DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Acts 2: 42-47

They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple area and to breaking bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. Assembly: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 118: 2-4, 13-15, 22-24 Chrysogonus Waddell

R. “His mercy endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord say, The stone that the builders rejected “His mercy endures forever.” R. has become the cornerstone. By the Lord has this been done, I was thrust down, thrust down and a marvel in our eyes. falling, but the Lord was my helper. This is the day the Lord has made; The Lord is my strength and my song; let us rejoice in it and be glad. R.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Second Reading 1 Peter 1: 3-9

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, as you attain the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. Assembly: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Mode VI

V. You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord; blessed are they who have not seen me, but still believe!

Gospel Dialogue

Deacon: The Lord be with you. Assembly: And with your spirit.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Gospel John 20: 19-31

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. Assembly: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(All bow while saying) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

9

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Closing Hymn Jesus Christ Is Ris’n Today EASTER HYMN

Postlude Allegro on ‘Engelberg’ (from Sonata No. 5, Op. 159) Charles Villiers Stanford

“A new creation comes to life and grows as Christ’s new body takes on flesh and blood. The universe restored and whole will sing: Alleluia!”

16

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Sacred Music Notes

Stanford’s Allegretto (2nd movement) and Allegro (final movement) on ‘Engelberg’ comes from his fifth organ sonata, Op. 159. It is a setting of his own hymn-tune, whose text affirms, “We know that Christ is raised and dies no more. Embraced by death he broke its fearful hold; and our despair he turned to blazing joy. Alleluia!” The second stanza continues, “We share by water in his saving death. Reborn we share with him an Easter life as living members of a living Christ. Alleluia!” Especially throughout Easter, we are reminded of our Baptism. It serves to tie the dying and rising of the faithful in the waters of Baptism to the dying and rising of Christ; we thereby share in Christ’s victory over sin and death. “Renew the living springs of your grace within us and grant that by this water we may be defended from all ills of spirit and body, and so approach you with hearts made clean and worthy to receive your salvation.”

Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was born into a musical family. His father was a cellist and his mother was a skilled pianist. His parents gave him musical instruction in piano, organ, violin and composition. He later studied with the noted German composers Carl Reinecke and Friedrich Keil. His first position was as organist of Trinity College, Cambridge. At the age of 29, he became one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music, a position he retained for the rest of his life. In 1887, he was also appointed the professor of music at Cambridge University. Among his students were Herbert Howells, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Prayer to Our Lady, Health of the Sick

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.

You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas— we who are put to the test— and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
