Acknowledgements: Authors are thankful to Department of Zoology, Goa University for providing necessary facilities. 10626 Taleigaon plateau butterflies Bowalkar et al. in their respective studies observed a similar pattern of dominance (Kunte 1997; Kunte et al. 1999; Eswaran & Pramod 2005; Dolia et al. 2008; Krishnakumar et al. 2008; Gaude & Janarthanam 2015). Plateaus in Goa are known for their rich floral diversity (Joshi & Janarthanam 2004). In the present study, family Lycaenidae was the second largest family, with 25 butterfly species; Nimbalkar et al. (2011) got similar results. It is known that members of Lycaenidae largely feed on grasses (Nimbalkar et al. 2011) and the vegetation of Taleigao Plateau is also dominated by herbs, shrubs and rough grass species interspersed with trees. At the study site grass species persist from June to late December, hence it could be a good host for the members of the Lycaenidae family. This is followed by the family Hesperiidae with 16 species. This clearly indicates the importance of the plateaus for the members of the family Hesperiidae. This plateau is infested with invasive plant species such as Chromolaena odorata, i.e., known for its high nectar production (Laxmi & Raju 2011) and Lantana camara that flowers throughout the year and is a good source of nectar for butterflies (Day et al. 2003), which could be some of the reasons for the wide assemblage of butterfly species. E-mail: Abstract: Quantification of butterfly diversity and species richness is of prime importance for evaluating the status of protected areas. Permanent line transect counts were used to record species richness and abundance of butterfly communities of different habitat types in Trishna wildlife sanctuary. A total of 1005 individuals representing 59 species in 48 genera belonging to five families were recorded in the present study. Of these, 23 species belonged to the family Nymphalidae and accounted for 38.98% of the total species and 45.20% of the total number of individuals. Mature secondary mixed moist deciduous forest showed the maximum diversity and species richness, while exotic grassland showed minimum diversity and species richness. Out of 59 species, 31 are new records for Tripura state, while 21 are unique species and nine are listed in the threatened category. This study revealed that mature secondary forests are more important for butterfly communities, while exotic grasslands have a negative impact on species composition. The goal of this study is to study the effects of anthropogenic activities on the species diversity of Lepidoptera in three of the main sites on the entrance gate of Kumaoun hills in western Himalayas. The species composition and species diversity of insects varied in all the three study sites showing the effect of temperature and disturbances associated with other ecological and climatic parameters. In the present study a total of 484 individuals belonging to 68 species of 11 families were identified. Among which Pieridae was found to be the most dominant family with 215 individuals and constituting 44.42 % of the total abundance and the most dominant family in terms of species richness having 45 species. Shannon wiener diversity index, abundance and species richness was found to be maximum for the undisturbed site and minimum for the disturbed site. According to Smith et al. (1994), two species are recognized from these areas: Kricogonia lyside (Godart, 1819), the type species of Kricogonia, and Kricogonia cabrerai Ramsden, 1920. Klots (1933) published an excellent generic revision of the family Pieridae in which he illustrated and described the male genitalia of K. lyside, but the relationship of Kricogonia to other pierid genera was not clearly shown.
