Gibert There have been very few large-scale studies of Sophocles’ poetic interactions with the other playwrights of the fifth century B.C. This project seeks to fill that gap by putting Sophocles in contact with both tragic and comic poets and offering new readings of his work from that angle. By examining Sophocles as an exploiter of other poets’ dramatic ideas and strategies, I hope to demonstrate his versatility and creativity; by viewing him as a source of inspiration for other dramatists, I aim to show his relevance and significance within his own time. The ancient Life of Sophocles claims that he was nicknamed melitta (“honeybee”) for his ability to glean the best elements from the work of other poets and integrate them effectively into his own plays. Taking this idea as my starting point, I explore the “immediate dramatic context” of each of Sophocles’ late tragedies (Electra, Philoctetes, and Oedipus at Colonus) to show how they draw extensively on specific plays of Aeschylus and Euripides. I also aim to complicate common views of dramatic intertextuality, which, in light of the competitions at the festivals, is often understood in terms of simple imitation or rejection; in particular, the relationship between Sophocles and Euripides has frequently been reduced to one of polemics and polarity. My interest is rather in a type of engagement that was basically collaborative and constructive, and I argue that Sophocles and Euripides, as a result of working closely with each other’s material iv over the course of several decades, were actually much more similar in terms of style and interest than is usually recognized. Finally, drawing on recent work on comic intertextuality, I argue that all fifth-century playwrights were essentially honeybees in their own right, eager to experiment with recent innovations and developments in the theater. Sophocles thus becomes the basis for a more general model of dramatic inspiration and composition in the late fifth century: in contrast to the view that tragedy was becoming exhausted or even dying out, the poets continued to find new ways to exploit, expand, and build on each other’s material.     Citations in Classics and Ancient History The most common style in use in the field of Classical Studies is the author-date style, also known as Chicago 2, but MLA is also quite common and perfectly acceptable. Quick guides for each of MLA and Chicago 2 are readily available as PDF downloads. The Chicago Manual of Style Online offers a guide on their web-page: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html The Modern Language Association (MLA) does not, but many educational institutions post an MLA guide for free access. While a specific citation style should be followed carefully, none take into account the specific practices of Classical Studies. They are all (Chicago, MLA and others) perfectly suitable for citing most resources, but should not be followed for citing ancient Greek and Latin primary source material, including primary sources in translation. Citing Primary Sources: Every ancient text has its own unique system for locating content by numbers. For example, Homer's Iliad is divided into 24 Books (what we might now call chapters) and the lines of each Book are numbered from line 1. Herodotus' Histories is divided into nine Books and each of these Books is divided into Chapters and each chapter into line numbers. The purpose of such a system is that the Iliad, or any primary source, can be cited in any language and from any publication and always refer to the same passage. That is why we do not cite Herodotus page 66. Page 66 in what publication, in what edition? Very early in your textbook, Apodexis Historia, a passage from Herodotus is reproduced.

    The Silence of the Shuttle: The Voiceless Procne and the Absent Philomela in Aristophanes’ Birds In the Birds, Aristophanes creates an odd, jarring sequel to Sophocles’ Tereus through the figures of Tereus and Procne: Procne and Tereus are living together among the birds as a happily reunited couple; their dead son Itys is only mentioned as a figure to be mourned; and the other events that made up the plot of Sophocles’ now fragmentary tragedy—Tereus’ rape of Procne’s sister Philomela, Procne’s subsequent murder of her own son—are not mentioned at all. Procne, furthermore, never speaks, and Philomela is completely absent, her name not even appearing in Aristophanes’ comedy. In this paper, I argue that, through Procne’s voicelessness and Philomela’s conspicuous absence, Aristophanes sets up Procne as a double for her sister, and this doubling is emblematic of the larger narrowing of women’s roles in the comic utopia of the Birds. Procne is also a double in one other, important respect: Although she is introduced as Tereus’ wife, the details given about her costuming indicate that she is costumed as a prostitute—an auletris, more specifically—and Tereus seems unconcerned with presenting her as an object of sexual fantasy to the other male birds. Thus, she occupies the roles of both a wife and a prostitute. This telescoping of female roles is part of the atmosphere of sexual freedom that Peisetairos and Euelpides hope for when they go to live among the birds; Euelpides hopes to live in a city where another man will scold him for not fondling his beautiful young son while leaving the gymnasium (Birds 137-142), and they find in Tereus a man who invites them to “play” (παίζωμεν, 660) with his beautiful and scantily clad wife.

PICHUGINA The article analyzes the descriptions of warriors in Aeschylus’s tragedy Seven against Thebes that are given in the “shield scene” and determines the pedagogical dimension of this tragedy. Aeschylus pays special attention to the decoration of the shields of the com- manders who attacked Thebes, relying on two different ways of dec- orating the shields that Homer describes in The Iliad. According to George Henry Chase’s terminology, in Homer, Achilles’ shield can be called “a decorative” shield, and Agamemnon’s shield is referred to as “a terrible” shield. Aeschylus turns the description of the shield decoration of the commanders attacking Thebes into a core element of the plot in Seven against Thebes, maximizing the connection be- tween the image on the shield and the shield-bearer. He created an elaborate system of “terrible” and “decorative” shields (Aesch. Sept. 375-676), as well as of the shields that cannot be categorized as “ter- rible” and “decorative” (Aesch. Sept. 19; 43; 91; 100; 160). The analysis of this system made it possible to put forward and prove three hypothetical assumptions: 1) In Aeschylus, Eteocles demands from the Thebans to win or die, focusing on the fact that the city cre- ated a special educational space for them and raised them as shield- bearers.
