thank you to everyone who has provided such positive feedback so far. We would welcome any further feedback, therefore, please do forward any comments you may have by email to: [email protected]. For information about our events please see p5 or go to our website www.heathfieldchamber.co.uk. For information about Wealden Expo and to book a stand visit Heathfield www.wealdenexpo.co.uk. We are a very successful group of amateur painters. Some of us have been painting for many years and are very experienced, while others have taken up this pastime since retiring. We all enjoy this pleasure together and share our knowledge and experience with each other. We have an exhibition of our paintings at the Community Shop and Post Office at Hurst Green. If you would like to drop in to see what we do you will also be able to get a cup of coffee and you will be made very welcome. We are very happy that Broad Oak Pre-school have been able to utilise the area at the back of the hall for their new Forest School venture, offering a great opportunity to the young children of the wider community. We are proving to be a very popular venue – everything from children’s parties to wedding re- ceptions, and several groups use the hall every year for their events. Our bookings have in- creased from last year, and we are very pleased to hear that we are being recommended as a great venue by many who use the hall. The hall is very spacious and light. We have disabled access and toilets and ample car parking. We also have the benefit of the play park adjacent to the hall. The hall is available to hire for private functions and parties. Heathfield 2014

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 25 AUGUST 2014

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THIS DATE IN YOUR DIARY

Le Marche 2014 is approaching fast - it is the 18th consecutive year - the longest running Anglo/French Market in the South East and it all happens in Heathfield. Every time we just try to improve on the previous year's event - it is certainly appears to be a winning formula with some- thing for everyone - young and old alike. Thousands of visitors will flock into Heathfield for the day from far and wide for this very popular event and

IT IS ALL FREE!! FREE entertainment, FREE Park and Ride and FREE programme of events

The whole idea is to promote the town of Heathfield by inviting visitors to come along and enjoy the day and see what Heathfield has to offer and, thankfully, many are very pleasantly surprised and revisit our town. As usual, Station Approach and part of Station Road will be closed to traf- fic for the entire day to allow the extravaganza to take place. As in previous years, there will be music and entertainment to suit all ages, together with approximately 80 market stalls (approx- imately 50% French) selling English and French goodies and more and more Heathfield shops are opening on the day and some even reported record takings last year!! This year we are trying to invite and showcase even more local musical talent than ever before. You can see from the very full Programme of Events there is something going on all day at four separate venues around the town. Heathfield Fire Service are holding their Open Day at the Fire Station. This is always great fun and attracts many visitors. We enjoyed perfect weather at last year's Le Marche and we certainly hope we will again. As a special treat this year Wealden Crafts are arranging 20 of their members to attend. Please check out our website, www.heathfieldlemarche.co.uk, for up-to-date information on Le Marche 2014 or contact Richard Ridley on 07970 237723 or email Richard@ridleyassoci- ates.co.uk.

14 www.heathfieldchamber.co.uk www.heathfield.net Heathfield Street Pastors May 2014 was a special month for Heathfield Street Pastors (SPs): • Celebrated their 6th Birthday! Yes, Street Pastors have been out on the streets of Heathfield since May 2008. During that time we have been able to serve the community in a variety of ways, helping and chatting with many people, young and old. • Two Heathfield SPs attended the national Street Pastors Practitioners Conference in Manchester. The aim of the Conference was to encourage each Street Pastor team to build stronger working partnerships with others to help improve life in their local communities. The Friday evening of the Conference was a groundbreaking Big Night Out when 150 Street Pastors from all over the UK went into Manchester city centre for a twilight patrol! “Representatives from Diageo, the multi-national alcohol retailer, and The Luminar Group, the UK’s largest chain of nightclubs, brought to the Conference a willingness to engage in our shared social responsibility and opened up informed debate between their industries and Street Pastors. We are grateful to them for being part of the event.’ Ascension Trust - Street Pastors. All this shows that Street Pastors are being an active force for good at a national and interna- tional level as well as here in our local community of Heathfield. We would like to thank the local community for their continued support.

The Joint Heathfield District Commissioners Division have arranged a day at Knockhatch Selwyns Wood At last the rain stopped and from March we have had a dry period with lovely spring and early summer sunshine. Selwyns Wood, The Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Nature Reserve in Cross-in- Hand, responded with a lovely display of Wood Anemones and Bluebells and now Foxgloves are flowering in areas where the scrub was cleared in previous years. It is always amazing how quickly plants that have been dormant for years in overgrown or shady areas respond to the stimulus of light. One of the most interesting areas of the reserve developed after the great storm of 1987 when most of the large trees were blown down and were not replaced with new plantings. In this area heather grew to create a distinct heathland area which, in late summer/autumn, provides a won- derful purple landscape as the heather flowers. However, left to itself nature would soon re-pop- ulate this area with, initially, bracken and then birch trees as the habitat is surrounded by birch and their seeds easily germinate to produce saplings. Therefore, to maintain this distinct area ac- tive intervention is required in early summer. The Sussex Wildlife Trust volunteers, who look after the reserve, begin one of their least favourite tasks; the removal by hand of bracken, birch saplings and also bramble. The reward is the maintenance of a pocket of heathland which pro- vides a home to Lizards, Slow Worms and Grass snakes as well as an aerial hunting ground for Dragonflies. Later in the year work will take place to cut back old heather so that new growth can develop to maintain a diverse heather population.

Trevor Hince, Volunteer Reserve Manager (To find the reserve take Firgrove Road by Cross-in-Hand Methodist Church for a little more than half a mile and the reserve is signposted on the left. Drive slowly - you might miss it!)

Heathfield Show, 24 May - Good Weather for Ducks! Nicola Magill, Show Secretary, commented “The day ran smoothly with everything carrying on regardless of the rain. All our visitors were in good humour and enjoyed the day. It was unfor- tunate that we had heavy showers overnight, but luckily the ground had been dry for the week prior to Show day which meant the land held up well to the many feet trampling the ground and vehicles driving in the car parks. This year’s pre-show preparation of matting and roadway paid dividends when the rain fell. Additionally, we had on hand a fleet of tractors to help pull out stuck vehicles. The ground team worked tirelessly on Saturday afternoon ensuring everybody left the Show ground safely.” Full results of the competitions are available on the Show website: www.heathfieldshow.org. St Richards Pre-School provides a fun, safe learning environment for children aged from 2 to 5 and follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework providing the children with a whole range of play and educational experiences. In the summer term we hosted a visit from the Heathfield Police Community Support Officers and the RNLI who talked to the children about keeping safe, especially with the warmer weather en- couraging us all to play outside and visit the seaside. We will be saying goodbye and sending best wishes to the ‘Rising 5s’ as they leave us to join their primary schools in September, taking with them a group school photo which will be a lovely memento to keep. Thank you for everyone who supported the Spring Fayre, we raised over £500.00 towards the purchase of new outdoor games/toys, gardening equipment, seeds and plants. The children have really enjoyed getting outside, sowing seeds and watching the plants burst into a rainbow of colour. Dare I say it, but the next big fundraising events will be in the autumn term and focusing on Christmas!! For more information and place availability in September please call Lisa Johnston, 07751 072765, or go to our website www.strichardspreschool.org.uk
