    Tsibi Geva selected to represent Israeli Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia 5 February 2015 – Tsibi Geva has been selected to present Archeology of the Present for the Israeli Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. Geva, who lives and works in Tel Aviv, is one of Israel’s most prominent and influential artists, and has exhibited extensively in major exhibitions across Israel, America, and Europe. Geva works in diverse media, his work often pushing beyond its physical limits into unique large-scale site- specific installations. Archeology of the Present will cover both the exterior and interior of the Pavilion, and will encompass the formal and thematic characteristics of Geva’s work as it has evolved throughout his career. In a year when curator Okuwi Enwezor, proposes to focus on All the World’s Futures, Geva’s site-specific, all-encompassing installation may also be read with regard to the current state of humanity and the world. Geva’s work contains numerous layers of significance shaped by processes of figuration and abstraction, revelation and concealment. The question of painting in particular, and of the art object in general, is present in his work alongside political and cultural questions, which simultaneously camouflage and enhance one another. Employing disruption and displacement, repetition and accumulation, Geva makes hybrid works that open up new discursive channels. Archeology of the Present will present paintings alongside sculptural installations and abandoned and manipulated objects, while abolishing the hierarchical distinctions between artistic mediums and structure. In doing so, it will give expression to Geva’s ongoing concern with elements related to the notion of ‘home’ – including terrazzo tiles, windows, shutters, lattices, cement blocks; elements which exist as fragments of what once was or could in principle constitute a home.

The exhibition features a new body of work created over the past two years, defined by Geva’s focus on deconstruction and abstraction to convey the emotional and cultural tenor of his surroundinGs. Motifs of terrazzo tiles, stone walls, and latticework, which have been prevalent in Geva’s paintinGs since the nineteen-nineties, are pushed to the forefront in these new works. July 05, 2017 - Albertz Benda is pleased to present Tsibi Geva: Jolt, a solo exhibition of new and recent work by one of Israel’s most critically acclaimed artists, on view from October 12 – November 18, 2017. Having shown in New York with Annina Nosei for the past two decades, it will be the artists first exhibition at Albertz Benda, featuring a new body of work and selected pieces from his solo presentation in the Israeli Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale. In his latest series of paintings, Geva addresses concepts such as migration, instability and disintegration from a sociopolitical perspective and within the medium of painting itself. The layers of paint on the canvas alternately reveal and obscure fragments of bodies, architectural structures, and natural elements. These layered compositions confront the physicality of the materials while reflecting personal and cultural discourses. Geva delves into his psyche through a process of spontaneous mark-making and expressive gesture in the spirit of- but not defined by- abstract expressionism while also channeling the atmosphere of his surroundings. In works such as Untitled, 2017, the rounded forms and flowing paint flirt with representation, evoking an aerial landscape, a shrouded, injured figure, a hole or a wound.

    INCONVERSATION TSIBI GEVA with Phong Bui and Jonathan T.D. Neil Israeli artist Tsibi Geva’s exhibition, Paintings 2011 – 2013, curated by Barry Schwabsky, was on view at American University at the Katzen Arts Center in Washington D.C. from November 5 to December 15, 2013. An expanded version of the exhibition, entitled Tsibi Geva: Recent and Early Works and co- curated by Schwabsky with Giorgia Calò, is currently on view at MACRO Testaccio in Rome. Paintings 2011 – 2013 will travel in 2015 to the Mönchehaus Museum of Modern Art in Goslar, Germany, and Geva will be Israel’s representative at the 2015 Venice Biennial. The painter Tsibi Geva and Al Held Critical Essay Editor Jonathan T.D. Neil paid a visit to Rail HQ (initially in the summer of 2010, the conversation was then carried further in a few recent email exchanges) to talk with Rail publisher Phong Bui about Geva’s life and work. Phong Bui: Can you give us a context of how this particular show came about? Tsibi Geva: The exhibition Tsibi Geva: Recent and Early Works at MACRO Testaccio Museum in Rome (showing until September 14, 2014), is an expanded version of the exhibition I had in Washington in 2013, which focused on my paintings from the last four years. In Rome, the exhibition also features early works from my 1980s series Biladi Biladi, and a site-specific installation which combines sculptures from the Lattice series and paintings from my Keffiyeh series. This exhibition can be seen as a mini-retrospective. We tried to imply the conceptual and formal connections that exist between different groups of works from different periods, which are polyphonically interwoven.

The exhibition features a new body of work created over the past two years, defined by Geva’s focus on deconstruction and abstraction to convey the emotional and cultural tenor of his surroundings. Motifs of terrazzo tiles, stone walls, and latticework, which have been prevalent in Geva’s paintings since the nineteen-nineties, are pushed to the forefront in these new works. These Mediterranean urban patterns, once abstracted, become a reflection of a collective subconscious, revealing a conflicted, restless landscape where borders are in a constant negotiation. The various patterns are applied in layers that flow into one another, in entropic fashion. With expressive and spontaneous gestures, Geva collapses the distance between the precarious cultural amalgam of the present and the region’s splintered history. Transcending familiar schemas and grids, Geva continuously constructs, erases, and builds from the found remnants of his process to produce paintings that oscillate between various compositional options within a single canvas.
