Dissertation presented to the Faculty of Arts of the University of Glasgow in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Glasgow March 1996 Page 2 Abstract Academic work on Aboriginality in popular media has, understandably, been largely written in defensive registers. Aware of horrendous histories of Aboriginal murder, dispossession and pitying understanding at the hands of settlers, writers are worried about the effects of raced representation; and are always concerned to identify those texts which might be labelled racist. In order to make such a search meaningful, though, it is necessary to take as axiomatic certain propositions about the functioning of films: that they 'mean' in particular and stable ways, for example; and that sophisticated reading strategies can fully account for the possible ways a film interacts with audiences. -

Marriageability and Indigenous Representation in the White Mainstream Media in Australia PhD Thesis 2007 Andrew King BA (Hons) Supervisor: Associate Professor Alan McKee Creative Industries, Queensland University of Technology Abstract By means of a historical analysis of representations, this thesis argues that an increasing sexualisation of Indigenous personalities in popular culture contributes to the reconciliation of non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australia. It considers how sexualised images and narratives of Indigenous people, as they are produced across a range of film, television, advertising, sport and pornographic texts, are connected to a broader politics of liberty and justice in the present postmodern and postcolonial context. By addressing this objective the thesis will identify and evaluate the significance of ‘banal’ or everyday representations of Aboriginal sexuality, which may range from advertising images of kissing, television soap episodes of weddings, sultry film romances through to more evocatively oiled-up representations of the pin- up-calendar variety. A history of the media strategy of the Aboriginal Land Right, Black Power and Self-Determination Movement By Professor Gary Foley and Dr Edwina Howell Author Bios Professor Gary Foley, actor, activist and academic historian, was a key member of the Aboriginal Black Power movement and was a critical figure in establishing the Aboriginal Tent Embassy of 1972. He has been at the centre of major political activities in Australia for more than 40 years and has worked at Victoria University, Australia since 2008. Dr Edwina Howell completed her PhD on the activist strategies of the Black Power movement in 2013. Two of her most recent co-edited publications are The Aboriginal Tent Embassy: Sovereignty, Black Power, Land Rights and the State and the reference monograph by Barrie Dexter, Pandora’s Box: The Council for Aboriginal Affairs 1967-1976. She has worked at Victoria University since 2010. Introduction Aboriginal activists involved in the Black Power, land rights and self-determination movement in the late 1960s and 1970s in Australia sought to create the conditions under which Aboriginal people could determine their own futures. This meant the upending of almost 200 years of colonial oppression as well as breaking through a culture of white-supremacy, a culture conditioned by what the anthropologist William Stanner famously coined as ‘the Great Australian Silence’ which was regarded many Aboriginal people as a systematic process of conscious and violent forgetting. Referred to interchangeably as the land-rights, self-determination or Black Power movement, the force of Aboriginal activism emerging in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Australia consisted primarily of a loose coalition of collectives in in the urban centres of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. -

Jimmy Chi: Hybridity and Healing Introduction Jimmy Chi is the scion of a well-known and respected Broome family, a family whose fortunes fluctuated with the vicissitudes of Broome‟s history. Jimmy Chi‟s Chinese grandfather, John Chi, was a successful pearler who had arrived in Australia as a cabin boy around 1872; his Japanese grandmother, Yaie John Chi, was a businesswoman who operated a long soup shop and boarding house. His Scottish grandfather was a pastoralist, his Aboriginal grandmother a traditional Baad woman who witnessed the arrival of the Europeans in the Kimberley. His father, James Minero Chi, owned various businesses in Broome including a successful taxi service and the first postal service along the corrugated pindan road to Beagle Bay and Cape Leveque. His mother, Lily, was a member of the Stolen Generations who was raised in the Beagle Bay mission and in Broome by the St John of God nuns. As a young woman she worked as a domestic for the manager of the Bank of N.S.W. Being a devout Catholic she worked for the Catholic Church throughout her life, starting up the Bishop Raible Co-op, now the Op Shop, with her friend Rosie Lee, getting „the money together by making cakes, and cooking at the races and other things‟ (Chi, J. 2005, pers. comm., May 24). The extended Chi family exemplify the innovative attitude of people on the frontier who were prepared to take risks and embrace challenge. -
