One of the rarest types of Civil War tokens and a specialty of Patriotic token collector Mark Glazer who assembled the largest collection of these by far. These are normally thought to be the work of idle hands at the manufacturer. A token was struck uniface against another blank planchet or smooth surface then flipped over and struck again in the same manner. This usually results in the side first struck being somewhat squashed or distorted as on this example. They can also result from an odd set of striking errors which would normally result in the same type of appearance. We sold a NGC XF45 example of the equally rare 87/87 in our July 2014 sale that realized $1,485 in spirited bidding. From the Mark Glazer collection and so noted on the NGC holder. Likely struck on a filed down US Copper Nickel Cent with file marks visible on and near rims, though no undertype is visible. Our Army / Our Navy struck in Copper Nickel. A somewhat underrated variety. From the Robert Williams collection. (300-400) 152 - 425/425 a R9 NGC MS64 BN 10% Red. Single Die Doubleheader. 1863 within wreath Single Die Doubleheader. One of the rarest types of Civil War tokens. Very rare die in the Patriotic series. We sold an NGC XF45 example of the equally rare but of a much more common die 87 in our July 2014 sale that realized $1,485 in spirited bidding. From the Mark Glazer and Larkin Wilson collections, the Glazer pedigree is so noted on the NGC holder. (2000-3000)

A raw VF+ example of the -1b variety sold for $1,000 in our December 2016 sale. Union C 1863 with Eureka Good For 10. Two rare dies particularly the reverse. Very rarely seen above VF and many have some sort of problem, mainly stray counterstamps. We sold a similar raw piece in our August 2015 auction which realized $450. From the Tampa and Steve Tanenbaum collections. (1000-1500) 154 - 444/452A b R9 NGC AU50 BN An arrangement of fruit surrounded by stars while the reverse features 10 CENTS also surrounded by stars struck in Brass. The only use of die 452A in the Patriotic series and quite rare. The plate for this die in the current Fuld Patriotic book is actually a picture of store card. The picture was borrowed from plates used in Fuld's Store Card book as close study of the two will indicate. When we last offered this example nearly 20 years ago it caused quite a stir and brought $7,001 with spirited bidding in our April 2000 auction. Another example or two have turned up since, so it likely will not bring that much but it is still the finest know. From the Mark Glazer, Larkin Wilson and George Fuld collections, the Glazer pedigree is so noted on the NGC holder. (3000-4000)

Merchant Tokens 512 - MILLER NY 59 NGC MS64 PL Proof Like. American Museum P. T. Barnum Proprietor New York with building and bust of Barnum and list of attractions, Admission To The Whole Only 25 Cents struck in White Metal. This die combination has been included in the Civil War Store Card book as a possible Civil War Token based on an April 1862 auction appearance though there is currently no proof it was not struck before the War. We sold a Raw MS63 PL White Metal example for $750 in our August 2015 auction. Rulau NY-NY 11. From the James McClure collection. (1000-1500) 513 - MILLER NY 474A NGC MS65 RB 40% Red more so on the obverse. Loder & Co. 130 Broadway, New York struck in Copper with Plain edge. We have yet to see the two address mules listed by Adams, Miller and Rulau as NY 474 and NY 475, these listings are likely in error. This example is called NY 478 by NGC and should have an "&" rather than "AND"; this is likely an erroneous duplicate listing. From the James McClure collection. (200-300) 514 - MILLER NY 815 NGC MS62 20% Bright. Jas. S. Smith & Co. Military Goods, New York with a military hat struck in Silvered Brass with Plain edge.
