Anthropology of Indigenous Australia Class code ANTH-UA 9037 Instructor Details Petronella Vaarzon-Morel [email protected] 0428633216 (mobile) Office Hour: Tuesday 5-6pm Class Details Anthropology of Indigenous Australia Tuesdays, 2-5pm September 3 to December 10 Room 3.04 NYU Sydney Academic Centre Science House: 157 Gloucester Street, The Rocks Prerequisites None Class Description This course offers an introduction to some of the classical and current issues in the anthropology of Indigenous Australia. The role of anthropology in the representation and governance of Indigenous life is itself an important subject for anthropological inquiry, considering that Indigenous people of Australia have long been the objects of interest and imagination by outsiders for their cultural formulations of kinship, ritual, art, gender, and politics. These representations—in feature films about them (such as Rabbit-Proof Fence and Australia), New Age Literature (such as Mutant Message Down Under), or museum exhibitions (such as in the Museum of Sydney or the Australian Museum)—are now also in dialogue with Indigenous forms of cultural production, in genres as diverse as film, television, drama, dance, and archiving. The course will explore how Aboriginal people have struggled to reproduce themselves and their traditions on their own terms, asserting their right to forms of cultural autonomy and self-determination. Through the examination of ethnographic texts, historical accounts, films, live performances, and an autobiography, we will consider the ways in which Aboriginalities are being challenged and constructed in contemporary Australia. The course will consist of lectures interspersed with discussions, student presentations, and films/other media; we may also have guest presenters. -

ISBN-10: 0-9876055-0-X ISBN-13: 978-0-9876055-0-4 Aboriginal Camps and “Villages” in Southeast Queensland Tim O’Rourke University of Queensland In the early nineteenth century, European accounts of Southeast Queensland occasionally refer to larger Aboriginal camps as “villages”. Predominantly in coastal locations, the reported clusters of well-thatched domical structures had the appearance of permanent settlements. Elsewhere in the early contact period, and across geographically diverse regions of the continent, Aboriginal camps with certain morphological and architectural characteristics were labelled “villages” by European explorers and settlers. In the Encyclopaedia of Australian Architecture, Paul Memmott’s entry on Aboriginal architecture includes a description of semi- permanent camps under the subheading “Village architecture.” This paper analyses the relatively sparse archival records of nineteenth century Aboriginal camps and settlement patterns along the coastal edge of Southeast Queensland. These data are compared with the settlement patterns of Aboriginal groups in northeastern Queensland, also characterized by semi-sedentary campsites, but where later and different contact histories yield a more comprehensive picture of the built environment. -

Aware of horrendous histories of Aboriginal murder, dispossession and pitying understanding at the hands of settlers, writers are worried about the effects of raced representation; and are always concerned to identify those texts which might be labelled racist. In order to make such a search meaningful, though, it is necessary to take as axiomatic certain propositions about the functioning of films: that they 'mean' in particular and stable ways, for example; and that sophisticated reading strategies can fully account for the possible ways a film interacts with audiences. -

Introduction to Noel Pearson Dean Parkin, National Museum of Australia 17 March 2021 Aunty Jude, I want to thank you for your very warm welcome to country, I pay my respects to you, your elders past and present, and I bring greetings from my people, the Quandamooka people from Minjerribah or North Stradbroke Island as you may know it, just off the coast of Brisbane. Thank you Mat for the introduction. As mentioned, my name is Dean Parkin and I am the Director of From the Heart, a campaign for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice enshrined in the Constitution. I want to thank you all for attending tonight, particularly those who have travelled a long way to be here. It is my role to introduce Guugu Yimithirr man Noel Pearson who many of you know well and Vicki Morta, a Ngadjon-jii woman, who will both speak about the importance of a constitutionally- enshrined Voice. In the midst of the flurry of the campaign, I’ve been doing a lot of personal reflection recently. I turned 40 last week and there’s nothing like a birthday with a zero in it to consider one’s own mortality. Part of this is a normal human contemplation of one’s own life and death. But that does not explain the burning, prickling feeling I had when thinking about the next three to four decades of work ahead. You see, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people think of time across generations – what we experience now is part of a continuum from what has gone before and what has yet to come. -

Marriageability and Indigenous Representation in the White Mainstream Media in Australia PhD Thesis 2007 Andrew King BA (Hons) Supervisor: Associate Professor Alan McKee Creative Industries, Queensland University of Technology Abstract By means of a historical analysis of representations, this thesis argues that an increasing sexualisation of Indigenous personalities in popular culture contributes to the reconciliation of non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australia. It considers how sexualised images and narratives of Indigenous people, as they are produced across a range of film, television, advertising, sport and pornographic texts, are connected to a broader politics of liberty and justice in the present postmodern and postcolonial context. By addressing this objective the thesis will identify and evaluate the significance of ‘banal’ or everyday representations of Aboriginal sexuality, which may range from advertising images of kissing, television soap episodes of weddings, sultry film romances through to more evocatively oiled-up representations of the pin- up-calendar variety.
