Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place. -
The Porsche Type List
The Porsche Type List When Professor Ferdinand Porsche started his business, the company established a numeric record of projects known as the Type List. As has been reported many times in the past, the list began with Type 7 so that Wanderer-Werke AG did not realize they were the company’s first customer. Of course, as a result, Porsche’s famous car, the 356 as defined on the Type List, was actually Porsche’s 350th design project. In reviewing the Porsche Type List enclosed on this website, you might notice several interesting aspects. First, although there is a strong chronological alignment of Type numbers, it is certainly not perfect. No official explanation exists as to why this occurs. It is possible that Type numbers were originally treated only as an informal configuration and data management tool and today’s rigorous examination of Porsche history is but an aberration of 20/20 hindsight. Secondly, you might also notice that there were variations on Type List numbers that were probably made rather spontaneously. For example, consider the Type 60 with its many “K” variations to designate different body styles. Also consider how the Type 356 was initially a tube frame chassis then changed to a sheet metal chassis with the annotation 356/2 but the /2 later reused to describe different body/engine offerings. Then there were the variants on the 356 annotated as 356 SL, 356A, 356B, and 356C designations and in parallel there were the 356 T1 through 356 T7 designations. Not to mention, of course, the trademark infringement threat that caused the Type 901 to be externally re-designated as the 911. -

newsroom History Jun 1, 2019 One of a kind: the Boxster Bergspyder Years ago, a Porsche development team designed the prototype of a new edition of the legendary Bergspyder. The study, based on the 981 Boxster generation, did not pass the feasibility test in the end. Here, Porsche Newsroom tells the story. Porsche engineers constantly use prototypes to test the lightweight construction potential of the current generations of sports cars. A car especially predestined for this treatment was the Boxster, an open-top two-seater and the lightweight model among the series production vehicles from Zuffenhausen. In 2015, the Executive Board commissioned a project group from Weissach to build a sports car based on the 981, that was to be as light and minimalist as possible. The prototype was to have an even more radical and uncompromising design than the brand new Boxster Spyder in order to achieve an exceptional power-to-weight ratio with associated superior driving dynamics. The legendary Porsche 909, with its ready-to-drive weight of 384 kg — the lightest racing car ever used by Porsche — was built with similar specifications almost 50 years before. For the engineers, the name for the project was obvious: 981 Bergspyder. Deciding on the choice of colour was also quick: white with green touches. As with the Porsche hillclimb racing cars from the late 1960s, there was only a flat, transparent wind deflector which extended around the driver and ended at the doors. -

newsroom Scene and Passion Jan 14, 2020 Project 356/930 After thirty-one years in Australia, Viktor Grahser returned to his native Austria with one suitcase and three 356s. Eleven years after Grahser died, one 356 Roadster has now been completely restored. And has found a distinguished owner. The year is 1996. The place is an inn in the village of Klein-Neusiedl, population nine hundred, around twenty-five kilometers southeast of the Austrian capital of Vienna. Viktor Grahser sits alone at a table in the far corner, talking excitedly in English. He has ordered stuffed crêpes, like he does every Friday. Three years ago he returned to Austria for reasons of the heart. The woman for whom he left his adopted homeland of Australia after thirty-one years is no longer in his life. Grahser, who trained as an aviation mechanic, is fifty-six years old. His features are chiseled; his brown hair is combed back and sticks out over his collar. He’s wearing blue overalls, and his jacket with a Trans-Australia Airlines logo is slung over a chair. A rusted bicycle stands outside the door. Cigarettes lie on the table to his right, and to his left a car magazine that he leafs through while engaging in conversation with himself. Auspicious encounter “Here we go, my friend,” says Grahser, pointing to the heart of his home. Schmied can hardly believe his eyes. A Porsche 356 Speedster stands in the middle of the living room, with just one headlight and no floor or seats. The engine lies behind it, next to a pile of wood. -

Tilman Brodbeck can however do a little better than that, for in a 40- year career, he was assistant to no fewer than five successive Porsche presidents. But, as he tells us, he held other posts too. When he started at Zuffenhausen, the company was still ruled by Ferry Porsche, whose nephew and Technical Director Ferdinand Piëch, was literally snapping at his heels. www.porscheroadandrace.com Ferry Porsche www.porscheroadandrace.com Unlike many of his contemporaries who went to Stuttgart University to complete their education, Tilman Brodbeck went further afield, to Darmstadt 100 miles to the north, for his engineering studies: “I wanted to get away from home,” he smiles revealing the slightly nonconformist streak that runs through much of his thinking. His speciality at Darmstadt was in airflow techniques, a subject then very little developed. Tilman’s background meant that after he joined Porsche he was promoted to body project engineer. “One of my tasks was on the 924 (Porsche’s first front engined model) where getting sufficient cooling air to the engine was quite a challenge within the overall shape we wanted for the car.” Prior to this though and before even being assigned a title, Brodbeck had had to prove himself: he was handed the daunting responsibility of resolving the 911’s tendency to lift its front end at high speed. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 2020 2020 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FIELD MANAGERS EIGHT IL CLUBS TO BE LED BY NEW SKIPPERS THIS SEASON When the International League's 137th season opens on April 9, eight of the circuit’s fourteen teams will have a new manager leading the quest to capture the coveted Governors’ Cup trophy. Only six managers return from the 2019 season, although several of the League’s new field generals bring pre-existing ties to their teams and communities. It is the first time since 2006 that more than half of the circuit’s clubs changed managers during an offseason. The reining IL Manager of the Year Damon Berryhill is the International League’s longest- tenured manager, preparing to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Gwinnett Stripers. Also hoping to get his team back to the postseason is Brady Williams, who took Durham to the finals in his first year with the Bulls in 2019. They will be challenged in the South Division by another returning manager in Norfolk, Gary Kendall. The 2018 IL Manager of the Year, Lehigh Valley’s Gary Jones, will lead the IronPigs once again this season. Like Jones, Brian Esposito in Indianapolis is also at the helm for the third straight campaign. IL Hall of Famer Billy McMillon will manage the Red Sox for the franchise’s final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. Two men have found themselves moving from a coach’s role to the manager’s chair in 2020. Pennsylvania-native Doug Davis (former Syracuse manager) takes over in Scranton/Wilkes- Barre after three seasons coaching, while in Columbus, Ohio-native Andy Tracy is the new manager after helping lead the Clippers to the 2019 Governors’ Cup title as hitting coach. -

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. “Walk Humbly” How’s your ‘walk with the Lord’? One of the most cantankerous managers in baseball history was Earl Weaver of the Baltimore Orioles. He’ll always be remembered for his heated arguments with umpires; but he also got into it with his own players. There was a game in which one of his church-going outfielders named Pat Kelly struck out with the bases loaded; and when Earl Weaver angrily confronted Kelly, the outfielder calmly responded, “ Coach, I hope you walk with the Lord one day” to which Weaver snapped back, “ Pat, I hope you walk with the bases loaded one day!” * You’ve probably heard the phrase “walking with the Lord” – its frequently used to refer to our relationship with God. In Micah 6:8, the prophet was trying to explain to his fellow-Hebrews that God wasn’t nearly as concerned with their offerings & sacrifices as their ability to display three qualities: “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with… God.” - Page 1 of 2 - The phrase ‘walking with God’ (or with ‘the Lord’) only appears about half-a-dozen times in the Bible; and Micah 6:8 is the only time we’re encouraged to “walk humbly with” God. Humility is a quality we’re all supposed to have as God’s children; (but for some of us who’ve been blessed with an ‘over-abundance of self-esteem’, humility remains a continual ‘opportunity for growth’). -

Here's where the core players have been since then and where they are now: Cy Acosta, pitcher. The reliever spent three of his four major league seasons in a White Sox uniform. In 1973, his 18 saves ranked fifth in the league. The same year he became the first American League pitcher to bat in the designated hitter era. The 65- year-old resides in Mexico. Dick Allen, first base. He was the runaway winner in the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player vote, as he had career-highs in RBI (113), bases on balls (99) and on-base percentage (.420). The career .292 hitter played for five teams in15 seasons, after which he served as an advisor and instructor for several years. Now 70 years old, he resides in western Pennsylvania. Luis Alvarado, shortstop. In 1972, the Puerto Rican utilityman took part in a career-high 102 games. Two years earlier, the former International League Most Valuable Player was acquired in the trade that sent shortstop Luis Aparicio to the Boston Red Sox. Died at age 52 on March 20, 2001. Mike Andrews, second base. Also a part of the Aparicio trade, he started 143 games in the 1972 season, his last as an everyday player. One year later, he became the first DH in franchise history.
