www.porscheroadandrace.com Tilman Brodbeck remembers Published: 12th January 2018 By: Kieron Fennelly Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/tilman-brodbeck-remembers/ Tilman Brodbeck poses with a 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Coupé (left) and a 911 Sport Classic (right) – 21 September 2009 To be able to write on your résumé that you worked for one of Porsche’s CEOs would be quite an achievement. Tilman Brodbeck can however do a little better than that, for in a 40- year career, he was assistant to no fewer than five successive Porsche presidents. But, as he tells us, he held other posts too. When he started at Zuffenhausen, the company was still ruled by Ferry Porsche, whose nephew and Technical Director Ferdinand Piëch, was literally snapping at his heels. www.porscheroadandrace.com Ferry Porsche www.porscheroadandrace.com Unlike many of his contemporaries who went to Stuttgart University to complete their education, Tilman Brodbeck went further afield, to Darmstadt 100 miles to the north, for his engineering studies: “I wanted to get away from home,” he smiles revealing the slightly nonconformist streak that runs through much of his thinking. His speciality at Darmstadt was in airflow techniques, a subject then very little developed. Tilman’s background meant that after he joined Porsche he was promoted to body project engineer. “One of my tasks was on the 924 (Porsche’s first front engined model) where getting sufficient cooling air to the engine was quite a challenge within the overall shape we wanted for the car.” Prior to this though and before even being assigned a title, Brodbeck had had to prove himself: he was handed the daunting responsibility of resolving the 911’s tendency to lift its front end at high speed.

Schutz, CEO of Porsche from 1981-1987 (ca.1984) www.porscheroadandrace.com Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG this week announced the death of Peter W. Schutz. The former President and CEO of Porsche AG passed away on 29 October 2017 at the age of 87. Schutz is perhaps best remembered for his decision to preserve the iconic 911 sports car. Peter Schutz stands with his wife, Sheila (left), while in front is a white 911 SC 3.0 Cabriolet (MY1983) and a metallic silver 911 Carrera 3.2 Cabrio Turbolook (MY1986) When Peter Schutz took over as President and CEO of Porsche AG in January 1981, the company was experiencing a difficult period, as the company had recorded its first ever losses in 1980. But in just his third week as Porsche CEO, Schutz reversed the company’s earlier decision to cease production of the 911. The car’s success continues to justify this move, as the 911 has been regarded as an iconic vehicle and the ultimate sports car for more than five decades. www.porscheroadandrace.com Standing on the grid ahead of the 1981 Le Mans 24 Hours is, (from L-R): Ferry Porsche, Manfred Jantke, Peter Schutz, Norbert Wagner and Dr Wolfgang Porsche During his tenure, Peter Schutz not only changed the company’s strategic direction. The German-American was also largely responsible for increasing the appeal of Porsche’s range of models, helping to successfully introduce the 911 Cabriolet.

  • JACKY ICKX Porsche
Foreword by JACKY ICKX Porsche Although the first Porsche sports car, the 356, did not appear until after the Second World War, the family involvement in the motor industry dates back to 1898. Ferdinand Porsche's contribution to the development of the Austrian and German industries was considerable, and included important design work on road and sports cars as well as commercial vehicles and highly specialised military engines. Founded in 1931, the Porsche independent design company was responsible for the development of the vastly successful Volkswagen car, and it is a tribute to the man's genius that the car is still in limited production today. The success of the Porsche cars in sports racing events since the war has been considerable, indeed it is probably true to say that their wins over this period have been unequalled. Although known mainly for their exotic sports cars, the Porsche company plays an important part in assisting other manufacturers worldwide, in the design and development of diverse products, both ergonomic and technical. This book traces the fascinating history of the Porsche contribution to the automobile industry, the company's own cars, and their involvement in the world of motor racing. It is a tribute to one of the world's major sports car manufacturers, whose product is a symbol of craftsmanship, precision and quality. • PORSCHE MICHAEL COTTON Designed by PHILIP CLUCAS msiad Produced by TED SMART and DAVID GIBBON Shell CRESCENT BOOKS NEW YORK FOREWORD I am, in all modesty, delighted to be associated with the tribute that this book n Professor Porsche, who in my family has always been looked upon as the Alber automobile engineering.

  • Porsche's 944/951/968
964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet at the 1989 Motor Show, London 964 History by Ken Chambers, PCGB 964 Registry Secretary and Sideways Sid, PCGB 964 Owner That the Porsche 911 is legendary in the world of performance cars is unquestionable. With its distinctive shape and totally individual character the 911 has appealed to driving enthusiasts since its introduction in 1963. In 1989 the first major update resulted in the 964 model in the four-wheel drive Carrera 4 (Built on the experience of the Porsche 959). A year later followed the two-wheel drive Carrera 2. Production of these cars ran from 1989 up until 1993 and the introduction of the 993. During this period some 3,692 were imported into the United Kingdom. Although over 85% of the components had been redesigned, the body style remain faithful to the classic lines of the 911. Improved aerodynamics using knowledge gained from Le Mans winning 959 and 962, reduced the drag coefficient to 0.32, and with virtually zero lift greatly improved stability and road holding at high speed. A retractable rear spoiler automatically extends at 50mph and whilst increasing the downforce also doubles the volume of air intake for improved engine cooling. The spoiler automatically retracts at below 60 mph. The capacity of the famous flat six engine increased to 3.6 Litres. Gained twin spark ignition and become the most powerful normally aspirated 911 production engine with 250 bhp and 310 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm, 0-60 coming up in just over 5 seconds and a top speed of 162 mph Tiptronic Electro-hydraulically controlled 4 speed transmission was as an option for the first time, giving the combination of manual and automatic gear selection being supplemented by immediate up or down gear selection by 'tipping' the gear lever forward or backwards.
