Madonna Biography Madonna Biography Madonna (16 August, 1958 – ) is an American singer, actress, dancer and movie star. She has sold over 300 million records worldwide, making her the best selling female artist of all time. She has had a profound influence on pop culture often courting controversy for upsetting religious and moral sensibilities. Short Bio of Madonna Madonna, born Louis Cicconi, on 16 August 1958, was brought up in Rochester Hills Michigan. Her mother died, from breast cancer, when she was only five; she was brought up by her grandparents. She was raised a Roman Catholic, though from an early age she displayed a rebellious streak. In 1978, she dropped out of college and moved to New York, with barely the clothes she was standing in. She got a job as a waitress at Dunking Donuts, and in her spare time learnt modern dance. She temporarily joined a rock band ‘ The Breakfast Club’ but tried to make a solo career and gaining the favourable impression with Sire Records, she was given a recording contract. In 1982 she released her first single ‘Everybody‘ and in 1983, she launched her first album ‘Madonna‘ It sold very well, but it was her next album ‘Like a Virgin‘ which made her into an international superstar. The album sold over 12 million copies, helped by the hit single ‘Like a Virgin‘ which stayed at number one for 6 weeks. As well as being a successful music recording artist, Madonna was very influential in influencing fashion and attitudes to life. Her trademark looks included fish net stockings, a Christian cross, bleached hair and Capri skirts. Throughout her career, Madonna has courted controversy for her mix of sexuality and religious imagery. Her attitudes sparked criticism from the Vatican and the Vatican discouraged people from attending her concerts because of the eroticism. Madonna, generally, remained unapologetic and continued to perform her routines. “A lot of people are just really confused by me; they don’t know what to think of me, so they try to compartmentalize me or diminish me. Maybe they just feel unsafe. But any time you have an overtly emotional or irrational, negative reaction to something, you’re fearing something that it’s bringing up in you.” – Madonna After forming her own company – Madonna, produced a book titled ‘Sex’. It featured nude photography and was quite controversial, especially in US; but it sold over half a million copies. She has launched several business enterprises, such as fashion lines – Material Girl (1980s) and ‘Truth or Dare by Madonna'(2011) She has acted in a couple of films, without much commercial success – though her appearance in Evita about Eva Peron, the famous Argentinian wife of the President received good reviews. She has now produced over 10 albums and remains a very influential artist still capable of hitting the top of the album charts. According to Billboard magazine, she is second only to the Beatles in terms of all-time best selling artist. Her early Catholic roots influenced her music and videos, but, in the early 1990s she embraced Kabbalah a Jewish mystical sect. In 2004, she adopted the Kabbalah name ‘Esther’ which in Persian means star. Talking about the meaning of Kabbalah, Madonna stated: “That consciousness is everything and that all things begin with a thought. That we are responsible for our own fate, we reap what we sow, we get what we give, we pull in what we put out. I know these things for sure.” – Madonna In recent years, Madonna has continued to tour, release albums and engage in humanitarian work. In 2013, she realised a short film entitled Secretprojectrevolution – launched at the Art for Freedom initiative, which states it is seeking to promote “art and free speech as a means to address persecution and injustice across the globe”. She also supports an organisation ‘Raising Malawi’ a humanitarian organisation co-founded by Madonna and committed to building schools in an effort to end the extreme poverty of Malawi orphans. The relationship between Argentina and the United States was both strained and uncertain at this time. The newly elected Perón and his controversial wife, Eva, represented Argentina. The United States’ presence in Argentina for the preceding year was primarily presented through Ambassador Spruille Braden.2 These men had vastly differing perspectives and visions for Argentina. The contest between them was indicative of the relationship between the two nations. Beneath the public and well-documented contest between Perón and United States under the leadership of Braden and his successors, there was another player whose presence was almost unnoticed. The impact of this player was subtlety effective in normalizing relations between Argentina and the United States. The player in question was former United States President Herbert Hoover, who paid a visit to Argentina and Perón in June of 1946. This paper will attempt to describe the nature of Argentine-United States relations in mid-1946. Hoover’s mission and insights will be examined. In addition, the impact of his visit will be assessed in light of unfolding events and the subsequent historiography. The most interesting aspect of the historiography is the marked absence of this episode in studies of Perón and Argentina3 even though it involved a former United States President and the relations with 1 Alexander, 53.

    Case Study CX005.1 Last revised: February 24, 2014 Selena y los Dinos Justin Ward Selena Quintanilla-Perez was born in Texas on April 16, 1971 into an English-speaking Latino family of Jehovah’s Witnesses.1 Her father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. (“Quintanilla”) was an enterprising man who had spent his youth trying to make it in the Texas music scene as manager and member of a band called Los Dinos. Quintanilla took a job at a chemical plant when he settled down, but later left to open his own restaurant. During his (ultimately unsuccessful) effort to keep the struggling business afloat, he had the musically talented nine- year-old Selena perform live music to help attract customers. Although the restaurant failed, Selena continued to perform under the name Selena y los Dinos. She learned to sing in Spanish and began recording with local producers. After the eighth grade, she dropped out of school to pursue her musical career. The band remained in many ways a family affair: Quintanilla (once described as “the ultimate stage father”2) managed the group, her brother A.B. played bass guitar and wrote many of Selena’s songs, and she married the band’s guitarist, Chris Perez. By 1993, Selena was an award-winning Tejano singer and a rising star, having signed a record deal with Capitol/EMI (which had asked Selena to release albums as “Selena,” not “Selena y los Dinos”). She would go on to further musical success and to open a chain of boutique stores called Selena Etc. On February 7, 1993, Selena y los Dinos gave a free concert at Corpus Christi Memorial Coliseum.

More than 30 years after his last solo exhibition in a public collection in Germany, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is presenting a major survey devoted to this American artist. Featuring more than 100 works, the exhibition is the first to focus on Basquiat’s relationship to music, text, film and television, placing his work within a broader cultural context. In the 1970s and 1980s, Basquiat teamed up with Al Diaz in New York to write graffiti statements across the city under the pseudonym SAMO©. Soon he was collaging baseball cards and postcards and painting on clothing, doors, furniture and on improvised canvases. Basquiat collaborated with many artists of his time, most famously Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. He starred in the film New York Beat with Blondie’s singer Debbie Harry and performed with his experimental band Gray. Basquiat created murals and installations for New York nightclubs like Area and Palladium and in 1983 he produced the hip-hop record Beat Bop with K-Rob and Rammellzee. Having come of age in the Post-Punk underground scene in Lower Manhattan, Basquiat conquered the art world and gained widespread international recognition, becoming the youngest participant in the history of the documenta in 1982. His paintings were hung beside works by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter and Cy Twombly.
