From the pastor Welcome to our second study booklet for 2013. These booklets are a key feature of life at Lakeshore not only in helping us study God’s Word together but keeping us up to date and praying for church life. We will be continuing our study of the Gospel of Mark this term. The series is called ‘Meeting Jesus.’ I hope that as we read through Mark that you’ll be freshly introduced to Jesus our Lord and Saviour. Please pray that others will join us to ‘meet’ Jesus for the first time and turn to Him as their Lord and Saviour. About this study booklet The studies in this booklet link into the sermon series at church. The dates of the talks are listed with the introduction and each study is to follow the talk of the same title. This approach enables group time to be spent digging deeper into the Bible and also to discuss issues or questions raised by the talk. This also, importantly, enables the Growth Group to have a strong focus on application, sharing, accountability and prayer. We aim to provide a copy of this study booklet to every regular attendee at Lakeshore whether you’ve been with us for only a few weeks or for several years. We would love everyone to be involved in one of our Growth Groups and do the studies in that context. But if you are presently unable to join a group you can still work through the studies each week following the sermons. Also on every regular being mobilized and serving in the life and activities of Lakeshore. After his resurrection, the Lord Jesus commissioned his followers to ‘Go and make disciples of all nations’ (Matt 28:19) – or more literally ‘As you go, make disciples’, as you go about your daily life make sure you are making disciples. I do hope that longing to see people come to know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour is a mark of our church. To help us think about this we are approaching church as if it is a lifeboat not a cruise liner. I do hope that as disciples of Jesus we are intentionally building relationships and praying for people to become disciples of Jesus. Because disciples make disciples! Because in the Gospel of Mark, we meet Jesus. Mark is the story of Jesus, the greatest person in all of history. We discover who Jesus is and what he came to do. We witness his power, we are amazed at his wisdom, we are touched by his grace and we are called to follow him as his disciples. We see him lay down his life on the cross as our Saviour and rise to life again as our Lord. Mark’s gospel is the closest in time to Jesus and is based on information supplied by Peter. No one knew Jesus better than Peter. In this Gospel we are in touch with the historical Jesus. Christians will read Mark because it lets them see Jesus through the eyes of a contemporary disciple. Those who do not count themselves as believers will be interested in Mark as an early account of the most infl uential fi gure of history. Mark’s is the shortest of the four Gospels as well as the most action-fi lled. Mark is more interested to tell us what Jesus did rather than what he said. He tells his story simply, in an understated way, but with great emotional power. Yet despite Mark’s outward simplicity the book runs very deep. Not everything in it will be clear at the fi rst reading. So -- read this Gospel, pray, listen to sermons, discuss questions in growth groups… and meet Jesus!
