In particular, a large block was detached from a high of 70 meters and started to roll downslope and gradually became a rock slide. About 120 tones of rock material moved downward to the road resulting to the close of the national road. Few days after the slope failure, a field survey organized by the Department of Geology, AUTH took place in order to evaluate the rock fall hazard in the area and to define the triggering causal factors. As an out- come, we concluded that the heavily broken rock mass and the heavy rain-falls, of the previous days, contribute significantly to the generation of the slope failure. The rocky slope was limited stable and the high joint water pressure caused the failure of the slope. Key words: rock fall, Tempi, engineering geology, hazard, Greece 1. Abstract The study of the Kato Olympos karst system, based on the implementation of tracer tests and hydro- chemical analyses, is aimed at the investigation of surface-groundwater interaction, the delineation of the catchment area and the detection of the surface microbial source contamination of the Tempi karst springs. The study area is formed by intensively karstified carbonate rocks, metamorphic for- mations, Neogene sediments and Quaternary deposits. The significant karst aquifer discharges through karst springs in Tempi valley and in Pinios riverbed. The karst springs present important seasonal fluctuations in discharge rate, moderate mineralization with TDS between 562 to 630 mg/l + + - - and they belong to Ca-HCO3 water type. The inorganic pollution indicators, such as Na , K , Cl , NO3 + 3 , NH4 , PO4 , show low concentrations and do not reveal any surface influences. On the other hand, the presence of microbial parameters in karst springs proclaims the high rate of microbial contami- nation of karst aquifer. Tracer tests reveal hydraulic connection between the surface waters of Xirorema – Rapsani basin and the karst aquifer. The high values of groundwater flow velocity upwards of 200 m/h, show the good karstification rate of the carbonate formations and the cavy structure dom- inated in the study area, as well as the low self purification capability of the karst aquifer. -

Pagina 1 di 1 Introduced locally acquired malaria cases in Greece up to 28th September 2015: measures for blood safety According to information from the Hellenic Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) a total of 46 laboratory confirmed cases of malaria were reported up to 28th September 2015. Forty two (42) cases are classified as imported; 34 cases in immigrants from malaria endemic countries and 8 cases in travelers to endemic countries. Following a period of four years of intensive control measures to manage the reintroduction of Plasmodium Vivax Malaria the absence of such cases in 2014, four (4) locally acquired (introduced) malaria cases were reported to KE.EL.P.NO this year. The first case was reported in the municipality of Farkadona, prefecture of Trikala- region of Thessaly. The case is a 56 years old male of Greek nationality. The onset of symptoms was on the 4th August. The case reported no travel to any malaria endemic country and no history of recent blood transfusion. The second case was reported in Elos, municipality of Evrotas, prefecture of Lakonia. The case is a 40 years old female of Roumanian nationality who has been in Greece and working in Elos for the last 18 months.The onset of symptoms was on the 2nd September. She has no history of travel to any malaria endemic country and she has not reported recent blood transfusion. -

Thessaly is a rural region and consequently, the economic development is affiliated with the primary sector of economy. The employment in this sector is related to the size of rural areas, while the agricultural products serve as raw materials to the secondary sector. Water resources constitute a basic factor that influences the quantity of rural production and consequently, the exploitation and their rational management play a decisive role to the economic development of region. The demand for irrigation water, which especially during the summer months is great, shows significant regional variations in water availability. The most important issue is that water resources are not sufficient, while a significant part of water volume leads, mainly during the winter months, unexploited to the sea. in order to overcome the water shortage, several hydraulic public works are implemented. The major hydraulic work is the diversion of the acheloos river to Thessaly. in this paper the economic situation of the Thessaly region, the demand and the supply of water resources as well as the prospec- tive being developed after the construction of the afore-mentioned hydraulic work are analysed. SURVEILLANCE REPORT Annual Epidemiological Report for 2015 Malaria Key facts 6 199 confirmed malaria cases were reported to TESSy in 2015. The notification rate in 2015 was 1.0 cases per 100 000 population. 99.8% of the cases for which this information was provided were travel related. Seven confirmed cases were reported as locally acquired (five reported by Greece, one by Belgium and one by the Netherlands). The highest notification rates were reported in males in the age groups 15–24 and 25–44 years. The number of cases increased during the summer months and then decreased slowly until February. These changes most probably reflect travel patterns. The worldwide decrease in malaria incidence did not yet result in a decrease of travel-related cases reported in the EU/EEA. Therefore, awareness among travellers and clinicians – particularly among people visiting friends and relatives in endemic countries – should remain high. Local transmission of Plasmodium vivax remains possible in the EU and stresses the need for continued surveillance, preparedness and prevention activities. Methods This report is based on data for 2015 retrieved from The European Surveillance System (TESSy) on 30 June 2017. TESSy is a system for the collection, analysis and dissemination of data on communicable diseases. For a detailed description of methods used to produce this report, please refer to the Methods chapter [1]. An overview of the national surveillance systems is available online [2]. A subset of the data used for this report is available through ECDC’s online Surveillance atlas of infectious diseases [3]. Twenty-six EU/EEA countries provided information on malaria. -

It drains the entire drainage basin of Thessaly (eastern part of Central Greece), part of which is the largest plain of the country. In this research the hydrological, geomorpho- logical and geological characteristics of the riverine area of Pinios were studied. Classification and grouping of these characteristics were then carried out, which led to the segmentation of the Pinios River into seven sections, each one with its own set of thematic data. These sets assign separate functions and evolutions of the river system during the Quaternary. Specifically, the basin of the present Pinios River, before its evolution into a river basin, comprised three separate and independent systems. The present Pinios River emerged as a river system from the merging of the lacustrine paleoenvironments along with the major tributaries that drained large parts of the present hydrological basin and as soon as the karstic openings of the central hill valley and the Tempi valley took place during the Quaternary. The followed methodology for the segmentation of the river can be used for the study of heterogeneous river systems. -
