He collected 3,000 pieces of Armenian music. He was in prison and taken to a Turkish prison. Komitas is a symbol of Armenian art. He became a vartapad. Komitas was an Armenian priest and singer. Vache & Sako got to know Aram Khachaturian: Aram Khachaturian traveled to Europe. He did not have proper musical training. He has concerts of his own work. He was a composer. He also went to Latin America. His most famous piece was the Saber Dance. Haylee & Laurene got to know Hovhannes Shiraz: Hovhannes Shiraz married Silva Kaputikyan. His dad was killed during the Armenian Genocide. He was known as Shiraz. He wrote poems whose titles were “Ani” and “ My Mother.” Hovhannes Shiraz studies at Yerevan State University. Natalia, Isabella, & Nicholas got to know Arno Babajanian: Arno Babajanian studies at Yerevan’s Music School. He played the piano trio in F#. Arno Babajanian was born in Yerevan, Armenia. Babajanian was a great piano teacher. He was known as the “people’s artist.” Babajanian went to Europe to play in a concert. It was a sunny Friday morning and our class just finished our first class novel. We walked into our classroom and were stunned! We instantly knew our teacher was up to something. She had that silly smile on her face. Suddenly, we noticed that our desks were all turned sideways which made it look like a long dining table. Our teacher told us to have a seat. Then, we were instructed to make fox masks. We took an entire period to make them. As we were making the masks, our teacher prepared our feast.     AT THE SUMMIT OF MOUNT ARARAT-MASIS Melkonyan A. A. Academician of NAS RA The most valuable and magnificent names of Ararat and Masis for us Armenians have been known since earliest times. Ararat is mentioned in the Bible as a name mountains where Noah’s ark rested after the Flood subsided1. The word Ararat is presented as Armenia In Vulgatae and King James Bible2. It is suggested that the names of both Aratta (the 3rd millennium BC) of the Sumerian and Urartu (Van Kingdom, the first half of the 1st millennium BC) of the Assyrian cuneiform sources are derivations of the name of Ararat3. Great Ararat-Masis (5165 m) and Lesser Masis (Sis) (3925 m) Armenian historical sources preserved several mythological and folk legends connected with Great Masis and Hayk Patriarch’s generations (the 3rd-1st millennia BC) and kings of Great Armenia Artashes I (189-160 BC) and Trdat III (298-330 AD)4.     ARARAT MARZ GUIDEBOOK 2014 ARARAT FACTS ARARAT Ararat is one of Armenia’s 10 provinces, whose capital is Artashat. Named after Mount Ararat, the province borders Turkey to the west and Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to the south. Two former Armenian capitals are located in this region, Artashat and Dvin, as well as the Khor Virap monastery, significant as the place of Gregory the Illuminator’s 13-year imprisonment and for being the closest point to Mount Ararat within Armenian borders. The province consists of 97 com- munities, known as hamaynkner, of which four are considered urban and 93 rural. Spanning an area of 1995 km2 and home to a population of 311,400 people, its administrative Center is Artashat which is 29km from Yerevan. Ararat borders the following provinces: Armavir to the northwest, Kotayk to the north, Gegharkunik 1. It is rumoured that Sir Winston’s favourite tipple came out of the Ararat valley in the east and Vayots Dzor to the southeast. Ararat also has a border with the city of Yerevan in the north, between its borders with Armavir and Kotayk. Ararat’s moun- tains include the Yeranos range, Vishapasar 3157m, Geghasar 3443m, and Kotuts 2061m, Urts 2445m. The province also has a number of lakes including: Sev, Azat, Armush, and Karalich as well as the Arax, Azat, Hrazdan, Yotnakunk, Vedi, and Artashat Rivers. During the period from 331 BC to 428 AD, the Armenian Kingdom was also known as Greater Armenia (Mets Hayk) and consisted of 15 states. One of those original states was Ayrarat.

    January 2008 Simon Payaslian authors new history of Armenia In December Palgrave Macmillan published Professor Simon Payaslian’s The History of Armenia. In his Preface, the author presents the volume as a survey of the history of Armenia from antiquity to the pres- ent, with a focus on four major themes: East-West geopolitical competi- tions, Armenian culture (e.g., language and religion), political leader- ship (e.g., nakharars or the nobility, intellectuals and party leaders), and the struggle for national survival. It places Armenian history within the broader context of secularization, modernization, and globalization. We are pleased to reprint a section from a chapter on “Independ- ence and Democracy: The Second Republic”: rmenians worldwide greeted the independence regained by the Republic of Armenia with great fanfare and jubilation. ASeven decades of Soviet hegemonic rule had come to an end, and Armenian expectations and imaginations soared high. National sovereignty strengthened national pride, and Armenians once more considered themselves as belonging to the community of nation-states. And the Republic of Armenia had much to be proud of, for it had built a modern country, even if under the shadow of the Stalinist legacy. Clearly the newly independent republic in 1991 appeared infinitesimally different from the soci- ety that had fallen to the Bolsheviks in 1921. Soon after inde- pendence, however, it became apparent that domestic sys- temic deficiencies would not permit the immediate introduc- tion of political and economic policies predicated on princi- ples of democratization and liberalization. The obsolete institutions, bureaucratic customs, and the political culture as developed under the Communist Party hindered the transition from the centrally planned system to a more decentralized, democratic polity.

    TRAUMA AND IDENTITY: ON STRUCTURAL PARTICULARITIES OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE AND JEWISH HOLOCAUST1,2 Harutyun Marutyan Comparison of the Armenian Genocide and Jewish Holocaust memories allows us not only to discuss questions important for Armenian sociopolitical and scienti fi c thought regarding the start of the 21st century, but also for deriving useful lessons. The problems are examined from the point of view of memory stu dies and identity politics. The internationally recognized term “Holocaust” was used to characterize the Armenian mas sacres as far back as the end of the 19th century – beginning of the 20th century. The perception of a “unique” Holocaust and “primacy” of the Armenian Genocide in the 20th century are actually different characteristics of the same phenomenon: in the case of examination of the question from this point of view, the factor of “historiographical competitiveness” is gaining a secondary role, although it still exists in different manifestations of the collective memory. Giving priority to the ideological factor in the assessment of the organization and implementation of genocides allows Jews and Armenians alike to avoid the manifestations of ethnic opposition and to appear to the world in a more (from the point of view of Western values) preferable fashion. The Jewish institute of The Righteous Among the Nations cannot serve as a model for Armenians because of the absence of the factor of unselfi shness (in a great variety of cases) in the rescue of Armenian lives. In the Jewish, as well as in the Armenian memory, there is a fi ght against the stereotype of “being slaughtered like sheep”: in the Jewish case, the activities are mostly transferred to the fi eld of “moral resistance”, while in the Armenian case, the resistance of the Armenian people has not been emphasized as has the Jewish struggles, underground fi ghts and rebellions.

The history between the Kurdish and Armenian cultures goes back to the Ottoman Empire and soviet Armenia, till recent years with the formation of the Republic of Armenia. In the Ottoman Empire era, the Armenian- Kurdish relations were characterized by continuous confl ict. However, in Armenia such relations had a peaceful nature. Kurdish people always consider Armenia a country with best ground for the protection of their national identity. For more than seventy years, Armenians have had the possibility to have a state structure within the borders of a large Soviet empire and to promote the culture of one of its ethnic minorities: the Kurds. The Armenian Kurds have a dedicated radio program in Kurdish, a newspaper in Kurdish language called Rya Taza [New Way]; a Kurdish group within the Armenian Writers Union was in charge of reviewing contents in Kurdish language in a yearly almanac. The Kurdish of Armenia have their national organizations as well (“Kurdistan” committee, “Armenia’s Kurdish Community”). Several Armenian artists and intellectuals played a central role in the cultural development of an imaginary Kurdish nation in fi elds such as literature2, translation3, music4 and theater5. Such intellectual turmoil created a fi ctional form of Kurdish folk, which outbursted in several artistic expressions, and generated Kurdish heroes well presented in literature6, theatre, paintings, as well as in cinema.
