This might be by way of trading via a Community Interest Company. It is clear that in the longer term parish and town councils will have difficulty funding all the activities they are involved in by means of the Precept (Council Tax) alone and some imaginative solutions need to be sought. It is very early days but the Council will continue to let parishioners know what is happening and will carry out public consultation before any major decisions are taken. We held our first Open Morning at the Parish Council office on Saturday 1 February when Coun- cillors were available to meet with local residents to discuss matters of concern. It was very poorly attended and the plan now is for Councillors to hold “surgeries” at local venues across the parish. The dates and times will be advertised and it is hoped that any local residents who wish to raise any questions or discuss matters of concern will attend. If you have any comments or suggestions, please contact the Clerk. At the time of writing, the continuous wet weather has prevented the commencement of work to provide new burial grounds at Theobalds Green. However, we hope that work will start soon and there will be a new woodland burial area as well as a general burial ground, to replace St Bartholomew’s, which is becoming full. At its last meeting the Finance and General Purposes Committee awarded the following grants: £250 to Heffle Cuckoo Fair towards setting up costs for the 2014 event and £350 to the Broad Oak Village Hall Committee towards the cost of a new oven. If you are involved in a group or organisation which is active within the parish and need a small grant towards a particular proj- ect please contact the office for an application form. The Parish Council are in the process of having a new website designed which we hope will be much easier to use and navigate around. As well as details of all meetings, agendas and min- utes, it will include details of, and links to, local groups and organisations, bus timetables, ven- ues for hire and calendar of events. It will also give information about Parish Councillors and their contact details. The address is www.hwpc.org.uk. The Annual Parish Assembly takes place on Tuesday 8 April and is an opportunity for electors in the parish to ask questions of their Parish Councillors and raise matters of concern. As pre- viously, local groups and organisations will be displaying information about their activities and you are invited to come and see what is going on in the community. It is held in the Hall, Heathfield Community Centre, Sheepsetting Lane and starts at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be served. 8 www.heathfieldchamber.co.uk www.heathfield.net Community News Burwash Painters Burwash Monday Painters are well into their winter programme now which continues until the end of April. We had a very successful year in 2013 having spent the summer months painting out of doors, producing some varied and exciting work which was shown at our annual exhibition in the Burwash Village Hall last November. We had a very enjoyable day visited by many local friends who came in for a cup of tea and a chat and to see what we had been doing during the year. All paintings were for sale. At Christmas we sponsored a Christmas tree for the festival at St Bartholomews Church, Bur- wash. The church was full of Christmas trees decorated by local groups, clubs and by the local school children. The festival was a lovely event and a great pleasure to be involved in. The Church was a wonderful sight with all the trees lit up. Back in the summer we had a stall at the Burwash summer fair and also exhibited at the Heffle Cuckoo fair in April. We also had a stall at the Crafty No3 Christmas fair at the Community Cen- tre, Sheepsetting Lane, in December. Our next opportunity to show you our latest work will be at the Heffle Cuckoo fair on the 26 April, Cade Street. This is a lovely event supported by many local people producing some very indi- vidual arts and crafts and lots of things for you to enjoy and well worth a visit. Dame Heffle re- leases the first cuckoo of spring and the fun begins. All money raised on this day goes to Demelza Hospice Care for Children. If you are interested in joining a group like ours you will be made very welcome. Our website is: www.burwash-monday-painters.com or you may prefer to phone Grace on 01435 860848 or Anne on 01435 883247.

The President of the Heathfield and District Agricultural Society, Elizabeth Buchanan CVO LLD ARAgS, has re- tired. During her three years as the Show’s President Elizabeth Buchanan promoted the Show far and wide and was able to introduce new sponsors. As a life long supporter of the Show not only did she continue ex- hibiting her Sussex cattle whilst President but was seen on Show day all around the Show ground presenting cups and talking to other exhibitors. On her retirement Elizabeth was presented with a life membership to the Show Society. The new President, unanimously appointed at the Society’s AGM, will be Lord De La Warr. Lord De La Warr is also a regular exhibitor at the Heathfield Show and lives locally at Buckhurst Park. His mixed organic farm runs a heard of Sussex cattle, which exhibit at our Show, large black pigs and Jacob sheep. The beef and pork is sold locally to pubs and restaurants. Lord De La Warr is a staunch supporter of buying locally produced products and is looking forward to champi- oning the Heathfield Show to its local audience. The schedule of classes for the Heathfield Show livestock and horse exhibitors is available from our website this year and entries can be made on line at www.heathfieldshow.org. There is no excuse to go hungry while you shop because there will be an ongoing BBQ selling tempting burgers and hotdogs. The Stores will be open for teas and coffees and scrumptious cakes while The Star will be offering its usual delicious menu ranging from imaginative sand- wiches to a full three course gastro-pub meal. Not forgetting a refreshing glass of chilled wine, pint of Harveys or even a nice fruity summer Pimms. To complete the atmosphere musicians will be playing through- out the day and there will be face painting for the children. Park- ing will be organised within the village. A few spaces are left for any local crafts people who might be in- terested in being included in the fair. Please contact Deborah on 01435 812938 for more information.

In January this year 9 of our Cubs received their Silver Chief Scout Awards (see photo). They have worked extremely hard to achieve this over the past couple of years successfully overcoming many challenges on the way. You may have seen us working hard in Sainsbury’s in Heathfield once a month bag-packing to raise funds for our proposed new HQ building in Ghyll Road. Our thanks to Sainsbury’s who have taken on the group as their ‘Charity of the Year’ and are supporting us with our fundraising activities. We have also held two successful race night fundraising events and would like to thank everyone for their support. The Scouts will soon be doing a sponsored hike to help raise funds so if you would like to sponsor them please contact us. If you know anyone who may be interested in helping us achieve our aim, please get in touch. We are moving forward with our new HQ albeit slowly at the moment. But once the weather has improved we will be starting some of the work by improving the entrance to the land and with the improved plan going in for building regulations very soon, we should then be in a better position to look for grants to help us achieve our aim. Although we very much appreciate All Saints and St Richards Primary School for allowing us to use their facilities to meet each week, we look for- ward to achieving our aim to have our own HQ building and site to cater for our growing num- bers. With growing numbers comes the need for more help/assistance from adults. If you feel you could give a little time to help, please contact us and let us know. www.heathfield.net www.heathfieldchamber.co.uk 17 Community News Cross-in-Hand WI CROSS-IN-HAND WI IS 85 THIS YEAR !! The WI started in this country during the First World War in 1915. It was to encourage home grown produce and the preservation of fruit to help with the war effort. Jerusalem was first sung at an annual general meeting in 1924. This tradition still continues today at the start of every meeting in Cross-in-Hand. That’s not to say we are all about Jam and Jerusalem, there are many other reasons to become a member of our organization. We are a caring community group who take an interest in local and government decisions ranging from health, to childcare and conservation. This year we celebrate our 85th anniversary with a garden party at the home of one of our longest serving members. Her delightful garden will be the venue for members and their specially invited guests to enjoy this special occasion. To find out more about your local branch of the WI, please telephone Joy on 01435 812819. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Cross-in-Hand Village Hall.

18 www.heathfieldchamber.co.uk www.heathfield.net Community News Selwyns Wood This time last year I wrote that Selwyns Wood Nature Reserve was the wettest that I had seen it; well, this year it is wetter still! The heavy rains in December and January have meant that the ghyls and streams are full and in places overflowing. Coupled with this rain have been strong winds and Selwyns Wood has not escaped their force undamaged. Several large trees have been blown down, one narrowly missing the power-lines that cross one corner of the reserve. The paths and rides have been littered with branches and fallen smaller trees. The Sussex Wildlife Trust Volunteers, who look after the reserve, have worked to clear the debris and make the paths safe. Provided they are not a danger to the public, fallen trees/timber are not a bad thing for a woodland. They provide fresh habitats and can be beneficial to many species as they go through the long process of decay. When the volunteers have been able to work in the wood we have been clearing and widening the path that links the main ride with the area of heather. Previously this had been very over- hung by trees and rather a dark ‘passageway’. Clearing and thinning the trees will allow more light in and provide far greater connectivity between these two areas allowing species to move more freely between these two habitats – heather heathland and the banks of the ghyl stream. We have also provided two rustic benches, looking towards the banks of the ghyl where several species of butterfly may be seen; that is if we ever see the sun again! Trevor Hince, Volunteer Reserve Manager (To find the reserve take Firgrove Road by Cross-in-Hand Methodist Church for a little more than half a mile and the reserve is signposted on the left. Heathfield and surrounding communities will soon have access to faster broadband as a result of a countywide programme to improve internet infrastructure to enable access to better services. The eSussex project, led by East Sussex County Council, aims to get the county up to speed with faster broadband and will see in excess of 66,500 homes and businesses able to upgrade over the next 2 years. The main exchange at Heathfield (together with Burwash, Etchingham, , Horam, Mayfield, Robertsbridge, and ) were identified by the engineers as the first areas to be upgraded to fibre broadband as part of this project. Construction work to build the new network is now well under way and residents and businesses in these areas will start to be able to benefit by this summer latest. Once the upgrade is completed in your area, you will be able to order faster broadband services. Keep an eye open for news about when faster speeds will be “live” and then talk to your internet provider. Get ready and visit the dedicated website www.goesussex.co.uk to find out more!

20 www.heathfieldchamber.co.uk www.heathfield.net Broad Oak Pre-School Broad Oak Pre-school is a supportive and welcoming place. We nurture each child as an indi- vidual and provide every opportunity for them to further their development through play. Preparations for our new Forest School are well underway with the initial clearing of the area we will be using which is behind the Village Hall. A working party of parents, children and staff en- joyed clearing, sweeping, raking leaves, litter picking and having a huge bonfire! Work contin- ues and we hope to be able to use the area very soon – the children are certainly keen to get outside and we will be out there whatever the weather. We will be holding our annual Easter fair on Saturday 5 April, 11.00am – 2.00pm. We will have several stalls selling various products as well as refreshments, children’s activities and games and an Easter egg hunt. The Baby BOPS Baby and Toddler Group continues to run from 9.45am – 11.45am every Fri- day in the Scout Hut next to the Village Hall and you are very welcome to come. If you would like any further information, then please give us a call on 01435 864326 or visit our website www.bops.co.uk . We do have spaces available and are also booking places for Sep- tember.

St Richards Pre-School St Richards Pre-School provides a fun, safe learning environment for children aged from 2 to 4 and follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework providing the children with a whole range of play and educational experiences. For the coming spring and summer terms we will host visits from the Heathfield Fire Station of- ficers and fire engine, Police Community Support Officers and the RNLI who will talk to the chil- dren about keeping safe whether at home or outside. We celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day with special themed coffee mornings held for the parents and not forgetting our annual sports days where everyone is a winner. We continue to work with Heffle Court and the children really enjoy completing craft activities with the residents and visiting Willow Farm. The summer term means preparing the ‘Rising 5s’ for primary school with visits to their schools and the reception teachers visiting us at St Richards. The emotional end of year group photo is taken, along with a few tears, as a nice memento for the parents to keep. Fundraising this term will focus on raising money for the pre-school garden to purchase new outdoor games/toys, gardening equipment, flower and vegetable seeds and plants. The children really enjoy getting outside, sowing seeds and watching the plants burst into a rainbow of colour and this cannot be achieved without the support of the parents, families and the local commu- nity donating their time and money to the pre-school. Spring is a great time for the children and this year our spring fayre is being held on Saturday 10 May from 2.00pm - 4.00pm in the St Richards Church Hall. There will be a spring bonnet com- petition, themed games, the ever popular tombola and a fabulous tea and cakes stall. We look forward to seeing you there! For more information and place availability in September please call Lisa Johnston, 07751 072765, or go to our website www.strichardspreschool.org.uk
