The INQUA scale is a new scale based solely on the earthquake-induced ground deformations, proposed by the INQUA Subcommission on Paleoseismicity. This scale is applied to the Sofades 1954 earthquake in order to test its accuracy and reliability. From the comparison among the evaluated intensities based on MM scale with the degrees of INQUA intensity at several locations, we conclude that, in case of earthquakes which triggered remarkable geological effects, these intensity values are about the same. Nonetheless, the use of INQUA scale is suggested in combination with the existing ones, as an assessing tool of the intensity based only on geological effects Key words: Intensity, Earthquake, INQUA, Greece. • The Statistical Battle for the Population of Greek Macedonia
XII. The Statistical Battle for the Population of Greek Macedonia by Iakovos D. Michailidis Most of the reports on Greece published by international organisations in the early 1990s spoke of the existence of 200,000 “Macedonians” in the northern part of the country. This “reasonable number”, in the words of the Greek section of the Minority Rights Group, heightened the confusion regarding the Macedonian Question and fuelled insecurity in Greece’s northern provinces.1 This in itself would be of minor importance if the authors of these reports had not insisted on citing statistics from the turn of the century to prove their points: mustering historical ethnological arguments inevitably strengthened the force of their own case and excited the interest of the historians. Tak- ing these reports as its starting-point, this present study will attempt an historical retrospective of the historiography of the early years of the century and a scientific tour d’horizon of the statistics – Greek, Slav and Western European – of that period, and thus endeavour to assess the accuracy of the arguments drawn from them. For Greece, the first three decades of the 20th century were a long period of tur- moil and change. Greek Macedonia at the end of the 1920s presented a totally different picture to that of the immediate post-Liberation period, just after the Balkan Wars. This was due on the one hand to the profound economic and social changes that followed its incorporation into Greece and on the other to the continual and extensive population shifts that marked that period. As has been noted, no fewer than 17 major population movements took place in Macedonia between 1913 and 1925.2 Of these, the most sig- nificant were the Greek-Bulgarian and the Greek-Turkish exchanges of population under the terms, respectively, of the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly and the 1923 Lausanne Convention.

I have only included a few contributions to the reading and interpretation of old finds as well as a small selection of publications that adduce inscriptions for the study of religious phenomena. I have also summarizes some publications of earlier years that had not been included in earlier issues of the EBGR (2007–2013). 2 In this issue, I summarize the content of new corpora from Athens (34), Macedonia (56. 109), Termessos (64), and Hadrianopolis (79) that mainly contain dedications, but also records of manumission through dedication to deities (56). The two most important new inscriptions are the incantations from Selinous (?), known as the ‘Getty hexameters’ and a cult regulation from Thessaly.

  • An Insight Guide of Prespa Lakes Region Short Description of the Region
An Insight Guide of Prespa Lakes Region Short description of the region Located in the north-western corner of Greece at 850 metres above sea level and surrounded by mountains, the Prespa Lakes region is a natural park of great significance due to its biodiversity and endemic species. Prespa is a trans boundary park shared between Greece, Albania and FYR Macedonia. It only takes a few moments for the receptive visitor to see that they have arrived at a place with its own unique personality. Prespa is for those who love nature and outdoor activities all year round. This is a place to be appreciated with all the senses, as if it had been designed to draw us in, and remind us that we, too, are a part of nature. Prespa is a place where nature, art and history come together in and around the Mikri and Megali Prespa lakes; there are also villages with hospitable inhabitants, always worth a stop on the way to listen to their stories and the histories of the place. The lucky visitor might share in the activities of local people’s daily life, which are all closely connected to the seasons of the year. These activities have, to a large extent, shaped the life in Prespa. The three main traditional occupations in the region are agriculture, animal husbandry and fishing. There are a lot of paths, guiding you into the heart of nature; perhaps up into the high mountains, or to old abandoned villages, which little by little are being returned once more to nature’s embrace.

  • “Quality Systems and Practices in Agro-Ecotourism Enterprises in Rural Trans - Border Regions”
Dr. Electra Pitoska1 “Quality systems and practices in agro-ecotourism enterprises in rural trans - border regions”. Tourism comprises a self- contained phenomenon synonymous to consumption and spare time and its growth. Due to the development of technology and the improvement of the standards of living it has taken global dimensions. As a result tourism has developed into a pure industry, leading the economy and society in local, regional, national and global level towards important changes. Based on the quality and the value of the natural and cultural heritage, as well as on the growth of the level of the given services, tourism developed several alternative types. An alternative type of tourism is agro-ecotourism, which went through an enormous rise and demand. The change of consumer’s behavior and tourist’s consideration of the environment has led organizations that take actions in that sector, into the adoption of high level of standards in all aspects of the generative procedure. The main reason for this continual improvement of the service level and the quality of the given services, as well as the clamp-down for the protection of the environment, was the reason that sustainable tourist growth became a strategic aim. The quality and the practices that ensure sustainability are a continuous procedure which is accomplished by the implementation of quality systems, aiming to achieve the Total Quality. Companies that comply with the specific standards receive quality marks, which conform to this kind of favor that will remain to the consumer’s consciousness. In that perspective, the aim of the research was to examine whether agro-ecotouristic enterprises are certified for the given services, for the protection of the consumers/ tourists, as well as for the protection of the environment.

Although there is no muezzin to call the faithful to prayer there are still in existence three extremely well-preserved buildings left from the Ottoman occupation that ended in 1913. Two mosques – the Tsitsirli and Ahmet Pasha – and the third is the Bezesteni market, which now houses the Archaeological Museum and it is well known for its 6 domes. If you have a sweet tooth then Serres is the place to be! They have wonderful Turkish delights, Akanedes in the local dialect and Loukoumia in Greek, as well as the most famous Bougatsa, a pastry pie filled with crème patisserie and dusted with powdered sugar. There are varieties of bougatses with savoury fillings like cheese, spinach or minced meat but nothing compares to the sweet sugary taste of the original! Lake Kerkini in the shade of Mount Beles is a wetland full of wonderful pictures. Boating with the "blavas", the name for the boats, the picturesque villages and the rare fauna make up a frame of absolute enjoyment. Fort Rupel, the largest underground fort amongst the 21 forts named “Metaxas Line”, a reference point of the Greek resistance to the upcoming occupation, fills the visitor with pride. Alistrati cave complex is one of the largest and most beautiful systems in Greece.

  • The Struggle of Hellenism Over Macedonia
THE STRUGGLE OF HELLENISM OVER MACEDONIA A SURVEY OF RECENT BIBLIOGRAPHY The rise of nationalities, European power politics and the impending dissolution of the Ottoman empire had converted the Balkans at the end of last and the beginning of this century into a field of fierce national antagonism. Events, especially in that vast area of the peninsula, geogra phically from very remote times known by the name of Macedonia, had gone far beyond the Turkish state’s boundaries and had become matters of international concern. "The Macedonian Question” drew at one time the attention of public opinion all over Europe and, up to this moment, presents a most interesting subject to the scholar of Balkan history. From the Greek side, the Macedonian Question has been nothing but the compulsory struggle of Hellenism to keep its position against Bulgarian infiltration strongly agitated by foreign power politics; the outcome of the struggle is primarily due to the overwhelmingly in all respects superiority of the Greek element in the disputed area, its vitality and will for resistance. The assistance given by the Kingdom of Greece at the last stage of the fight (1904- 1908) would have otherwise been fruitless. An effort to study this subject from a more general scope has re cently been undertaken under the auspices of the Institute f or Balkan Studies of the Society for Macedonian Studies in Thessalonike. The effort includes the collection of all published or unpublished material, of manuscripts, handwritten notes, letters, photographs, newspapers of that time, official consular reports, Turkish documents etc. and their examination by a special staff.
