Ma grand- mère m’a offert une caméra 8mm noir et blanc et j’ai fait mes débuts avec des films de famille. Plus tard, j’ai eu une caméra 16mm et j’ai tourné Eat your Make-up… A chaque fois, je montrais ces films dans l’enceinte des églises, on ne pouvait pas nous arrêter, car qui aurait osé le faire dans une église ? Et les prêtres ne pensaient pas à nous en empêcher… il y a pas mal de prêtres ne pensaient pas à nous en empêcher… il y a pas mal de prêtres bizarres… (rire)… J’essayais de distribuer ces films en les mettant dans ma voiture, et en allant les proposer à des cinémas qui passaient des programmes étranges. Plus tard, New Line Cinema est entré en piste : je leur ai envoyé Multiple maniacs. Ils ont dit : « Nous aimons le film, mais revenez quand vous aurez quelque chose de plus fignolé ». Il y a là des décors qui ressemblent à n’importe où. Si on tourne à New York ou à Paris, on sait qu’on est à New York ou à Paris. Baltimore donne l’impression qu’on est n’importe où aux USA. C’est une ville typique de la côte Est, elle n’est ni au Sud, ni au Nord, elle est au centre. Ce que j’aime, c’est le côté monstrueux des habitants, on peut encore y voir des femmes avec des coiffures impossibles et des maquillages insensés. Elles disent : « Quand vous avez trouvé le bon style, n’en démordez plus ! ». Ce que les punks new-wave essaient d’imiter, ces gens-là le portent sérieusement. Ils ont la mentalité la plus vieux jeu qui soit. A mes yeux, ils ont l’air plus punk que les punks, et ils sont persuadés qu’ils sont élégants, qu’ils ne sont pas du tout bizarres. Cela vient sûrement du fait que nous avons grandi à Baltimore, un groupe de bannis qui nous sommes rassemblés pour tourner, avec une volonté de provocation. Tous les gens que l’on voit dans les films sont mes meilleurs amis, ceux avec qui j’ai grandi, je ne crois pas que ce soit le cas d’Andy et de Paul. Et puis, l’Amérique, ce n’est pas seulement New York ou San Francisco. Je vais dans ces villes quand je veux m’amuser. Mais la majorité de la population vit ailleurs et si un film marche à Baltimore, il peut marcher partout. C’est l’Amérique profonde, les gens normaux, pas les stylistes de mode ou les gens de cinéma. J’adore aller au cinéma à Baltimore, en payant mon ticket : même si le film est épouvantable, les réactions des gens sont délectables. Je crois que Baltimore a une grande influence sur l’aspect de mes films, ce côté minable. et je ne pouvais pas continuer à me balader à travers Pensez-vous que vos films soient des sortes de séries B ? toute l’Amérique. En tout cas, ça m’a appris pas mal sur la distribution. Non, ce sont des séries D ou même E ! J’avis les cheveux longs, mais pas l’envie de m’asseoir dans la boue pour écouter Joan Baez à Woodstock… Ce n’était pas ma conception d’un bon moment… Je crois que mes films ont marché parce qu’ils étaient à l’opposé de ce que l’on était supposé faire. Chaque fois qu’on se heurte à une forme de censure, avec des gens qui essaient de vous empêcher de faire ce que vous aimez, cela ne peut que vous aider. Aujourd’hui, il faut faire E.T. pour attirer les gens. J’ai adoré E.T., ça me fait penser aux films de Walt Disney qui ont les meilleurs méchants qu’on ait vus, la sorcière de Blanche- Neige, ou Cruella dans Le 101 Dalmatiens. J’ai voulu faire des films où tous les personnages seraient des méchants. Les gentils sont tellement ennuyeux… Est-ce que vous pensez que la religion catholique vous a influencé ? More recently, new queer filmmakers have capitalized on increased (although by no means unproblematic) public acceptance to win critical recognition and commercial viability for their projects. The Hollywood Golden Era In the so-called Golden Era of Hollywood, there were a number of famous directors privately known for their alternative sexual preferences. These included George Cukor, Edmund Goulding, Mitchell Leisen, F.W. Murnau, Mauritz Stiller, James Whale, and Dorothy Arzner, who functioned with varying degrees of success in the industry. Cukor (1899-1983) is primarily famous as a prolific and assured director of women's films. His sexuality was a well known secret in Hollywood, and while it did not do substantial harm to his career, it is generally believed that his "fairy" reputation cost him the directorship of Gone With the Wind (1939), following objections from macho star Clark Gable. Although Cukor's work never overtly addresses gay issues, later critics and viewers have come to appreciate its many queer subtexts: Katharine Hepburn's cross dressing in Sylvia Scarlett (1935); the gloriously camp bitchiness in the dress and dialogue of the all women cast of The Women (1939); the effete figure of Kip in the classic Adam's Rib (1948).

Starting around 30 years ago, during the same time in the 1980’s that queer theory became a prominent academic discipline, queer cinema seems to encompass all films that deal with gay and lesbian themes, or ‘LGBT’ to use a recent term. As these themes focus mainly on the sexuality of the characters and their struggles in a ‘straight’ world because of it, there appears to be a major centring around desires, be it sexual or something else. If a desire is not desirable in heteronormative society, ‘queer’ is the right word for it. This thesis’ main focus is this notion of queer desires. By focusing on this aspect of the queer, I will show just how these desires can shape queer cinema and provide a unique framework for the analysis of the modern queer film.

Due to their non- normative embodiment, fat women typically face denigration and marginalization. Most mainstream film narratives reify the negative social positioning of fat women, often through assimilationist characters that resign themselves to fatphobia or otherwise compensate for their fatness. On the flipside, carnival and camp narratives foster liberatory fat characterization, as exemplified by the figure of “the unruly woman.” In his portrayal of both assimilationist and liberationist women, Divine functions as a barometer for subsequent fat characterization. Lauren J. Summersgill October 2014 3 Abstract This thesis investigates artistic post-mortem photography in the context of shifting social relationship with death in the 1980s and 1990s. Analyzing Nan Goldin’s Cookie in Her Casket and Andres Serrano’s The Morgue, I argue that artists engaging in post- mortem photography demonstrate care for the deceased. Further, that demonstrable care in photographing the dead responds to a crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s in America. At the time, death returned to social and political discourse with the visibility of AIDS and cancer and the euthanasia debates, spurring on photographic engagement with the corpse. Nan Goldin’s 1989 post-mortem portrait of her friend, Cookie in Her Casket, was first presented within The Cookie Portfolio. The memorial portfolio traced the friendship between Cookie and Goldin over fourteen years. The work relies on a personal narrative, framing the works within a familial gaze. I argue that Goldin creates the sense of family to encourage empathy in the viewer for Cookie’s loss. Further, Goldin’s generic and beautified post-mortem image of Cookie is a way of offering Cookie respect and dignity in death. Andres Serrano’s 1992 The Morgue is a series of large-scale cropped, and detailed photographs capturing indiscriminate bodies from within an unidentified morgue.

    John Waters (Writer/Director) Born in Baltimore, MD in 1946, John Waters was drawn to movies at an early age, particularly exploitation movies with lurid ad campaigns. He subscribed to Variety at the age of twelve, absorbing the magazine's factual information and its lexicon of insider lingo. This early education would prove useful as the future director began his career giving puppet shows for children's birthday parties. As a teen-ager, Waters began making 8-mm underground movies influenced by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, Walt Disney, Andy Warhol, Russ Meyer, Ingmar Bergman, and Herschell Gordon Lewis. Using Baltimore, which he fondly dubbed the "Hairdo Capitol of the World," as the setting for all his films, Waters assembled a cast of ensemble players, mostly native Baltimoreans and friends of long standing: Divine, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole and Edith Massey. Waters also established lasting relationships with key production people, such as production designer Vincent Peranio, costume designer Van Smith, and casting director Pat Moran, helping to give his films that trademark Waters "look." Waters made his first film, an 8-mm short, Hag in a Black Leather Jacket in 1964, starring Mary Vivian Pearce. Waters followed with Roman Candles in 1966, the first of his films to star Divine and Mink Stole. In 1967, he made his first 16-mm film with Eat Your Makeup, the story of a deranged governess and her lover who kidnap fashion models and force them to model themselves to death. Mondo Trasho, Waters' first feature length film, was completed in 1969 despite the fact that the production ground to a halt when the director and two actors were arrested for "participating in a misdemeanor, to wit: indecent exposure." In 1970, Waters completed what he described as his first "celluloid atrocity," Multiple Maniacs.

    Laura Horak Tracing the History of Trans and Gender Variant Filmmakers Abstract Most writing on transgender cinema focuses on representations of trans people, rather than works made by trans people. This article surveys the history of trans and gender variant people creating audiovisual media from the beginning of cinema through today. From the professional gender impersonators of the stage who crossed into film during the medium’s first decades to self- identified transvestite and transsexual filmmakers, like Ed Wood and Christine Jorgensen of the mid-twentieth century, to the enormous upsurge in trans filmmaking of the 1990s, this article explores the rich and complex history of trans and gender variant filmmaking.     CUJAH MENU ‘I’M SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL I CAN’T STAND IT MYSELF’: Female Trouble, Glamorous Abjection, and Divine’s Transgressive Performance Paisley V. Sim Emerging from the economically depressed and culturally barren suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland in the early 1960s, director John Waters realizes flms that bridge a fascination with high and low culture – delving into the putrid realities of trash. Beginning with short experimental flms Hag in a Black Leather Jacket (1964), Roman Candles (1966), and Eat Your Makeup (1968), the early flms of John Waters showcase the licentious, violent, debased and erotic imagination of a small community of self-identifed degenerates – the Dreamlanders. Working with a nominal budget and resources, Waters wrote, directed and produced flms to expose the fetid underbelly of abject American identities. His style came into full force in the early 1970s with his ‘Trash Trio’: Multiple Maniacs (1970), Pink Flamingos (1972), and Female Trouble (1974). At the heart of Waters’ cinematic achievements was his creation, muse, and star: Divine.1 Divine was “’created’ in the late sixties – by the King of Sleaze John Waters and Ugly-Expert [makeup artist] Van Smith – as the epitome of excess and vulgari- ty”2. Early performances presented audiences with a “vividly intricate web of shame, defance, abjection, trauma, glamour, and divinity that is responsible for the profoundly moving quality of Divine as a persona.”3 This persona and the garish aesthetic cultivated by Van Smith aforded Waters an ideal performative vehicle to explore a world of trash. Despite being met with a mix of critical condemnation and aversion which relegated these flms to the extreme periph- ery of the art world, this trio of flms laid the foundation for the cinematic body of work Waters went on to fesh out in the coming four decades.

[01:00:36] MALE : We were so excited about it and thrilled that we had accomplished it. DENNIS DERMODY : We thought this is it. This is the one that Divine has been working towards.
