Steve Hayden Mail Bid Sale #46 Closing April 22nd 2018 Lot Description Grade Comments/Estimate Civil War Patriotic Tokens 1 - 1/359 b R8 PCGS MS64 30% Bright with a thin planchet crack visible at 12 o'clock on reverse only. 1863 Turban Head Not One Cent struck in Brass. These Zinc tokens were formerly listed as Lead with the "g" designation but it has been determined the Zinc is a more appropriate classification. Aside from a few New York City merchants most Zinc tokens were struck for collectors and did not hold up well in storage often developing a white layer of corrosion; this is a happy exception. 1863 Turban Head IOU 1 Cent struck in Zinc what used to be called Lead. The sixth example we have seen offered. From the Robert Williams collection. (200-300) 3 - 3/373 b R6 NGC AU55 1863 The Union For Ever struck in Brass by Koehler of Baltimore. Two very scarce dies, nicer than the Raw AU Details example that brought $443 in our December 2017 sale. From the Robert Williams collection. (400-500) 4 - 7A/317 a R3 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red. (200-300) 16 - 45/350 a R2 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red with usual late die state for this die combination with the obverse die overly polished or lapped resulting in loss of details. Obverse weakly struck as usual on this combination. Scarce variety particularly this nice. From my May 2004 auction where it brought $27.51. (50-75) 17 - 51/334 a R1 NGC MS64 RD 90% Red. Very rare die in the Patriotic series, only used on this and the Copper variety of the same die combination and though it is called R8, it is also likely a R9. From the Mark Glazer collection and so noted on the NGC holder. Picture on page of the current Patriotic book. (6000-8000) 21 - 57/467 a R7 NGC MS63 RB 30% Red with very nice cartwheel luster. The Federal Government, A National Currency, Free Trade and Human Rights 1862. From the Mark Glazer and Jack Detwiler collections, the Glazer pedigree is so noted on the NGC holder though called 57/473 in error.
