May 2015 About Pigs Pigs are highly intelligent, social animals, displaying elaborate maternal, communicative, and affiliative behavior. Wild and feral pigs inhabit wide tracts of the southern and mid-western United States, where they thrive in a variety of habitats. They form matriarchal social groups, sleep in communal nests, and maintain close family bonds into adulthood. Science has helped shed light on the depths of the remarkable cognitive abilities of pigs, and fosters a greater appreciation for these often maligned and misunderstood animals. Background Pigs—also called swine or hogs—belong to the Suidae family1 and along with cattle, sheep, goats, camels, deer, giraffes, and hippopotamuses, are part of the order Artiodactyla, or even-toed ungulates.2 Domesticated pigs are descendants of the wild boar (Sus scrofa),3,4 which originally ranged through North Africa, Asia and Europe.5 Pigs were first domesticated approximately 9,000 years ago.6 The wild boar became extinct in Britain in the 17th century as a result of hunting and habitat destruction, but they have since been reintroduced.7,8 Feral pigs (domesticated animals who have returned to a wild state) are now found worldwide in temperate and tropical regions such as Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia and on island nations, 9 such as Hawaii.10 True wild pigs are not native to the New World.11 When Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba in 1493, he brought the first domestic pigs—pigs who subsequently spread throughout the Spanish West Indies (Caribbean).12 In 1539, Spanish explorers brought pigs to the mainland when they settled in Florida. -

Usually, educators must find this information and assemble pictures of skulls and skins from various sources. They also must ensure that what they find is relevant and accurate. Buying skulls and skins to represent all Texas mammals is costly. Most educators cannot afford them, and if they can, maintaining these collections over time is problematic. This study resource will reduce the time teachers across the state need to spend searching for information and allow them more time for presenting the material to their students. This identification guide gives teachers and students easy access to information that is accurate and valuable for learning to identify Texas mammals. -

Sezione archeologica Firenze - 1980 Ringraziamenti Il rilievo e lo studio del sito di Vitozza fa parte di una serie di ricerche sugli insediamenti rupestri, condotte e sviluppate da vari anni, nel quadro di un più generale interessamento per le sedi umane abbandonate della Toscana, dall'Insegnamento di Archeologia Medievale dell'Università di Siena, tenuto dal prof. Riccardo Francovich. I materiali ceramici raccolti a Vitozza sono stati studiati dal prof. Riccardo Francovich e dal dott. Sauro Gelichi, ai quali vanno i ringraziamenti per i chiarimenti avuti sul metodo di ricerca e sui problemi di datazione. Un primo risultato di questa ricerca è stato presentato al Convegno Internazionale “ Per una storia delle dimore rurali. Cuneo 8-9 dicembre 1979 ”, nella comunicazione collettiva: L'edilizia rurale minore della Toscana attraverso la documentazione materiale. Agli atti di tale Convegno, che saranno pubblicati da “ Archeologia Medievale ”, VII (1980), si rimanda per una più esauriente analisi del materiale ceramico. The long fibroelastic penis lacks a prominent glans and is coiled at its free end to form two and one-half turns. Near the tight coils of the penis, on the right ventrolateral aspect, lies a V-shaped ventral process. The scrotum is prominent, unpigmented, and devoid of hair and is attached close to the body, high in the perineal region. The ovoid, obliquely oriented testes carry a large cauda and caput epididymis. Accessory genital glands consist of paired, lobulated, club-shaped vesic ular glands, and a pair of ovoid bulbourethral glands. A well-defined prostate gland was not observed on the surface of the pelvic urethra. Many features of the male genital organs of T. javanicus are pleisomorphic, being retained from suiod ancestors of the Artiodactyla. Ri- lievi di formazione geologica più antica (termine meridionale della Dorsale Medio-Toscana, Colline di Montepescali-Batignano, Monti dell’Uccellina) - dalla morfologia aspra e dominati da formazioni boschive (cerrete, leccete, macchia mediterranea, sugherete), rilievi più addolciti (nella restante parte collinare dell’ambito) - in cui il bosco si contrae a vantaggio di coltivi e pascoli, caratterizzano l’ampia compagine collinare. Il sistema insediativo della collina si struttura lungo la Valle del fiume Ombrone (borghi fortificati medievali, lo- calizzati in posizione strategica - sulla sommità o a mezza costa - e sviluppati lungo i percorsi collinari) e sulle Colline dell’Albegna (nuclei compatti medievali - rocche, edifici religiosi, castelli e borghi - arroccati sulle sommità dei versanti e lungo la viabilità di crinale). Qui i nuclei, spesso di impianto medievale - collocati in posizione dominante, dalla morfologia compatta, non di rado murati (Pereta, Magliano, Montiano, Pari, Casale di Pari, Cinigiano, Civitella Marittima, Sasso d’Ombrone, Campagnatico, Batignano), hanno visto salvaguardati i rapporti originari con l’intorno coltivato.
