Steve Hayden Mail Bid Sale #46 Closing April 22nd 2018 Lot Description Grade Comments/Estimate Civil War Patriotic Tokens 1 - 1/359 b R8 PCGS MS64 30% Bright with a thin planchet crack visible at 12 o'clock on reverse only. 1863 Turban Head Not One Cent struck in Brass. From the Dave Bowers collection. Data: 20°, 46.1 grains, 19.5 mm. (200-300) 2 - 1/391 z R8 NGC MS62 1863 IOU 1 Cent struck in Zinc. These Zinc tokens were formerly listed as Lead with the "g" designation but it has been determined the Zinc is a more appropriate classification. Aside from a few New York City merchants most Zinc tokens were struck for collectors and did not hold up well in storage often developing a white layer of corrosion; this is a happy exception. 1863 Turban Head IOU 1 Cent struck in Zinc what used to be called Lead. The sixth example we have seen offered. From the Robert Williams collection. (200-300) 3 - 3/373 b R6 NGC AU55 1863 The Union For Ever struck in Brass by Koehler of Baltimore. Two very scarce dies, nicer than the Raw AU Details example that brought $443 in our December 2017 sale. From the Robert Williams collection. (400-500) 4 - 7A/317 a R3 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red. Typical worn die state. 1863 Army & Navy. Rare this nice. (100-150) 5 - 9/406 a R6 PCGS AU55 1863 Turban Head Proclaim Liberty Through Out The Land with odd fellows three chain links. Very scarce Indiana Primitive reverse die only used in this variety, rare this nice. From the Dave Bowers collection. Data: 42.8 grains, 19.3 mm. (400-500) 6 - 11/298 a R1 PCGS MS64 BN Trace Red. 1863 Army & Navy. From the Dave Bowers and Steve Tanenbaum collections from Leslie Heilbronner 1973. Data: 19 mm. (75-100) 7 - 17/388 a R2 NGC MS64 BN Trace Red and nicely toned. 1863 Millions For Defense Not One Cent For Tribute. From the Mark Glazer collection purchased from Eagle Eye. (100-150) 8 - 18/337 a R6 NGC MS63 RB Trace Red mostly on the reverse with usual large obverse die crack. 1863 Our Navy. Rare in Uncirculated condition, we sold a Raw MS62 for $110 in our July 2009 sale. From Eagle Eye. (150-200) 9 - 23/306 a R2 NGC MS63 BN 1863 Army & Navy. (50-75) 10 - 23/306 b R5 NGC MS63 Toned, struck from worn and rusted dies as usual. 1863 Army & Navy struck in Brass. Very scarce variety rarely seen this nice. (100-150) 11 - 23/306 j R8 NGC MS63 60% Bright, struck from worn and rusted dies as usual. 1863 Army & Navy struck in German Silver. Rare variety, the first we have offered in one of our sales. (300-400) 12 - 30A/277A b R10 NGC VF35 1863 Childs Liberty Head Union 1861 with Childs Eagle struck in Brass. Two Unique dies in the Patriotic series. From the Mark Glazer and Larkin Wilson collections, the Glazer pedigree is so noted on the NGC holder. (4000-6000) 13 - 35/265 a R4 NGC XF45 BN Union 1864. (25-50) 14 - 35/265 a R4 NGC AU55 BN Union 1864. Very scarce this nice. (50-75) 15 - 43/387 a R4 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red or more. 1863 Millions For Defense Not One Cent For Tribute signed by maker Louis Leichtweis. Scarce reverse, tiny stars instead of Beaver, a slightly more Red Raw MS63 sold for $220 in our August 2015 sale. From the Steve Tanner collection. (200-300) 16 - 45/350 a R2 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red with usual late die state for this die combination with the obverse die overly polished or lapped resulting in loss of details. Obverse weakly struck as usual on this combination. Scarce variety particularly this nice. From my May 2004 auction where it brought $27.51. (50-75) 17 - 51/334 a R1 NGC MS64 RD 90% Red. Indian Princess Our Army. Unusual with the Full Red designation. From the Robert Williams collection. (150-200) 18 - 51/334 d R7 NGC MS65 Trace Bright all on the reverse with attractive toning. Our Army struck in Copper Nickel. We sold a brighter NGC MS64 example in our March 2008 sale for $495. From the Ken Bauer collection. (400-500) 19 - 54/430 a R3 NGC MS64 RB 20% Red more so on the reverse. From worn and rusted reverse die as usual. Penny Saved Is A Penny Earned. Very scarce this nice. (100-150) 020 034 035 20 - 57/185 do R9 NGC MS62 Struck over an 1859 Indian Head Cent with much detail plainly visible. 1862 Indian Head with Bull reverse struck in Copper Nickel over a US Cent. Very rare die in the Patriotic series, only used on this and the Copper variety of the same die combination and though it is called R8, it is also likely a R9. From the Mark Glazer collection and so noted on the NGC holder. Picture on page of the current Patriotic book. (6000-8000) 21 - 57/467 a R7 NGC MS63 RB 30% Red with very nice cartwheel luster. The Federal Government, A National Currency, Free Trade and Human Rights 1862. Two rare and underrated dies, just the fifth example of this variety we have seen offered and not included in the Tanenbaum collection. An EF+ sold for $1,020.54 in our November 2004 sale. From the Mark Glazer and Jack Detwiler collections, the Glazer pedigree is so noted on the NGC holder though called 57/473 in error.

  • GLOSSARY of PLATING TERMS Acid Gold: a Mildly Acidic Process That Is Used When Plating from 7 to 200 Mils of Gold
GLOSSARY OF PLATING TERMS Acid gold: A mildly acidic process that is used when plating from 7 to 200 mils of gold. The deposits are usually 23kt purity, and it is not usually used as the final finish. Antique: A process which involves the application of a dark top coating over bronze or silver. This coating, either plated or painted, is partially removed to expose some of the underlying metal. Anti-tarnish: A protective coating that provides minimal tarnish protection for a low cost. Barrel plating: A type of mass finishing that takes place in a barrel or tub. Barrel plating is usually requested for very small pieces where pricing must be kept low. Black nickel: A bright or matte, dark plating process that is used to highlight antique finishes. Or, when used as a final color it will range from dark grey to light black. A bright black nickel will yield the darkest color. Bright finish: A high luster, smooth finish. CASS testing: The Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray test is the same as the Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) test, except it is accelerated, with typical time cycles being 8 and 24 hours. Cold nickel: A non-brightened nickel bath which replicates the original finish, that is, bright areas remain bright and dull areas remain dull. Color: Describes the final top coating (flash) which could be white, silver, 14kt gold (Hamilton), 18kt gold, or 24kt gold (English gold). See "gold flash" and "cyanide gold." Copper: An excellent undercoat in the plating process. Copper provides good conductivity and forms an excellent protective barrier between the base metal and the plate.
