• Calculation of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Aegean Motorway S.A. aiming at reducing the Greenhouse Gas Emissions established a methodology of calculating the emissions resulting from its operation. The calculation of the company emissions was carried out based on ISO 14064-1:2006 and GHG Protocol.

In this framework, the Company carried out the calculation of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions for 2018, after taking into account data from its activities, which include: the consumption of fuels of vehicles and equipment; the consumption of electricity for operation of the motorway and of the installations; the staff’s transports from and to work; the cooling – heating of installations.

• Environmental performance - Reduction of paper use

In the beginning of 2018, in the context of modernisation of the services offered to subscribers of the eway service, the electronic issuance of monthly eway invoices was established, replacing their postal dispatch in printed form.

Aegean Motorway S.A. – Annual Environmental Management Report – January 2020 Page26

More specifically, the so far established process of issuance and postal dispatch of monthly invoices to subscribers (freelance professionals & companies, approximately 7,000), was replaced by their electronic issuance on My easy way portal (free application for the electronic management of subscribers’ accounts), though maintaining at the same time the previous process for the customers that request dispatch of hard copy invoices.

For the application of the new process, a relevant campaign was launched for the information of subscribers using information letters (attached email) and telephone communication, in view of ensuring on one hand the smooth transition to the new service and on the other hand to communicate the benefits of the new one and to “convince” the majority of subscribers to opt for the new way of service.

Apart from the obvious benefits, i.e. the significant reduction of the operating cost and modernisation of the service, the said process has brought additional environmental benefits.

Specifically, from the total of actions that preceded or followed the application of the new process, the number of subscribers who finally chose to maintain the dispatch of hard copy invoices at the end of 2019 was limited to approximately 600, i.e. 8.5% of subscribers (concerns only freelancers & companies). In addition, the reduction of paper use (Α4 pages and envelopes) reached 92%, since for the whole 2017 approximately 305,000 documents had been printed and sent by post, whereas in 2018 the relevant number reached 23,000 documents only.
