Queensland Labor recognises that the Quandamooka people are the traditional owners of North Stradbroke Island and have occupied the lands and waters of Moreton Bay and the Quandamooka people's inalienable right to possession, occupation, use and enjoyment of their native title land on North Stradbroke Island. The Labor Opposition voted against the Newman Government's North Stradbroke Island Protection and Sustainability and Another Act Amendment Bill 2013 which is one of the grossest abuses of the Parliament and democratic process in Queensland's history. This bill contained Sibelco branded maps of mining lease areas in the legislation, was drafted in accordance with a briefing note provided by Sibelco to the Newman Government with each and every demand met, and was defended using an economic analysis produced entirely by Sibelco, that was branded as that of the department of State Development Infrastructure and Planning. This legislation followed $91,840 in electoral support being provided by Sibelco to the Premier in his seat of Ashgrove at the 2012 election, which Sibelco had initially failed to declare to the Electoral Commission of Queensland. The LNP made no mention of legislation to allow for the extension of sand mining to 2035 before the 2012 State election and had no mandate to introduce that legislation. The Quandamooka people were treated extremely poorly by the Newman Government and were not even consulted prior to this legislation being introduced into Parliament. Queensland Labor will act to immediately repeal the disgraceful North Stradbroke Island Protection and Sustainability and Another Act Amendment Act 2013. Queensland Labor also commits to early and close consultation with the Quandamooka people on any future decision relating to the management of mining leases on North Stradbroke Island. To reinforce Labor's commitment to transitioning the economy of North Stradbroke Island from sand mining, we will also commit up to $20 million over five years towards a North Stradbroke Island Economic Transition strategy. I am deeply concerned to hear about the lack of basic clean water, sewerage and waste management infrastructure for Quandamooka families at One Mile. However, the funding of this infrastructure is a responsibility of the Redland City Council. If elected Queensland Labor will meet with the Council to resolve how these unacceptable living conditions can be addressed. Queensland Labor also acknowledges that the joint management arrangements for the Naree Budjong Djarra National Park have been poorly managed by the Newman Government. Queensland Labor will also commit funding to ensure that joint management arrangements for Naree Budjong Djarra National Park are delivered in accordance with the Indigenous Management Agreement into the future, including the existing joint manger position. The Queensland Opposition acknowledges that the hand-back of land at One Mile was an outcome of an ILUA between the Quandamooka People and the Government of Queensland. If elected, a future Labor Government will review the ILUA which is not publically available and meet with the Quandamooka People and Redland City Council to work through the complexities of the infrastructure requirements at One Mile. We have been subsequently advised that it is not the responsibility of Redland City Council to provide the infrastructure for One Mile under the ILUA negotiated in 2011 by the Queensland Government and, if elected, we commit to working with Council and the Quandamooka People to resolve this issue.     Report on: Erosion at Cloherty’s Peninsular, Moreton Island 1.0 Introduction This report has been prepared by the Coastal Management Unit of Environment Planning for Moreton Bay Marine Park Operations to assess the coastal processes affecting the eastern shoreline of Cloherty’s Peninsular, Moreton Island. Erosion of this beach has exposed a disused landfill site on a reserve (Lot 51 on SL8794) located east of the Kooringal Township. The purpose of this assessment is to investigate channel migration and other coastal processes that may be contributing to erosion of the subject beach. The assessment will assess the likely rate of erosion over the short to medium term and provide some advice on the likely long term prospects for this beach. 2.0 Site Description The study site is the eastern beach of Cloherty’s Peninsular, Moreton Island between Mirapool to the north and Reeders Point to the south (refer Figure 1). This beach has a south-easterly aspect and is exposed to waves from the east to north-east sector. The site is protected from the prevailing south-easterly waves by North Stradbroke Island. The site is influenced by the tidal channels within South Passage, the entrance to Moreton Bay between North Stradbroke and Moreton Islands. South Passage is influenced by two main channels, the Rous and Rainbow Channels. The more dominate Rainbow Channel has a north-south orientation and runs along the western foreshore of North Stradbroke Island and along the eastern foreshore of Moreton Island. The Rous Channel is orientated roughly in an east-west direction and joins the Rainbow Channel approximately halfway between Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Southern Queensland ePrints [2005] ANZLH E-Journal Traditional law and Indigenous Resistance at Moreton Bay 1842-1855 LIBBY CONNORS* On the morning of 5 January 1855 when the British settlers of Moreton Bay publicly executed the Dalla-Djindubari man, Dundalli, they made sure that every member of the Brisbane town police was on duty alongside a detachment of native police under their British officer, Lieutenant Irving. Dundalli had been kept in chains and in solitary for the seven months of his confinement in Brisbane Gaol. Clearly the British, including the judge who condemned him, Sir Roger Therry, were in awe of him. The authorities insisted that these precautions were necessary because they feared escape or rescue by his people, a large number of whom had gathered in the scrub opposite the gaol to witness the hanging. Of the ten public executions in Brisbane between 1839 and 1859, including six of Indigenous men, none had excited this much interest from both the European and Indigenous communities.1 British satisfaction over Dundalli’s death is all the more puzzling when the evidence concerning his involvement in the murders for which he was condemned is examined. Dundalli was accused of the murders of Mary Shannon and her employer the pastoralist Andrew Gregor in October 1846, the sawyer William Waller in September 1847 and wounding with intent the lay missionary John Hausmann in 1845. In the first two cases the only witnesses were Mary Shannon’s five year old daughter and a “half- caste” boy living with Gregor whose age was uncertain but described as about ten or eleven years old.

    NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND HISTORICAL MUSEUM ASSOCIATION INC. ANNUAL REPORT 15th September 2017 It is my pleasure to present the Annual Report for 2016/2017. The major milestone and event for the year was our 30th Anniversary celebration on 13th May with a community function at the Museum and the running of two big raffles. I thank all the generous donors to those raffles and to all the ticket buyers. We also thank Bernadette Ryan for her great work in arranging all the Raffle prizes and making the raffles so exciting. The function and the Raffles were very successful fund raisers and we will be carefully considering the special uses we put the money toward. As part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations, the Museum collected artwork from every Dunwich State School Class inspired by the Museum Collection, and I am sure everybody enjoyed them posted all over the Museum at the student’s discretion. Long serving Management Committee Members Margaret Nash and Barbara Smith will not be standing for re-election this year. Margaret as Treasurer and Barbara as Secretary and Display convener have for many years given invaluable service to the Museum. We wish them well in their retirement. On behalf of the Museum I want to express our appreciation of the work all the volunteers contributed through the year. And both Lisa and Elisabeth who contribute far more time and effort than we could ever pay them for. Lisa and Elisabeth have both been granted valuable Research Awards this year. Elisabeth is being funded to do research at the Queensland Maritime Museum and Lisa has been granted a Fellowship with the Queensland State Library.

Predominantly in coastal locations, the reported clusters of well-thatched domical structures had the appearance of permanent settlements. Elsewhere in the early contact period, and across geographically diverse regions of the continent, Aboriginal camps with certain morphological and architectural characteristics were labelled “villages” by European explorers and settlers. In the Encyclopaedia of Australian Architecture, Paul Memmott’s entry on Aboriginal architecture includes a description of semi- permanent camps under the subheading “Village architecture.” This paper analyses the relatively sparse archival records of nineteenth century Aboriginal camps and settlement patterns along the coastal edge of Southeast Queensland. These data are compared with the settlement patterns of Aboriginal groups in northeastern Queensland, also characterized by semi-sedentary campsites, but where later and different contact histories yield a more comprehensive picture of the built environment.
