Consentia Itinera: an Interactive and Immersive Story of the Identity of the City of Cosenza DAVIDE PANTILE , ETT S.p.a., Genoa, Italy FRANCESCO PELLEGRINI, Attilio e Elena Giuliani Foundation, Rome, Italy The Consentia Itinera Multimedia Museum, funded by the Fondazione Attilio e Elena Giuliani Onlus, reveals the story behind archaeology, events, symbols, landscape, artistic heritage and personalities that have characterized the history of Cosenza, in Southern Italy a part of ancient Magna Graecia, and a “crossroads ” of Big History. The museum is located in the austere and elegant Villa Rendano, built in 1887 by Domenico Rendano, and the inauguration was held in November 2017. The layout offers an interactive route winding through the entire second floor of the Villa, focusing on specific episodes and people, with an immersive and multimedia fit-out including virtual reality and holographic projections on circular walls. These tell the story of Cosenza, from its origins until modern times. Original images, virtual reconstructions, texts and voices form a storytelling experience, accessible to all visitors, in which classical authors such as Pliny, Euripides and Ovid combine with virtual reality to give bird ’s eye views, and walks in the lanes of the city. Among the episodes are stories about the sack of Rome and the treasure of Alarico, that according to a legend is buried in Cosenza, the transformations of the city caused by earthquakes, epidemics and invasions, the Renaissance, the Risorgimento and the unity of Italy. The story of the twentieth century is told in an environment reproducing a cinema of the early years of the century but equipped with chairs and virtual reality devices. -

We prove the existence of large-scale gravitational phenomena of the Crotone Basin, a forearc basin located on the Ionian side of Calabria (southern Italy), by seismic, morpho-bathymetric and well data. Our study reveals that the Crotone Megalandslide started moving between Late Zanclean and Early Piacenzian and was triggered by a contractional tectonic event leading to the basin inversion. Seaward gliding of the megalandslide continued until roughly Late Gelasian, and then resumed since Middle Pleistocene with a modest rate. Interestingly, the onshore part of the basin does not show a gravity-driven deformation comparable to that observed in the marine area, and this peculiar evidence allows some speculations on the origin of the megalandslide. Kilometer- to tens of km-scale submarine gravitational collapses, here referred to as megalandslides, consist of land movements involving up to 1 km (or even more) thick sedimentary successions sliding on a basal surface that may classify as ‘basal overpressured shale detachment’ or ‘salt detachment’1. Gravity gliding may be instanta- neous, associated with mass wasting and shallow detachment, or slow, in connection with a deep detachment and long-term geological processes such as high sedimentation rates or uplif in adjacent areas1. -

Ronzitti: Gulf of Taranto IS THE GULF OF TARANTO AN HISTORIC BAY?* Natalino Ronzitti** I. INTRODUCTION Italy's shores bordering the Ionian Sea, particularly the seg ment joining Cape Spartivento to Cape Santa Maria di Leuca, form a coastline which is deeply indented and cut into. The Gulf of Taranto is the major indentation along the Ionian coast. The line joining the two points of the entrance of the Gulf (Alice Point Cape Santa Maria di Leuca) is approximately sixty nautical miles in length. At its mid-point, the line joining Alice Point to Cape Santa Maria di Leuca is approximately sixty-three nautical miles from the innermost low-water line of the Gulf of Taranto coast. The Gulf of Taranto is a juridical bay because it meets the semi circular test set up by Article 7(2) of the 1958 Geneva Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone. 1 Indeed, the waters embodied by the Gulf cover an area larger than that of the semi circle whose diameter is the line Alice Point-Cape Santa Maria di Leuca (the line joining the mouth of the Gulf). On April 26, 1977, Italy enacted a Decree causing straight baselines to be drawn along the coastline of the Italian Peninsula.2 A straight baseline, about sixty nautical miles long, was drawn along the entrance of the Gulf of Taranto between Cape Santa Maria di Leuca and Alice Point. The 1977 Decree justified the drawing of such a line by proclaiming the Gulf of Taranto an historic bay.3 The Decree, however, did not specify the grounds upon which the Gulf of Taranto was declared an historic bay. -

Stock Assessment Form Demersal species Reference year: 2012 Reporting year: 2013 P. longirostris represents one of the most important resources of the demersal assemblage in the Ionian sea where it is distributed between 100 and 500 m depth and targeted mainly by trawlers. A first stock assessment of this species in the area has been performed in 2013, during the EWG 13- 09, using different sources of data (fishery dependent and fishery independent). Given the results from this analysis, the stock is in overfishing and it is necessary to consider a reduction of the fishing mortality. Here the evaluation is expanded to an exercise using the ALADYM simulation model to explore effects of possible different management scenarios. Dalmazzo 11, 12100 Cuneo, Italia *E-mail dell’Autore per la corrispondenza: [email protected] RIASSUNTO - Qualità del principale corso d’acqua della Calabria (Fiume Crati), valutata mediante le comunità di diatomee - Il Fiume Crati costituisce il corso d’acqua più importante della Calabria. Oltre a rappresentare la principale risorsa irrigua e industriale della regione è rilevante per le attività ricreative che vi si svolgono e per i numerosi scarichi di origine antropica che vi si riversano. Nonostante il D. Lgs. 152/99 e la Dir. CE 2000/60 prevedano l’introduzione di vari metodi biologici per il monitoraggio dei corpi idrici, sono pochi gli studi condotti in tal senso sulla qualità del Fiume Crati. Nel corso del 2004 è stata eseguita una campagna di campionamento al fine di caratterizzare il corso d’acqua dal punto di vista delle diatomee bentoniche e della sua qualità biologica. Il rinvenimento complessivo di 115 specie attesta un’elevata biodiversità di diatomee, ma se si tiene conto del valore indicatore delle specie applicando l’Indice EPI-D di Dell’Uomo le considerazioni a cui si giunge sono diverse. Soltanto il tratto montano del Crati e quello in chiusura di bacino dell’affluente Busento sono risultati di qualità discreta, mentre tutto il tratto medio-in- feriore appare piuttosto alterato. -

I am sure that all attending athletes, who will join Catanzaro as well as all managers, judges and stewards will find a way to explore and appreciate our beauties and taste Calabria people’s hospitality and of all those who have made all efforts for the organization of this sport fishing important event. I am particularly delighted to express my warmest welcoming to all in the aim to live together some happy days in the name of sport. A special “good luck” to all Judges convened to manage this race, in the certainty of their professional and fair commitment they have also expressed in precedent occasions. Legends State That Reggio Calabria Was Founded by Aschenez, a Great Grandchild of Noah and That Many Jews Emigrated to Calabria
JEWISH ROOTS in CALABRIA (Italy) by Prof. Francesco Gallo Legends state that Reggio Calabria was founded by Aschenez, a great grandchild of Noah and that many Jews emigrated to Calabria (thus, starting the ―Jewish Diaspora‖) after Roman Emperor Titus (30-81 AD), during the Jewish- Roman War in 70 AD, captured, sacked and destroyed Jerusalem and its Temple (see photo below). The Old Temple of Jerusalem as it was before its destruction in 70 AD When Titus destroyed the Temple, he also looted all precious works of art and metals as can be seen on the relief sculptures of Rome‘s Arch of Titus (see photo below) 1 This treasure, was brought from Jerusalem to Rome that Alaric (370-410), King of Visigoths, occupied in 410 AD and on his way to Africa, he passed by Cosenza where he died from malaria. His body and the treasure are believed to been buried under the bed of where the Busento and Crati Rivers meet (see photo below). Other legends mention that it was the Hellenized Jews from Egypt who introduced the citrus fruit etrog (―cedro‖ in Italian for ―cedar‖) in Calabria before the Magna Graecia thirteen centuries BC. In fact, the prized etrog, known as the Diamante Citron, also known as the "Yanover Etrog‖, is still grown in Calabria today (see photo below of rabbis selecting perfect cedars). The Calabrian town of ―Santa Maria del Cedro‖ still features their etrog heritage in its place name. It is believed by some Jews, especially the Chabad-Lubavitch, that Moses (1391-1271 BC) used a Calabrian etrog during the first holiday of Sukkot (―Feast of the Tabernacle‖ or ―Festa della Capanna‖) which celebrates the Jewish exodus from Egypt. -

[email protected], [email protected], Abstract For at least five hundred years, the majestic grange of St. Anne in Montauro (CZ) has been overlooking the wonderful gulf of Squillace, placed at the core of Calabrian Ionic Coast. Masonry ramparts size (more than 7 metres high and 1,60 wide at the basis) together with the massive presence of four angular towers immediately hit even an inattentive beholder. Unfortunately, the predominant presence of grange results damaged by a clearly visible crack outline, which turned a great part of surrounding wall into a perpendicular heap of huge masonry portions. They appear disconnected and sheer, so that some panel systems are already collapsed on the north-east side of the building, included many internal constructions such as the church. The serious damage is not only due to repeated seismic events of high magnitude, that systematically run over this zone of Calabria. This article will describe in detail the methodologies and techniques of its making safe, considering the seismic and geological risk of the zone. Within such a framework, airborne remote sensing tools have demonstrated to be powerful instruments, whose joint use can provide meaningful analyses to support the risk assessment of urban environments. Based on this rationale, in this study, the operational benefits obtained by combining airborne LiDAR and hyperspectral measurements are shown.
