The last real 911

Like all 911 enthusiasts, I was somewhat apprehensive when the 993 came out, its internal name taken from the year of its launch: 1993. It’s true the first reactions were mixed. The direction taken for the styling of this new generation was the source of some disappointment. Even the most diehard Porsche fans had their doubts about the 993. It nonetheless allowed the company to attract new customers and get its sales back on track. Today, it enjoys unanimous approval in every respect: for its performance, its handling and its looks!

I remember falling in love with the 993 at the Paris Motor Show in 1994. The light green 993 Targa with matching alloy wheels displayed on Porsche’s stand immediately won me over. Little did I imagine at the time that one day I would be lucky enough to own a 993. Now, I have five of them in my garage. In 2013, my passion for the model prompted me to create the 93–64 Club, exclusively devoted to the 993 and 964, which share very similar engines.

To my mind, the 993 is a fantastic car, which takes the pleasure of driving to the highest level and represents a real therapy when times are hard. The 993 of my dreams would be a 993 Targa finished in Horizon Blue (a colour available on the 964) with the wider rear wheelarches from the Carrera S, the air intakes in the rear wings from the Turbo S and the 300bhp X51 engine mated to the short-ratio gearbox. It would be fitted with the exhaust tailpipes from the RS, a trip computer, sports with body-coloured backrest shells, aluminium-painted instrument dials, special Provence Blue leather trim and the Porsche Exclusive GPS console.

As you delve into this book, dear reader, you will discover every last detail of the Type 993 Porsche 911.

With a passion for all things 911 …

Yours truly,

Hervé Daudé

50.0-51.8 CHAPTER 5 5.1 PART 69 Detailed presentation CAREER IN 6MOTORSPORT

Like any good sports car, the 993, the fourth generation 911, enjoyed an intense career in competition that started when the Cup version of the model was presented. This was designed for single-make races, a tradition which had begun with the 944 Turbo Cup in 1986. The 993’s career stepped up a notch in 1995 with the introduction of the Carrera RS Clubsport, an evolution of the Cup version, and the arrival of the RSR and GT2, which were developed to compete in GT championships of all types throughout the world. In a fresh bid to win the , in 1996 Porsche introduced the 911 GT1, which was related to the 993. Finally, the 993 was entered privately in the Targa Tasmania, an Australian rally, and in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
