    Divine Mercy Sunday SAINT OF THE DAY 19-04-2020 On 22 February 1931 Jesus first communicated to St. Faustina Kowalska His desire for a Feast of Divine Mercy to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter, asking her to announce the extraordinary graces He would bestow. He appeared to her in a white robe with his right hand blessing and his left hand resting on his chest, from which two large rays poured out, one red and the other pale. He ordered her to paint an image depicting what she saw and bearing the inscription: “Jesus I trust in You”. On that same occasion Our Lord made her a solemn promise, valid for every pilgrim soul on earth: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise already on this earth, but especially at the hour of death, victory over enemies. I myself will defend it as My own glory”. Through the revelations to Sister Faustina, Jesus asked priests to announce “My great Mercy for the souls of sinners,” asking every person to invoke His forgiveness with confidence. After 22 February 1931, as proof of how important the Feast of Divine Mercy is in His plan for salvation, he reminded the saint of His request in 14 other apparitions, each time giving new elements on how to celebrate it and why. The choice of the first Sunday after Easter indicates precisely the intimate link between the mystery of the Redemption and this feast, a link that is made even more evident by its novena (“during this novena I will bestow all kinds of graces”, said the Lord), which begins on Good Friday.

    AMDG Second Sunday of Easter Year B 8th April 2018 Divine Mercy Sunday Opening Prayer God of everlasting mercy, who, in the very recurrence of the paschal feast kindle the faith of the people you have made your own, increase, we pray, the grace you have bestowed, that all may grasp and rightly understand in what font they have been washed, by whose Spirit they have been reborn, by whose blood they have been redeemed. Since 2000, at the instigation of Pope John Paul II, the Roman Catholic church has kept the Feast of Divine Mercy on the Sunday after Easter. The readings, however, are still bathed in the joy of the Resurrection. In the First Reading we see the effect the Risen Lord has on the life of the young Christian communities, led and guided by the Apostles. The Psalm joyfully shows that Jesus, through his Resurrection, is the rejected cornerstone first mentioned by Isaiah (Isaiah 28: 16). St John is his letter (Second Reading) reminds his readers that the true believer is the one who loves God by keeping his commandments – that is, by loving one another as he loved us. Jesus, fully man and fully God, was baptised by water but shed his blood for us. In the multi-faceted Gospel text, we encounter the Risen Lord twice, as well as the Holy Spirit and the disbelieving Thomas. We are reminded of Jesus’s patience and infinite mercy; we are also able to witness at first- hand the transformation of Thomas and his deep act of faith as he comes to believe that the Lord is truly risen.

(9) “Faustina, please,” I (Michele) told the cab driver, pointing to a small picture of Jesus hanging from his rearview mirror as my friends and I clambered into the back seat. He nodded. I had traveled to Kraków, Poland, for a weekend trip during my college semester abroad at the Francis- can University of Gaming, Austria. Although I spoke no Polish, the cab driver knew from my request exactly where to take us. He knew I had come to visit the shrine of the great saint Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska. She was 1 2 D IVINE M ERCY FOR M O M S a young Polish religious sister who in the 1930s expe- rienced extraordinary visions of Jesus and his mother. Although Faustina was not very well known in the United States at the time of my visit to Kraków, she was widely celebrated in Poland. Hanging from the cab’s mirror was a distinctive picture known as the Image of Divine Mercy; it was painted at the direction of St. Faustina to portray Jesus as she had seen him in her visions. Devotion to the Image was already very popular among the Polish people and in recent times has surged in popularity in the United States, where the Image hangs in many Catholic homes and parishes, especially on the Sunday after Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday). As the cab driver headed for the Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Kraków-Łagiewniki, the monastery of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy where Faustina had once lived, I tried to soak in as much as I could through the windows.

    aster E April 10, 2020 Message Vol. LX, No. 26 2020 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Alleluia! Let us rejoice in the Risen Lord Jesus Christ! After a Lenten Season and Holy Week like none other in our lifetimes, and though it may not “feel” like it to many, this year’s celebration of Easter should hold even more profound meaning for us. It is with firm conviction of faith and hope, not mere “feeling,” that prompts us to rejoice in the Resurrection of the Lord and look forward to Archbishop Charles our own resurrection. C. Thompson Given the suspension of public Mass and other liturgical celebrations these last several weeks, as well as various parish gatherings and activities, our desire to encounter the empty tomb of our Savior is greatly heightened beyond anything the world can match or satisfy. Hopefully, the measures taken to combat the spread of the coronavirus have intensified our Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving to further enrich our appreciation for all that Jesus endured in his passion and death for our salvation. Taking up our cross has perhaps taken on new meaning for many of us, for it is in times of crisis and challenge that we discover whether we are truly Christ-centered or self-centered. It is in Him, not ourselves, that we are saved. Like those first Apostles to the empty tomb, we may be wondering what this particular Easter experience might mean for us. Unlike those first Apostles, we know the rest of the story. Jesus Christ is alive! Having conquered sin and death, He is Risen! He has won victory for us over all things of this world.

The image of Merciful Jesus is one of the best known images of Christ cru- cified and risen in the history of the Church, and in the contemporary world. It is an extraordinary painting, not only because it is the most wide- spread, but above all because the model, posing for this painting, is the same Lord Jesus who showed himself in these forms to Sister Faustina in the cell of the convent of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy in Płock on the 22nd February of the year 1931, and he ordered to paint his image, according to that vision. This article examines its historical development and evolving appeal, with an eye toward how this nuances our understanding of Catholic devotions in the “age of Vatican II.” The Divine Mercy first gained popularity during World War II and the early Cold War, an anxious era in which many Catholic devotions flourished. The Holy Office prohibited the active promotion of the Divine Mercy devotion in 1958, owing to a number of theological concerns. While often linked with the decline of Catholic devotional life generally, the Second Vatican Council helped set the stage for the eventual rehabilitation of the Divine Mercy devotion. The 1958 prohibition was finally lifted in 1978, and the Divine Mercy devotion has since gained a massive following around the world, benefiting in particular from the enthusiastic endorsement of Pope John Paul II. The testimonies of devotees reveal how the devotion’s appeal has changed over time. Originally understood as a method for escaping the torments of hell or purgatory, the devotion developed into a miraculous means to preserve life and, more recently, a therapeutic tool for various forms of malaise.
