Brief Information of Beijing Beijing, abbreviated“ JING”, is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and the center of the nation's political, cultural and international exchanges. It is a famous city with a long history and splendid culture. Some 500,000 years ago, Peking Man, one of our forefathers, lived in the Zhoukoudian area of Beijing. Mawang Dui 馬王堆 - the Horse King Mound - is an archaeological site located in Changsha, China. It is the site of three tombs belonging to the first Marquis of Dai, his wife, and a male who is believed to be their son. The site was excavated from 1972 to 1974. Most of the artifacts from Mawangdui are displayed at the Hunan Provincial Museum. This discovery was monumental, one of the most significant of the 20th century and has changed our view of the history of medicine and Daoism in China. The tomb contained various medical texts, including depictions of qigong (dao yin) exercises. For our purposes we will mainly focus on these philosophical and medical texts, but the tombs contained political and historical texts as well. the texts. These text were “written to advise ruling Han dynasty authorities on how to attune themselves to the cosmos at a time of rapidly changing political and social climate.” From the sleeve of Yates' Five Lost Classics : “In 1973, among the many unique documents discovered in the richly furnished tomb of a Han-dynasty aristocrat, were five books written on silk, primary texts of Huang-lao Daoism and Yin-yang philosophy that had been lost to mankind for more than 2,000 years. A discovery as important in China as the unearthing of the Dead Sea Scrolls was in the West, the Mawangdui texts created a sensation when they were first published, even leading to the foundation of a new religion on Taiwan… The recovery of the five lost classics sheds new light on a critical transitional period of Chinese political and intellectual history. -

Cindy Fan1 Abstract: The Hui people are a distinct ethnic group in China in terms of their diet and Islamic religion. In this paper, we examine the divergent residential and economic develop- ment of Niujie and Madian, two Hui enclaves in the city of Beijing. Our analysis is based on archival and historical materials, census data, and information collected from recent field work. We show that in addition to social perspectives, geographic factors—location relative to the northward urban expansion of Beijing, and the character of urban administrative geog- raphy in China—are important for understanding the evolution of ethnic enclaves. INTRODUCTION esearch on ethnic enclaves has focused on their residential and economic functions and Ron the social explanations for their existence and persistence. Most studies do not address the role of geography or the evolution of ethnic enclaves, including their decline. In this paper, we examine Niujie and Madian, two Muslim Hui enclaves in Beijing, their his- tory, and recent divergent paths of development. While Niujie continues to thrive as a major residential area of the Hui people in Beijing and as a prominent supplier of Hui foods and services for the entire city, both the Islamic character and the proportion of Hui residents in Madian have declined. We argue that Madian’s location with respect to recent urban expan- sion in Beijing and the administrative geography of the area have contributed to the enclave’s decline. -
The Floating Community of Muslims in the Island City of Guangzhou
Island Studies Journal, 12(2), 2017, pp. 83-96 The floating community of Muslims in the island city of Guangzhou Ping Su Sun Yat-sen University, Zhuhai, China [email protected] ABSTRACT: The paper explores how Guangzhou’s urban density and hub functions have conditioned its cultural dynamics by looking specifically at the city’s Muslim community. Guangzhou’s island spatiality has influenced the development of the city’s Muslim community both historically and in the contemporary era. As a historic island port city, Guangzhou has a long-standing tradition of commerce and foreign trade, which brought to the city the first group of Muslims in China. During the Tang and Song dynasties, a large Muslim community lived in the fanfang of Guangzhou, a residential unit designated by the government for foreigners. Later, in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Hui Muslims from northern China, who were mostly soldiers, joined foreign Muslims in Guangzhou to form an extended community. However, during the Cultural Revolution, Guangzhou’s Muslim community and Islamic culture underwent severe damage. It was not until China’s period of reform and opening-up that the Muslim community in Guangzhou started to revive, thanks to the city’s rapid economic development, especially in foreign trade. This is today a floating community, lacking geographical, racial, ethnic, and national boundaries. This paper argues that Guangzhou’s island spatiality as a major port at the mouth of the Pearl River has given rise to a floating Muslim community. (A 5.88) The (Ahitāya) Thera Sutta (A 5.88) is a vital warning that grounding in right view is imperative especially when we are presenting or representing the Buddha Dharma. The more people respect us, or listen to us, or turn to us for spiritual help, and the more we have the means of mass-propagating our Buddhist views, the more carefully we have to ascertain rightness and moral consequences of our efforts. The point is that status, learning, seniority, fame, wealth, and resources, advantageous as they may be in Buddhist work, are not sufficient standards for truth. While it is true that whatever we express are merely our own opinions, we must have the moral re- sponsibility at least to ensure that such opinions or facts reflect the true Dharma. Much as we have the freedom to publicize the teachings of a particular teacher or group, we must accept the fact that this may not be the only view of the true Dharma. The final test of what we propagate must be Dharma-based. The true teachings always stand above the teacher.1 After the Buddha‘s time, especially as Buddhism grows beyond India, such standards are not always possible, for various reasons. At first, Buddhism appears to change the culture, but in due course it is the culture that changes Buddhism, often turning it into a system vastly different, even contrary to the Dhar- ma of the Buddha. -

All these components were not random and were not caused only by the whim of the architect or customer, but for thousands of years have been regulated by the principles of Feng Shui, the canons of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. That is why every detail of the structure was provided with a particular hidden meaning. However, the spread of wood construction over time led to the emergency state of many small pavilions and gazebos. Chinese researchers pay attention to the poor state of many historical pavilions and gazebos and negative examples of their reconstruction, which distorted the primary structure of the object. Since the authenticity of the architecture is completely lost as a result of such “reconstructions”, the experience of the Ukrainian special research and restoration-design- production corporation Ukrrestavratsiia, obtained on numerous wooden churches and wooden structural elements of buildings for other purposes, can be useful in conservation and restoration of China wooden objects. -

First, it outlines the “standard itineraries” given to Arab delegations touring China both in the 1950s and in the twenty- first century, demonstrating how the changes to this agenda reflect the shifting priorities of the Chinese state. Second, it explores how the Chinese government has refined the vision of Chinese Islam that it presents to visitors from the Middle East, taking into account Beijing’s changing attitude toward expressions of Islamic piety.
