Section A provides a selected sample of 101 course and program descriptions submitted by teachers or program directors. This section includes reading lists and texts. Section B is a bibliography of books, articles, reports, and reference materials related to leadership and leadership education. Most of the material is annotated. Section C consists of an annotated list of films and videos; a distributor list with addresses; and a list of resources useful in identifying, locating, and acquiring films and videos. Section D contains items and articles that go beyond the usual content of instructional plans. They suggest ways of articulating various parts of courses and programs and thinking about new and provocative ideas in leadership studies. Section E is a list of respondents to a survey who indicated that they would be willing to serve as resource persons for the community of leadership educators. The list is current as of January 1987. Section F identifies some of the organizations interested or involved in leadership. Finally, there is an index to courses and collectibles. INTRODUCTION Leadership Education '87 is broader in scope and different in content from the Source Book published in 1986. The '86 edition was targeted specifi cally at those who were offering or planning courses and programs in lead ership education in institutions of higher education. It became clear al most as soon asthe book circulatedthat itwasa valuable resource. There were many who wanted to know more about what was being offered in leadership developmentoutside traditional colleges and universities. Users indicated also that they were adapting existing materials to their needs and would appreciate a selective list of resource persons with whom they could communicate. Since it was our intent not only to extend the base of those interested in leadership development but to generate inno vative ideas about education in this area, we welcomed the opportunity to incorporate the suggestions and contributions of a wider audience. There fore, Leadership Education '87 is intended for use by all who are commit ted to the study or development of leadership in its many aspects. The looseleaf form has been maintained, since it continues to be a hand book for reference,for adaptation,for addition and deletion,andfor personalization. Its pages are not intended to be kept in perfect order; the page numbering is intended for collation in our printroom and to sim plify the use of the indices. Go ahead, cut, paste and put together a form most useful for you! Extra tabs have been included so that you can put your own program, your own courses, and your own notes into the binder. We have prefaced each section with a table of contents and a brief message to tell you our intent. But it is your book now. Every contributor has put a little of him or 2rself into the material represented and you are in vited to reframe it to fit your style. The field of leadership education is not so stabilized that you need to worry about having destroyed its basic tenets by adding your creative thinking toit. You may takethe opportunity to share your thoughts with others; your contribution may be of greater significance than you could have imagined. We ask again for your evaluations of the courses you teach, of the films, books, and articles you utilize. The bibliography and films (Sections B and C) are annotated, but we need to know whether you agree or disagree with the choice of materials. If you put together a new course that is re ceiving rave reviews, let us know so that we can inform others aboutyour success. If you have been evaluating your program for a significant period of time, and have collected data that will be enlightening to others, let us know so that we can circulate the news. If you are nota contributor tothis book and believethat your work should be included, inform us so that we can determine the time and format for anew edition.If your name is notonour Resource Persons list (Section E) and you would like to be part of the network, please ask us to place your name on the list. The Collectibles section has been retained because itis a natural place to present materials that are not syllabi or program descriptions but are closely related to the educational process and studies in leadership. Our mission is to encourage and develop creative leadership and ef- fective management for the good of society overall. We accomplish our mission through research, training, and publication with emphasis on the widespread, innovative application ofthe behavioral sciences to the challenges facing the leaders of today andtomorrow.     ARTH 787: Seminar in Contemporary Art Feminist and Queer Art History, 1971-present Spring 2007 Professor Richard Meyer ([email protected]) Mondays, 2-4:50 p.m. Dept. of Art History, University of Pennsylvania Jaffe 201 Course Description and Requirements This seminar traces the development of a critical literature in feminist and gay/lesbian art history. Beginning with some foundational texts of the 1970s (Linda Nochlin’s "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?,” James Saslow’s "Closets in the Museum: Homophobia and Art History"), we will examine how art historians, artists, critics, and curators have addressed issues of gender and sexuality over the course of the last three decades. The seminar approaches feminist and queer art history as distinct, if sometimes allied, fields of inquiry. Students will be asked to attend closely to the historical specificity of the texts and critical debates at issue in each case. Students are expected to complete all required reading prior to seminar meetings and to discuss the texts and critical issues at hand during each session. On a rotating basis, each student will prepare a 2-page response to an assigned text which will then be used to initiate discussion in seminar. Toward the end of the semester, students will deliver a 15-minute presentation on their seminar research to date. In consultation with both the professor and the other seminar members, each student will develop his or her oral presentation into a final paper of approximately 20 - 25 pages. Markert Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Curatorial Practice California College of the Arts April 22, 2021 Not for the Uncommitted: The Alliance of Figurative Artists, 1969–1975 Emily Markert California College of the Arts 2021 From 1969 through the early 1980s, hundreds of working artists gathered on Manhattan’s Lower East Side every Friday at meetings of the Alliance of Figurative Artists. The art historical canon overlooks figurative art from this period by focusing on a linear progression of modernism towards medium specificity. However, figurative painters persisted on the periphery of the New York art world. The size and scope of the Alliance and the interests of the artists involved expose the popular narrative of these generative decades in American art history to be a partial one promulgated by a few powerful art critics and curators. This exploration of the early years of the Alliance is divided into three parts: examining the group’s structure and the varied yet cohesive interests of eleven key artists; situating the Alliance within the contemporary New York arts landscape; and highlighting the contributions women artists made to the Alliance. Total Art Journal • Volume 1 No. 1 • Summer 2011 • http://www.totalartjournal.com In spring 2010, New York’s Museum of Modern Art hosted a popular and controversial retrospective of Marina Abramović’s oeuvre entitled The Artist is Present. Abramović herself participated in one seated per- formance at the exhibition and models were hired to play other roles she had become famous for. The retrospective included “Imponderabilia,” in which an unclothed man and woman stand in a doorway. For the first staging in 1977, Abramović and Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen) stood at the show’s entrance, in such close proximity that they forced most visitors to enter sideways and touch them both. Part of the work’s purpose was to see how the audience would respond to the gendered naked bodies.2 Audience squirming and forced decision-making were crucial elements of the piece, and are part of why it became so notorious.

This dissertation is the first survey of a group of painters working in this mode, all born around the 1920s and living in New York. Several, though not all, were students of Hans Hofmann; most knew one another; some were close friends or colleagues as art teachers. I highlight nine artists: Rosemarie Beck (1923-2003), Leland Bell (1922-1991), Nell Blaine (1922-1996), Robert De Niro (1922-1993), Paul Georges (1923-2002), Albert Kresch (b. 1922), Mercedes Matter (1913-2001), Louisa Matthiasdottir (1917-2000), and Paul Resika (b. 1928). This group of artists has been marginalized in standard art historical surveys and accounts of the period.

    Forbidden Discourse: The Silencing of Feminist Criticism of “Gender” An open statement from 48 radical feminists from seven countries. August 12, 2013 [with updated addition of signatures 9/30/13] We, the undersigned 1960s radical feminists and current activists, have been concerned for some time about the rise within the academy and mainstream media of “gender theory,” which avoids naming men and the system of male supremacy as the beneficiaries of women’s oppression. Our concern changed to alarm when we learned about threats and attacks, some of them physical, on individuals and organizations daring to challenge the currently fashionable concept of gender. Recent developments: A U.S. environmental organization that also calls itself radical feminist is attacked for its political analysis of gender. Feminist conferences in the U.K., U.S. and Canada are driven from their contracted locations for asserting the right of women to organize for their liberation separately from men, including M>F (male to female) transgendered people. Deep Green Resistance (DGR) reports1 that queer activists defaced its published materials and trans activists threatened individual DGR members with arson, rape and murder. Bookstores are pressured not to carry DGR’s work and its speaking events are cancelled after protests by queer/transgender activists. At “RadFem” conferences in London2, Portland3 and Toronto4, trans activists accuse scheduled speakers of hate speech and/or being transphobic because they dare to analyze gender from a feminist political perspective. Both M>F transgender people and “men’s rights” groups, operating separately but using similar language, demand to be included in the Rad Fem 2013 conference in London called to fight against women’s oppression and for liberation.

    Jade Sturrock Year 4: Painting and Printmaking 2015/16 Word Count: 10,963 Excluding Quotes, Footnotes, Bibliography and Appendices Supervisor: Sarah Smith Glasgow School of Art The Female Nude’s Relationship with Feminist Art and Criticism: From Second Wave to Para-Feminism Synopsis This dissertation asks: Have the criticisms surrounding 70s feminist art negatively impacted contemporary female artists’ approaches when engaging with the female nude? Chapter one draws upon key writings by Lynda Nead, Linda Nochlin, Whitney Chadwick and Hilary Robinson to examine criticisms of a range of artworks that provoked a strong feminist reaction during the period of second wave feminism, primarily focusing on the work of Hannah Wilke. In doing so an overview of the social and political agendas behind female artists’ work dealing with the nude during the feminist era of the 70s is provided. This creates a context for Chapter two in which to explore the various relationships contemporary female artists have to the category of feminist art, focusing on artists Vanessa Beecroft, Cecily Brown and Pipilotti Rist. The first two case studies analyse selected works which reveal the problematic ‘post-feminist’ rhetoric in which the rejection of feminism is deemed necessary in the creation of ‘successful’ art. Discussed in parallel with key texts by Ariel Levy and Amelia Jones, it is revealed how feminist content, including emotion are often side-lined in favour of masculinist objective readings. The main concern of this dissertation is to uncover the problematic nature of combining theory and practice when depicting the nude, and conclusively proposes that, despite these issues, a continual engagement and development of feminist theory (defined as ‘para-feminism’) is necessary for contemporary female artists such as Pipilotti Rist to positively contextualise their work in a clear and unrestrictive manner.
