Northern Nashville Caithness Festival 2006

14th - 16th April, 2006 Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland

SOUVENIR PROGRAMME This Programme may be Subject to Change Chairperson’s Welcome I can't believe that it's Easter Weekend again and time for our third Caithness Country Music Festival. Let's hope we can score a hat trick and put Caithness firmly on the country music map and calendar. This year again the Caithness Indoor Riding Arena is the chosen venue for our event in the main this was given the thumbs up as a successful festival site last year. Hopefully this year we have upgraded and improved on the standard making it even more popular. As you can see this years festival has a truly international flavor with artistes from Canada, America, Switzerland, Holland, and Ireland, sharing the stage with our home grown talent. As usual the committee has worked extremely hard in particular over the last few months when time for ourselves seem to have become something of a luxury. Not forgetting our merry band of dedicated behind-the-scene helpers who work so hard at putting this event together -- we could not do without you - - so sincere thanks to you all. I would also like to say a special thanks to country music writer and presenter Stewart Fenwick who is a great help in promoting the festival. Stewart does some fantastic previews and reviews in the country music magazines. Thanks Stewart it's much appreciated. Have a good one!!! A request for yourselves to help us improve our event and give you the festival goers and most important people what you want in the future. Please take the time to complete and return our feedback questionnaire and we will take your comments and suggestions on board for next year. We aim to please. Have a great weekend. However from the minute they stepped on the stage and played their first song I knew they were going to go down a storm and I was right. The boys themselves had a great night and couldn't believe the hospitality and reception they received, they were most impressed by our club and thought Scotland was a beautiful country. I initially thought we might have problems with the language barrier but once they had sampled some of our local malts this improved which must mean that when the whisky's in we all talk the same language. The band said there are no country music clubs in Switzerland however they do play live gigs and are warmly received all over Europe including France, Austria and Germany. The five piece band play anything from ballads to to . They take you back in time to the smoky dance halls and honky tonks of Texas where you can kick up your heels, clap your hands, two step or waltz, but you are guaranteed to have a great time. The boys write and perform their music in the same traditional but yet unique and original style that is their own. Their lead singer Juan, with his deep clear strong voice, sings along to the accompaniment of four background vocals and instruments such as steel guitar, fiddle, mandolin, dobro guitar, bass and drums. With over fifty live concerts performed annually and nominations for 'Band of the Year' and 'Newcomer of the Year' in both Switzerland and Austria, the Honky Tonk Pickers are on their way to becoming one of the most successful country bands in Europe. Their exceptional musical talent combined with their energetic, enthusiastic interaction with their audience is an experience never to be forgotten. The band was founded in 1997 and has become a well oiled machine that has proven to be a formula for success. The musicians deliver exactly what is needed to fascinate the audience and create the right atmosphere for the event. In 2000 Texas Renegade were voted the most promising country band in Holland after winning a series of talent shows. They have toured Belgium, Spain, Germany and Switzerland as well as their very successful tour of Austin, Texas, and have made appearances at festivals throughout the Netherlands.

The boys played at a Northern Nashville club night last August and put on a brilliant show in their own unique way - feedback from our members was favorable. They were a very visual band who played with enthusiasm and feeling which they believe are the two ingredients for real country music. The band members are very big Dale Watson fans and he guests on their new CD. They were interested to hear the reports and view the photos of Dale when he played at our first festival. Texas Renegade's play list includes songs by country music greats. Mix in their own brand of original roots country and you have an incredible show - in fact to quote the boys they are authentic, serious kick-ass country performers.

Ronnie was born in Ontario sixty nine years ago and raised in Quebec; he spent his first performing years in Montreal and Toronto on the night club circuit. He moved to Florida in 1965 then to Nashville in 1967 he also spent six years working in Las Vegas. Ronnie's wife Glory-Anne was also born in Canada she grew up in Saskatchewan where she started singing at socials and functions at the age of five and later went on to become a full time performer. Ronnie and Glory-Anne started singing together in 1981 romance grew along with their careers and they married in 1986. Ronnie will be best known by country music fans in the UK for being entertainer and compere at the Wembley Festivals for a record seven years during the late seventies and early eighties. During the seventies he had a series of hits including “Sanctuary”, “Shine On” and “Phone Call From Allyson”. After touring with George Jones in 1996 Ronnie went to Branson to work at Box Car Willies theatre during the time Box Car was ill and having treatment. Ronnie fell in love with Branson and, despite living in Nashville for thirty years, decided not to return there. He started his own show in the Pickin Parlor Theatre in Branson in 1998 and for 170 days a year he delights his audience with his quick wit, superb Chet Atkins style instrumental abilities, amazing impressions and of course his singing. Ronnie was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999 in honor of his lifetime success as an international star and performer in country music. That same year Ronnie and Glory-Anne were presented with the Branson Ambassador Award for all their work in promoting Branson and its music. Ronnie works with different charities and has helped raise over 32 million dollars for physically and mentally challenged people. One of his most prized awards has been The Angel award given to him in honor of his work for St Judes Children's Hospital.

Joy is one of the new faces of Country Music who has brought years of experience to Nashville and has been hailed as 'the great unknown goddess of country music'. Joy was born in the small farming town of Turrell, Arkansas but grew up in Mishawaka, Indiana. Her father was a guitar player and the whole family would get together to sing and play music. Joy sang in the church as a child before belting out rock'n roll songs during her teenage years. In the late 80's Joy headed to Nashville in a beat up car with $200 in her pocket where she rapidly made an impact as a backing singer. In 1991 she landed a recording contract, toured here with Ricky Van Shelton and released her debut album “Between Midnight and Hindsight”. This and her future album releases showed Joy Lynn to be a passionate vocalist who has a distinctive voice which can sore with passion, growl with indignation, and burn with desire. To quote Joy “I write songs that have something to say that have a strong point of view and if it's real for me then it's going to be real for whoever is listening”. White has also proved to be a gifted actress she took on her first big dramatic role playing Mother Maybelle Carter in a musical production based on the legendry Carter family. Joy is also a fine songwriter and prefers to write songs that have a message in them probably in the UK one of her best known successes is “Tonight the Heartache's on ME” Joy Lynn White recorded by the Dixie Chicks. Frank is no stranger to Caithness as he has played at both a Northern Nashville club night and at our first festival - both times going down a storm. Born in Steenbergen in Holland in 1964 he grew up with country music and amongst his favourites were Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and Merle Haggard He took guitar lessons and in 1994 made a tape and arrived on the country scene. His first two singles both made it to the number 1 position where they stayed for three months in the European top 100 charts. This resulted in him traveling to the US to record his first album “Your A Phone Call That I Need To Make”. The album was chosen as album of the year in Holland in 1998and earned him four nominations by the European Country Music Association. In 1999 Frank released his second album “My Way Or The Highway”. His self-penned track “If You Ever Need A Fool” was awarded the Dutch country song of that year and the album chosen for album of the year. “Lolene”, his third album, was released in 2002 and contains eight tracks written by Frank. Fairly recently he has recorded an album called “Frank Sings The Songs Of Marty Robbins”. He has played many festivals in Europe and has played on stage with amongst others BRS-49, and Dale Watson. He is a fairly regular visitor to England and has recently been to Scarborough and Blackpool along with his own five piece band I know he will receive a warm welcome back in this county from his many fans. Couper Square • Thurso Tel/Fax: 01847 890940 Other Acts appearing at the Festival include:- Gerry Ford This years event will be expertly compered by Gerry Ford who appears regularly at country festivals around Britain as a compere and entertainer. Gerry will keep the crowd well entertained throughout the band changes with songs from his latest album and some old favorites. Gerry is one of Scotland's most popular country artistes, although he was born in County Westmeath in Ireland. He moved to England in 1959 and a few years later settled in Edinburgh and joined the police force. He was a country music fanatic and became Scotland's leading country music singer songwriter. To date he has recorded 16 albums, 1 in Scotland, 2 in Ireland, 12 in Nashville and his latest in England. He has performed on the Grand Ole Opry 21 times as guest of country legend Jean Shepherd, and also toured with numerous great country stars, plus met and interviewed many more for his radio programmes. Gerry also appeared at the Wembley International Country Festival frequently as both entertainer and compere. Gerry is probably best known for presenting Country Corner on Radio Scotland. This kept us abreast of what was happening on the music scene and Friday nights were never the same when, after 15 years, it came to an end. However since then Gerry has continued to have his own series on Radio 2, and has guested and presented on many more. He continues to win awards and this year was no exception. “Another Chance to Dance” won country single while the CD “One More Time” won the presenters' award for album of the year. Gerry was a regular visitor to Northern Nashville during the 80's and early 90's (and before that in the days of the original club). I'm sure Gerry still has fond memories of great nights in the club and of the committee and members and is no doubt looking forward to coming back to Caithness, meeting lots of old friends, and making new. Shogun Gwenda and the boys from across the water in Orkney our own nearly local band will be joining us this year again at our festival. They need no introduction in these parts and we know how popular they are due to them winning N.N.C.M. Band of the Yearaward twice. The band play a cross section of music - Gwenda belts out some great ballads, but they also keep the dance floor busy with up tempo numbers. There have been lots of rumors and uncertainty from the fans as to the future of Shogun - are they coming of the road or are they parting company? Philip Anderson has become ever increasingly busy in his commitments as a record producer. He is still working from home but does wonder if it is time to spread his wings. His last work was an album of country classics by Gwenda (hopefully they will have some for sale at the festival) released just before Christmas and he is currently recording Kate Bain's latest CD I read an article recently and learned that Philip played in the Scottish band “Middle Of The Road” who had a blockbuster hit many moons ago with “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep”. He also has a gold disc presented for one of his albums he played on with TommyScott. Whatever the future holds for the band we are delighted that they are here with us at the present and we are guaranteed they will put on as tremendous a show as they have done in the past. Manson Grant & The Dynamo’s The Dynamos are a name that has long been associated with the music business in Scotland, Ireland, & the USA. With over 100 awards decorating a glittering career, people from all over the world have been entertained by the Dynamos Manson Grant and the Dynamos, although strongly associated with country music clubs and country music, feature a wide range of music in their repertoire. They are truly a professional outfit and one of the busiest bands on the scene. They play theatres, concert venues, show dances, and marquees, where they feature a selection of rock'n'roll, modern, standard country, and Irish. The band is able to adapt their music and programme to many different styles to suit the event, but their main objective is to keep the dance floor busy and to please the audience. Manson and Robert, along with John Innes of Arcade Travel, arrange country holidays and fan club weekends. This year sees them returning to Benidorm in May and the Skean Dhu Hotel, Aberdeen in November. These events are great value for money and everything runs like clockwork due to the precision planning. After many years of traveling to record their music, Manson and Robert have installed their own recording studio. Their 17th and latest album “Take Me For Who I Am” features mainly cover versions of country songs with a few Scottish thrown in. Manson sings the title track and “End In Tears”, both written by Dave Sheriff, which are particularly great songs. The whole album is excellent and Daniel as usual does a fabulous job of his Marty Robbins number. Stephen Smyth Stephen was born in Portaferry, County Down, Northern Ireland and is one of the newest names on the Irish Country Music scene, and undoubtedly one of the most talented musicians around today. A self-taught musician Stephen made his first appearance at the age of 13 playing lead guitar in a showband and the following year established his own band called Frontline. His big break came at 17 when he was asked to join Philomena Begley's backing band Shotgun. Over the next 8 years he gained great experience from touring extensively throughout Ireland, UK and Europe playing fiddle, lead guitar, steel guitar and backing vocals. Stephen took over fronting Shogun when Philomena cut back touring, and in 1997 he joined the Indians playing saxophone. At the approach of the new millennium he joined The Dominic Kirwan Band & toured the USA, UK and the Caribbean with them. In September 2003 Stephen became the saxophone player in the Declan Nerney Band until he played his first gig as The Stephen Smyth Band in April 2005. Although Stephen has not had his own band for very long he certainly has a wealth of talent and experience with some of Ireland's greats. The band have proved themselves a force to be reckoned with and there's never a dull moment in their show, with material ranging from Merle Haggard to Irish traditional even a touch of Scottish thrown in for good measure. Yes,Stephen is a big man with a big voice and huge talent. The Kate Bain Band At last Kate is getting organised to release her second and long overdue CD. Philip Anderson from Shogun is doing the recording. She has not as yet put on vocals but hopefully this will be done shortly. She has included tracks from Lorrie Morgan, Patty Loveless, Reba Macintyre, Gretchin Wilson and Suzy Bogus. Kate has had quite a dilemma selecting the tracks, trying to find something to suit all tastes, but judging by that line up of great female country singers I'm sure she has succeeded. Her last CD was brilliant - every track a winner - and I know it's still very popular and well played. We now have an answer to the question we are repeatedly asked, “When is Kate making a follow up?” Northern Nashville struck it lucky for our November show. The weather was atrocious and the band we had booked was unable to make it. Kate and the Band were all set to go across and play in Shetland however that was cancelled again due to the elements. They realised our predicament and kindly said they would play for us but there was a slight technical hitch - their instruments had already gone ahead on the boat! However our other local band, Manson Grant and the Dynamos, were also on our bill that night and they rescued the situation by offering the use of their gear to Kate and the boys. Our club could not do without this kind of support and help from our local artistes. Kate, Richard and David continue to support several local charities with their fund raising and provide their services by playing at events free of charge. Kate and the Band are looking forward to playing the festival this year again. They realise the amount of work that goes on in putting on such an event and wish us every success for 2006. Kim Dickinson Liverpool born Kim is now based in Northern Ireland although a relatively newcomer to the country music scene she has a string of awards to her bow. Kim's first album “Smokey Mountain Queen” went to number one on the ECMA charts, her second “This Time” is doing very well, and we look forward to her third release which is due out shortly. Both albums are excellent - she does some standards and cover versions, but also lots of new material and certainly provides a taster of her musical ability. She has also had two number one singles “He's Gone Crazy” & “No Account Man”. She has toured Europe extensively has been part of Tamworth (Irish peace tour) in Australia. Whilst on a visit to Nashville she performed in the well known honky tonk on Music Row Tootsies and played with Billy Jo Spears' drummer who said “Kim is one of the best newcomers I have played with”. She has also played all over Ireland starring alongside some of its biggest country stars; Susan McCann, Philomena Begley, Mary Duff, and Dominic Kirwin, to name but a few. Kim's prestigious awards have included Vocalist of the Year, Best Newcomer ECMA, Horizon Award Winner, Irish Country Music Award Winner 2004 & 2005 - an impressive list. She has made many guest appearances on TV and radio shows all over Ireland and Europe, and has played many festivals. She supports many charities and performs at many fund raising events. These have included Chernobyl Children's Hospital Fund, Guide Dogs for the Blind, & Temple St. Children's hospital. She also recently starred in a very successful theatre tribute show to the Carpenters where she played the lead role as Karen Carpenter. On stage at the festival Kim will be supported by “The Band”. They are excellent performers and musicians in their own rights who will provide first class backing and add their own brand of music to the show. Sharon Turley Sharon Turley hails from the Midlands in Ireland. She has worked and toured with many top country and Irish acts - Foster & Allen and Daniel O'Donnell to name but a few. Sharon fronted her own band for ten years and was a regular visitor to Scotland and England. At present she is doing a one person show and for the most part of 2006 she will be touring the world with 'Enjoy Travel' and working alongside many great artistes. She has four great albums to her credit and has appeared on numerous television shows In recent years Sharon has qualified as a beauty specialist and is thoroughly enjoying the new experience. Sharon was on the bill in Northern Nashville when we held our 10th anniversary club night and, along with another lady from Ireland, Kathy Durkin, they put on a tremendous show and gained many fans. Her love and passion of music is as strong as ever and she can't wait to appear at our festival. It's a pity she hasn't been back before now but I am sure she is sounding as good as ever, and we can expect another great performance from “The Lady with the Hat” as she is commonly known. The Jacks How do you begin to describe The Jacks? They have been around a long time in one form or another. Most people know something about their background, and they certainly helped put the North of Scotland on the international country music map. Geordie and Dado with Colorado traveled around the world performing at major festivals and working with top names in the business. TV appearances, Grand Ole Opry, loads of radio play, a string of albums - including many self-penned songs, awards etc. Kevin and Trevor - both sons of Geordie, and talented musicians, also played on the international festival scene, performing on radio and TV in their own right. They picked up a gold disc after winning television's TSB Rockschool national competition. Collectively, The Jacks have achieved more than most, but that hasn't altered their attitude to the way they make music. They are completely honest in their songs, and totally genuine with their audience, putting on no 'airs & graces'. They enjoy a good laugh, a bit of banter, and a pint or two, and that's why ordinary people can associate with the way The Jacks music captures life's experiences. The Thurso High School Band The line up for this year's festival is Chris Maycock, David Struthers, Gary Dunnett, Jack Macphee, Michael Cragg, Shondie Maclean and Vikki Macleod. The High School band will be playing for us twice during this festival on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Last year the crowd realised that the youngsters were understandably slightly nervous when they came on stage so they supported and encouraged them all the way. The band went down a storm and gave a tremendous performance with lots of proud mums, dads, grannies and aunties watching. This year the band will play a more contemporary set but will include some of the more traditional music. The group are very excited about being asked to play this year again and are looking forward to the show and hopefully meeting some of the bands. They have been working very hard rehearsing (in between studying) under the watchful eye and expertise of Thurso High School guitar instructor and local musician John Newton. During the past year some of last years' High School Band have come along to a couple of our club nights and listened to the bands. This is great for country music in Caithness and it gives us hope and encouragement that perhaps some of these young talented musicians will become our local country bands of the future.
