Gordon (1832–1892) – einem wichtigen Intellektuellen der jüdi- schen a ufklärung – ist ein bekanntes hebräisches g edicht. d ieses g edicht zeichnet sich durch eine kühne, scharfe Kritik an den traditionellen jüdischen Einrichtungen aus, welche nach meinung des a utors ein unbedingtes ü berdenken erforderten. g ordons literarisches Werk ist von der jüdisch-aschkenasischen Welt inspiriert. Dieses einzigar- tige und innovative Gedicht wurde ins Judenspanische (Ladino) übersetzt. Der Artikel möchte die sephardische Version von Gordons Gedicht vorstellen. Es soll versucht werden, die Hintergründe für die Übersetzung dieses Werks in Ladino zu analysie- ren, die Rezeption der Übersetzung durch die Leserschaft und die Herausforderungen, denen sich der anonyme Übersetzer stellen musste, der das Werk der ladino-lesenden Öffentlichkeit im vollen Bewusstsein zugänglich machen wollte, dass diese Version sich deutlich vom zugrundeliegenden aschkenasischen Original unterscheidet. Abstract Kotzo shel yod by Y. L. Gordon (1832–1892) – one of the prominent intellectuals of the Jewish Enlightenment period – is a well-known Hebrew poem. This poem is characterized by a daring, sharp criticism of the traditional Jewish institutions, which the author felt required a critical shake-up. Gordon’s literary works were inspired by the Jewish a shkenazi world. t his unique and pioneering literary work was translated into Judeo-Spanish (Ladino). The aim of this article is to present the Sephardic version of Gordon’s poem. -

Gematria Gematria is a traditional Jewish system of assigning a numerical value to a each letter forming a word or phrase to uncover hidden or symbolical spiritual meaning. The presumption behind this practice is that the numerical equivalence to words is not coincidental since the world was created through the “Word” of God (John 1:1-4). Each letter holds a sequential value that totals to the sum of a particular word or phrase. The result enhances spiritual understanding and harmony of interrelationships consistent between words, numbers, concepts and ideas. While this system originated with the Greeks centuries before the birth of Christ, the significant contributions of scholar Ivan Panin (documentation provided below) with advancement of technology has caused a growing number of bible believers today to appreciate its profound spiritual implications. “Word-based numerology probably began in the 8th century BCE Mesopotamia; Greeks practised isopsepjoa (letter-based calculation) from the 5th century BCE. Hebrew gematria only arrived in c. 100 BCE, yet soon grew in complexity. Gematria is often used to detect the secret meaning of holy texts. Unsurprisingly, it became a indispensable tool of Jewish mystics (kabbalists) down the ages. 1 God is A Mathematician By Keith Newman The authenticity of the Holy Bible has been attacked at regular intervals by atheists and theologians alike but none have explained away the mathematical seal beneath its surface. It would seem the divine hand has moved to prevent counterfeiting in the pages of the Bible in a similar manner to the line that runs through paper money. Bible numerics appears to be God's watermark of authenticity. -

Deciphering Jewish Gravestones Philip Trauring Originally published on bloodandfrogs.com March 8, 2020 My 2011 article on Jewish gravestone symbols has long been one of the most popular posts on my web site. In that article, I discuss the symbols found on Jewish gravestones, but not the text. I wrote in the first paragraph that I will likely write about the text at some point in the future. Unfortunately, I waited nine years to do so, but here’s a look at some of the Hebrew text you might find on a Jewish gravestone, and how to decipher it. We should get some terminology out the way. We’re talking about Hebrew inscriptions on מצבה kever, and the gravestone itself a קבר gravestones. In Hebrew we call the grave a matseva (lit. monument). There isn’t a particularly good Hebrew word for epitaph (the the writing on the gravestone. We do use the word הכתובת על המצבה inscription), it’s just hesped for eulogy, and you can think of some of the inscription to be a eulogy. As this הספד is intended as an introduction to this topic, I’ll simply use the English terms most of the time. Let’s jump in with a gravestone I photographed in Warsaw in 2018. I like this inscription because it’s fairly clear and it duplicates almost all the information from the Hebrew in Polish, allowing everything to be confirmed. We have here a Professor Markus Zamenof, who was born in 1837 and died in 1907. I’ve underlined key parts of the Hebrew, and explain it all in the table below the photo. -

Sun Academia Sinica The paper examines four areas of marked inflectional morphology (affinity between the past and the progressive, aspiration inversion, tonal inversion, ablaut) in the formation of verb stems in the Puxi dialect of Shangzhai, an underexplored Tibeto-Burman language of northwestern Sichuan. Partial parallels in other languages of the rGyalrong Tibetans suggest retention of relic alternation patterns confined to these particular Tibeto-Burman languages. The morphological archaisms uncovered in this study not only vindicate the intimate ties between Horpa and Shangzhai noted earlier by this author (J. T.-S. Sun 2000), but constitute crucial individual-identifying evidence pointing to a unique low-level parent language PROTO-RGYALRONGIC shared by rGyalrong proper, Lavrung, and Horpa-Shangzhai, paving the way for rigorous comparative rGyalrongic linguistics. "VTSFDIUMJDIFO (SàOEFOTUFIU EJFTF"CCJMEVOH OJDIUJN0QFO "DDFTT[VS 7FSGàHVOH The Role of Hebrew Letters in Making the Divine Visible KATRIN KOGMAN-APPEL hen Jewish figural book art began to develop in central WEurope around the middle of the thirteenth century, the patrons and artists of Hebrew liturgical books easily opened up to the tastes, fashions, and conventions of Latin illu- minated manuscripts and other forms of Christian art. Jewish book designers dealt with the visual culture they encountered in the environment in which they lived with a complex process of transmis- sion, adaptation, and translation. Among the wealth of Christian visual themes, however, there was one that the Jews could not integrate into their religious culture: they were not prepared to create anthropomorphic representations of God. This stand does not imply that Jewish imagery never met the challenge involved in representing the Divine. Among the most lavish medieval Hebrew manu- scripts is a group of prayer books that contain the liturgical hymns that were commonly part of central European prayer rites. Many of these hymns address God by means of lavish golden initial words that refer to the Divine. These initials were integrated into the overall imagery of decorated initial panels, their frames, and entire page layouts in manifold ways to be analyzed in what follows. Jewish artists and patrons developed interesting strategies to cope with the need to avoid anthropomorphism and still to give way to visually powerful manifestations of the divine presence. Among the standard themes in medieval Ashkenazi illuminated Hebrew prayer books (mahzorim)1 we find images of Moses receiving the tablets of the Law on Mount Sinai (Exodus 31:18, 34), commemorated during the holiday of Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks (fig. -

Biblical scholars, for instance, focused again on the interpretation of the notorious conundrum and on the Traditionsgeschichte of Antichrist. For some of those commentators it was a reply to the outpouring of sensationalist publications fuelled by the millennial mania. This paper aims to shed some light on the background, the sources, and the interpretation of the “number of the beast”. It explores the ancient techniques for understanding the conundrum including: gematria, arithmetic, symbolic, and riddle-based solutions. -

philological encounters � (�0�7) 368-387 brill.com/phen The Semitic Component in Yiddish and its Ideological Role in Yiddish Philology Tal Hever-Chybowski Paris Yiddish Center—Medem Library [email protected] Abstract The article discusses the ideological role played by the Semitic component in Yiddish in four major texts of Yiddish philology from the first half of the 20th century: Ysroel Haim Taviov’s “The Hebrew Elements of the Jargon” (1904); Ber Borochov’s “The Tasks of Yiddish Philology” (1913); Nokhem Shtif’s “The Social Differentiation of Yiddish: Hebrew Elements in the Language” (1929); and Max Weinreich’s “What Would Yiddish Have Been without Hebrew?” (1931). The article explores the ways in which these texts attribute various religious, national, psychological and class values to the Semitic com- ponent in Yiddish, while debating its ontological status and making prescriptive sug- gestions regarding its future. It argues that all four philologists set the Semitic component of Yiddish in service of their own ideological visions of Jewish linguistic, national and ethnic identity (Yiddishism, Hebraism, Soviet Socialism, etc.), thus blur- ring the boundaries between descriptive linguistics and ideologically engaged philology. iQa;;&u*,"" , I iii The "Orthodox" Orthography of Solomon Birnbaum Kalman Weiser YORK UNIVERSITY Apart from the YIVO Institute's Standard Yiddish Orthography, the prevalent sys tem in the secular sector, two other major spelling codes for Yiddish are current today. Sovetisher oysteyg (Soviet spelling) is encountered chiefly among aging Yid dish speakers from the former Soviet bloc and appears in print with diminishing frequency since the end of the Cold War. In contrast, "maskiIic" spelling, the system haphazardly fashioned by 19th-century proponents of the Jewish Enlightenment (which reflects now obsolete Germanized conventions) continues to thrive in the publications of the expanding hasidic sector. As the one group that has by and large preserved and even encouraged Yiddish as its communal vernacular since the Holocaust, contemporary ultra-Orthodox (and primarily hasidic) Jews regard themselves as the custodians of the language and its traditions. Yiddish is considered a part of the inheritance of their pious East European ancestors, whose way of life they idealize and seek to recreate as much as possible. l The historic irony of this development-namely, the enshrinement of the work of secularized enlighteners, who themselves were bent on modernizing East European Jewry and uprooting Hasidism-is probably lost upon today's tens of thousands of hasidic Yiddish speakers. The irony, however, was not lost on Solomon (in German, Salomo; in Yiddish, Shloyme) Birnbaum (1898-1989), a pioneering Yiddish linguist and Hebrew pa leographer in the ultra-Orthodox sector. This essay examines Birnbaum's own "Or thodox" orthography for Yiddish in both its purely linguistic and broader ideolog ical contexts in interwar Poland, then home to the largest Jewish community in Europe and the world center of Yiddish culture.
