Contents Dec.indd 1 27/11/09, 10:43:31 am Few artists in Nashville can match Reba McEntire for vocal style or vision. She recently spoke to Richard Kirk for this exclusive Linedancer Magazine interview.

Few singers can match Reba McEntire and her career. She has won an unprecedented seven Association Awards, 15 American Awards, 12 Academy of Country Music Awards and many more including two Grammys. She has also sold over 55 million and had 34 Number one hits.

Her new , ‘Keep On Loving You’,when released in the USA earlier this year shot straight into the Number one slot on both the Billboard Top Country and Top 200 Album charts.

As a singer and artist Reba is very much involved in the songs and choices made. Not for her waiting for managers to make decisions, no siree! She co-produces her records, a rarity for women in any genre of music and has always kept a very keen eye on the ebb and flow of her career and the quality of the songs she chooses. For this new album, Reba made an unusual decision. She chose to work with two producers.

“Different people bring different things to a project. Tony Brown and I have been working together since 1989 andI thought it would be interesting to bring in another producer to see how he would handle different songs. I had chosen 13 songs to record. They were selected from thousands. I gave Tony the ones I thought he would shine on. The others I thought Mark Bright would enhance and put his style on. I think it worked very well. It is basically the same formula I have always used but with a little more edge. The style of instrumentation is a little more contemporary but I also included my more traditional cuts.”

Reba is a complete entertainer and her career on the big screen and television (Tremours, TV series The Gambler and her very own

Chocs Away Hank and Denise and their Line Dance In Cardiff club took a trip to Torquay for a weekend with Charlotte Macari. They had decided to dress for the occasion and were inspired by the advert on TV for Virgin Airways. They told us: “The costumes were handmade and this made it more fun”. As you can see from the picture they done a really good job. They called themselves Virgin Rejects and caused quite a stir at the motorway services and on arrival at the hotel. Every year they dress up for their weekend away and this year even Charlotte Macari joined in as one of the Famous Trolley Dollies. Hank and Denise added: “The ladies ages range from late thirties to 95. ‘B’ is 95 and is still Line dancing and always fi rst in line to dress up and have a good giggle. They sent pictures to Virgin Customer Services who replied saying they were really impressed with the pictures and have put them on their internal website. Two days later a big box of chocolates arrived compliments of Virgin thanking the girls for all their effort and telling them how they had impressed everyone in the company.”

Happy Birthday Frank

Frank of Frank’s Gang from Douglas in the Isle of Man recently celebrated his birthday. He told us: “For my birthday bash I booked Slice The Ice for what turned out to be a brilliant night of Line dancing. Slice The Ice are a duo from Manchester who can both sing and play every style of music imaginable. We danced to the Killers, Rod Stewart, The Four Tops, Van Morrison, The Mavericks, Take That, Keith Urban, Scissor Sisters, etc. They also played a couple of instrumentals to show off some fantastic musicianship. If you want a great dance with a difference check out Slice The Ice I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.”

Grapevine Jan.indd 14 27/11/09, 11:07:18 am Who Goes There? The annual Black & White Mask Ball held by Maureen and Michelle, repeated the success of previous years with scores of dancers attending and all of them keen to participate in the fun theme. The girls told us: “Dancers dressed in a variety of black and white outfi ts, some with feather boas and dickie bows, others in fun black and white costumes, all with masks. The dance fl oor had a mystery element as everyone tried to guess who was behind each mask. A very broad range of Line dances was played ranging from brand new to golden oldies and all types of music were covered. As usual there was a fun, free quiz with numerous prizes.” Maureen & Michelle hold regular socials at The Peace Memorial Hall, Penkridge, Staffs on the second Friday of each month and they are always extremely popular. Watch out for their spectacular Ice Dance Social in December.

A Witch, Who Me?

Dixie Kickers celebrated Halloween with a social at the New Invention Working Mens Victory Club in Willenhall. Denise Nicholls sent in a photo and told us: “In Surfi ng Woolacombe Bay between the pumpkin and the devil we have my son dressed up, although some Halloween night in Woolacombe Bay, Devon was where Val Vella and her Line dance said it was an improvement. I dressed up club the Easy Strollers from Clevedon in Somerset went on a KingsHill Line dance as a witch, some call me that even when weekend. I like the intimacy of Tampa in that you’re always meeting up with people as you meander from room to room. There were excellent vendors this year and people enjoyed checking out their wares as they travelled from class to class.

Dance previews moved along fairly swiftly so dancers didn’t have to sit down too long. The idea is to allow everyone to hear the music and get some idea of the fl ow of the dance so they can choose which class to go to. And again in the evening, there were reviews of the dances

An Event For All Occasions Alan and Barb Heighway of Feel The Beat Line dance club in Telford have been busy organising more successful events. “Our annual coach trip to the seaside was a visit to Llandudno for a weekend’s Line dance party. There were some of our dancers and a group from Wolverhampton. The Saturday night fancy dress theme of Summer Holiday resulted in a big variety of beachwear on display,” they told us. “Even though we had plenty of sunshine, the morning workshops were well supported with Fly Baby Blue, Put A Smile On Your Face and Sail Away which were dances taught for the Holiday theme. We also raised £100 on the raffl e for the Hope House Children’s Hospice which was brilliant.” The next event resulted in the streets of Ketley in Telford being deserted as the Feel The Beat Line dancers arrived for their Halloween Party of the Year wearing their Halloween wear. Alan and Bard added: “The most beautifully dressed witches and ghouls walked down the red carpet for this long anticipated event and our Ketley Hall was suitably decked out with big Black cobwebs, skulls, spiders, snakes and bats to add to the atmosphere. We also raised £50 for Children in need.”

The future of Line dancing is assured as far as he is concerned. “There may be more and people may be more relaxed in their dress but there are now lots of weekend getaways abroad for people who love dancing. So even if there are too many dances and none of them last that long, does it really matter? As long as we have dancers coming every week to learn things and support their clubs and their socials, I don’t think it does.” He embraces the more international dance scene too. “It is fantastic the way so many great dances are written all over the world, the wider Line dance becomes the better for all of us.”

As for his own personal future, he says: “As a DJ I work hard to make sure dancers get the best possible experience and today I enjoy teaching so much. Now then, considering I once said I would never teach who knows what will be next…. I may even end up choreographing a dance!”
