Accredited to ISO 9002 and ISO 9001:2015, Firespray International is committed to the highest standards in products development, manufacture and customer support. Since its formation in the early nineties, Firespray International Ltd has become recognised as a world authority in the design and manufacture of Fire Ducting Systems under the brand name FLAMEBAR. With a primary manufacturing base in the UK, Firespray International Ltd has now developed a highly specialised international Licensees network encompassing the world. This Manual has been produced for everyone associated with the design and installation of fire rated ductwork systems and illustrates how to satisfy the requirements of the regulatory bodies. It also clearly emphasises our own commitment to fire safety. Understanding the European Test Standards EN 1366 series of tests now includes separate fire test methods for Ventilation and Smoke Extraction ducts and further differentiates between single and multi compartment Smoke Extract Systems. These standards are strictly for sizes of rectangular ducts up to 1250 x 1000mm or circular ducts up to 1000mm diameter. BS EN 1366-1 - Fire resistance tests for service installations - Ducts (Ducts for ventilation, pressurisation and kitchen extract). BS EN 1366-5 - Fire resistance tests for service installations - Service Ducts and Shafts (Ducts for cables, pipes and other services). BS EN 1366-8 - Fire resistance tests for service installations - Smoke Extract Ducts (Ducts for multi compartment smoke extract). BS EN 1366-9 - Fire resistance tests for service installations - Single Compartment Smoke Extraction Ducts (Ducts for single compartment smoke extract). For ducts exceeding the above dimensions, the extended field of application standards (EXAPs) tests must be undertaken. These tests depend upon the ducts previously having been tested to the EN 1366 test series. BS EN 15882-1 - Extended application of results from fire resistance tests for service installations - Ducts BS EN 15882-5 - Extended application of results from fire resistance tests for service installations - Smoke Control Ducts These series of tests to achieve ducts 2500 x 1250mm rectangular or 1250mm diameter circular. For sizes greater than the extended field of application standards an individual project specific submission must be presented to the European Organisation for a technical approval Etag. BS EN 1366-1 Fire Resistant Tests for Services Installations Ducts This is primarily the fire test for Ventilation Ducts and Kitchen Extracts, but it is also used as a precursor to the Smoke Extract ducts where fire insulation is required to be demonstrated. The test is conducted without the involvement of fire dampers. It is applicable to vertical and horizontal ducts taking into account joints, air supply and exhaust openings as well as suspension devices and penetration seals. The tested duct assembly is judged against performance criteria. These are; 1. Integrity 2. Smoke Leakage 4 The performance of duct assembly is measured in terms of its ability to withstand exposure to high temperatures by setting criteria by which the resistance of the fire containment (integrity), the thermal transmittance (insulation) functions, together with the leakage rate of the duct can be judged. The standard temperature/time fire exposure is specified in BS EN 1363-1. Direct Field of Application The direct field of application only covers circular and four sided rectangular ducting at this time. Test results achieved for horizontal ducts A (fire outside) and B (fire inside) are applicable to horizontal ducts only. Test results achieved for vertical ducts A (fire outside) and B (fire inside) are applicable to vertical ducts only. The test result obtained for the standard size of ducts A & B is applicable to all dimensions up to the size tested together with the increase as follows: Fire Outside (Duct A) plus 250mm wide, plus 500mm high (for rectangular ducts) plus 200mm diameter (for circular ducts). Fire Inside (Duct B) plus 250mm wide, plus 750mm high (for rectangular ducts) plus 370mm diameter (for circular ducts). This means under the field of direct application, the largest ducts,or f duct A and B will be 1250mm wide x 1000mm high (for rectangular ducting) and 1000mm diameter (for circular ducting). Assessments for larger sizes are not available. BS EN 1366-5 Fire Resistant Tests for Service Ducts & Shafts The European Standard specifies a method of determining the fire resistance of horizontal service ducts and vertical service shafts, which pass through walls or floors and enclosing pipes and cables. The test examines the behaviour of ducts and shafts exposed to fire from outside and inside the duct. BS EN 1366-8 Fire Resistant Tests for Smoke Extraction Ducts This test is applicable to fire resisting ducts that have already passed the appropriate test period to BS EN 1366-1 where the fire outside (duct A) has been tested to a differential pressure of 500 Pa. The smoke extract duct also needs to be tested as fire inside (duct C) BS EN 1366-9 Fire Resistant Test for Single Compartment Smoke Extraction Ducts This part of BS EN 1366 specifies a test method for determining the fire resistance of horizontal extract ducting that are used within single compartment applications only i.e. duct which remains within the compartment of fire origin and exhausts to the exterior of the building without passing through another fire compartment. In such applications the smoke extract system is only intended to function up to storage areas (BS 9999 clause 37.3). Where the smoke extract duct passes through multi fire compartments, then all the duct system including first compartment must be tested to BS EN 1366-8. 5 2. Fire Rated Ductwork Analysis and Performance 2.1 FLAMEBAR BW11 - Single Source Responsibility - Certificate of Conformity 2.2 FLAMEBAR BW11 - Flexibility in Design 2.3 FLAMEBAR BW11 - Construction of Fire Duct 2.4 FLAMEBAR BW11 - System Integrity - Ancillary Components 2.5 FLAMEBAR BW11 - Panel Construction 2.6 FLAMEBAR BW11 - Air Temperatures at Various Distances from Duct 2.7 FLAMEBAR BW11 - Supports and Hangers 2.1 Single Source Responsibility - Certificate of Conformity When considering the use of Fire Resistant Ductwork, issues such as Single Source Responsibility and Certificates of Conformity are often overlooked. When cifyingspe FLAMEBAR BW11 you are assured that every process from design to installation is directly controlled. Single Source Responsibility means exactly what it states, that from design through manufacture, spray coating and installation there is a single source responsibility. Furthermore, once all the installation is complete and all contractual commitments are fulfilled a Certificate of Conformity is issued to the client. This confirms the periods of fire resistance installed and confirms compliance with the relevant criteria of BS EN1366. This document underlines our commitment to providing the best and ultimately most “fire safe” installations available. 2.2 Flexibility in Design FLAMEBAR BW11 offers complete flexibility in design - rectangular, flat oval and circular ducts are available. The construction of the initial galvanised sheet steel duct means that all FLAMEBAR BW11 Fire Ducts have normal standards of air tightness and are therefore easily capable of being successfully tested. As well as profile flexibility as depicted in the previous illustrations, FLAMEBAR BW11 Fire Ducts can also be supplied as detailed below: Four Sided Circular Flat Oval 6 2.3 Construction of Fire Rated Duct FLAMEBAR BW11 Fire Duct is constructed from galvanised sheet steel manufactured to an enhanced standard, then degreased and sprayed with FLAMEBAR BW11 which is specially formulated water based compound. This contains selected mineral fillers in a low permeability elastomeric binder to a thickness of 0.7mm to give a finished product which has been successfully tested for international use under Cellulosic Fire Conditions in excess of 4 hours duration. Ductwork is produced in sections and is assembled on site utilising tested fireproof gaskets/sealants.
