AP French Immersion 12 Performance This year, the AP French Immersion 12 class has written an original play entitled “La Chambre". The students all worked extremely hard in class and dedicated many hours outside of school time to write, and edit the play. Now they are very busy rehearsing in order to present their production in December. On December 10th the play will be presented to all Handsworth French Immersion students as well as other elementary and secondary schools. On December 11th, the show will be open to the public at 7:00 pm in the Drama room. Come & support this very keen, enthusiastic, committed and very proud group of French Immersion students! No Regrets Basketball Tournament The storied North Shore Invitational Basketball Tournament, which saw the likes of Steve Nash and Robert Sacré over its 25 years, morphed into the ‘No Regrets’ Tournament in 2015. Under the guidance of the Tournament Committee of the Quinn Keast Foundation, the tournament includes a 16 team boys’ bracket and an 8 team girls’ bracket. For the last 12 years, the QKF has hosted basketball games, built outdoor courts, and awarded scholarships to numerous high school students, all while taking the ‘No Regrets’ approach. The tournament has welcomed teams from Prince Rupert, Calgary, Kamloops, Salmon Arm and in 2018, from Saskatchewan and Sydney, Australia. The ‘No Regrets’ Tournament has a strong community presence and uses its online and social media present to include game stories, photos and commentary. In the four North Shore gyms used by the Tournament there are dance teams, mascots, and pep rallies ensuring that the North Shore is involved and students, parents and the general public are excited about the high level of basketball being represented. And, of course, the QKF presents scholarships rewarding the player recipients for their dedication and passion for their sport. The goal of the ‘No Regrets’ Tournament is to provide a memorable experience for all participants. British Columbia is known for its amazing basketball tournaments, so our goal is to leave the student-athletes with great memories and an eagerness to return the following year, while spreading the mantra of "No Regrets" and its relevance to BC basketball. This simple saying is something that many of us have lived our lives by !2 DECEMBER 2018 over the last decade and truly believe it is a message worth spreading. With terrible losses, like the passing of a great person such as Quinn Keast, comes great motivation to be better. With the inspiration of Quinn's story by our side, the No Regrets Basketball Tournament Committee is both proud and excited to bring this special event to our local gyms for many years to come. We thank everyone that has helped us make our vision for this tournament a reality through sponsoring the events. No Regrets. IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN WHERE OUR HANDSWORTH COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO HELP THOSE IN NEED! Every year, there are families who struggle to make ends meet and the holidays are a very difficult time of year for them. Our Holiday Hampers are Handsworth’s way of contributing to these families’ happiness and well-being during this season. How to help? •Each grade is ‘adopting’ two families, each with similar needs. Please contribute in the form of GIFT CARDS (with amount written on it) and/or NEW ITEMS/TOYS (please refrain from giving used items) to match the needs of the families. How do I know what I should buy for these families? •Each grade is assigned 2 families. Students will receive a list with the items needed for each family. Where does my child hand in the items? •ITEMS/TOYS: Your child will bring in the new item/toy to their BLOCK 5 and place it in a designated box. •GIFT CARDS are much appreciated. Please WRITE THE AMOUNT you’ve donated on the gift card. oWe need this amount on the card in order to equally divide the gifts between each of the 10 families we are helping. oGift cards may be handed in to ANY teacher. It doesn’t have to be your Block 5 teacher. The most important thing is that gift cards are not lost en route so feel free to hand them in at any time. •Students may also choose to place their gifts into bins in front of the office. Place them in your grade’s bin! !4 DECEMBER 2018 FAMILY 1: (Grade 8) GIRL – 9 years old clothing size 12 to 14 and shoe size 2 BOY – 14 years old men’s size large (outerwear and XL) Shoe size men’s 11 Wish List: Crafts for the girl and gift cards for games for Xbox for the boy.
