It is rich in germplasm and more than 2000 cultivars have been cultivated through hybridization and natural selection. Microsporogenesis and male gametogenesis in the anther are important for hybridization in flowering plants. However, little is known about the cytological events, especially related to the stamen, during the reproduction of the lotus. -
Phylogeny and Classification of the Melastomataceae and Memecylaceae

A systematic analysis of the Melastomataceae, a pantropical family of about 4200- 4500 species in c. 166 genera, and their traditional allies, the Memecylaceae, with c. 430 species in six genera, suggests a phylogeny in which there are two major lineages in the Melastomataceae and a clearly distinct Memecylaceae. Melastomataceae have close affinities with Crypteroniaceae and Lythraceae, while Memecylaceae seem closer to Myrtaceae, all of which were considered as possible outgroups, but sister group relationships in this plexus could not be resolved. Based on an analysis of all morph- ological and anatomical characters useful for higher level grouping in the Melastoma- taceae and Memecylaceae a cladistic analysis of the evolutionary relationships of the tribes of the Melastomataceae was performed, employing part of the ingroup as outgroup. Using 7 of the 21 characters scored for all genera, the maximum parsimony program PAUP in an exhaustive search found four 8-step trees with a consistency index of 0.86. Because of the limited number of characters used and the uncertain monophyly of some of the tribes, however, all presented phylogenetic hypotheses are weak. A synapomorphy of the Memecylaceae is the presence of a dorsal terpenoid-producing connective gland, a synapomorphy of the Melastomataceae is the perfectly acrodro- mous leaf venation. Within the Melastomataceae, a basal monophyletic group consists of the Kibessioideae (Prernandra) characterized by fiber tracheids, radially and axially included phloem, and median-parietal placentation (placentas along the mid-veins of the locule walls). -

Studienblatt: Masterstudium Ökologie Betreut von: Prof. Dr. Jürg Schönenberger Abstract Pollen as the only reward for pollinating bees is characteristic for most Neotropical Melastomataceae. For eight genera belonging to four different tribes, however, nectar secretion by stomatal openings, pseudo-tubular flowers and both vertebrate and invertebrate pollinators other than bees have been reported. The pseudo-tubular flowers of the mainly Andean genus Axinaea (tribe Merianieae) are characterized by distinctive bulbous connec- tive appendages. It has been hypothesized that these appendages may bear nectar secreting structures, may play a key role in the process of pollination, or may serve as food-bodies to attract pollinators other than bees. To test these hypotheses, I have investigated floral the structure of five Axinaea species in detail using MicroCT, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Light Microscopy. Field studies on the breeding system and pollinator monitoring of Axinaea confusa have been conducted in a montane rainforest in southern Ecuador. Like nectar producing Merianieae, Axinaea bears stomatal openings on the inner wall of the hypanthium, but the flowers are not nectariferous. The main finding of my investigations is that instead of a nectar reward, the pollination mechanism of Axinaea involves floral food- bodies in combination with bird pollination. Different species of tanagers and flower piercers (Thraupidae) are attracted by the brightly coloured bulbous connective appendages in the flowers. However, these appendages do not only function as attractant and food reward for the pollinating birds, but are also an integral part of a complex pollination mechanism which is best described as a “bellows-mechanism”. -

Integrated within a flower, labile floral characters produce different phenotypes that promote variable interactions with pollinators. Thus, investigation of floral evolution may help infer potential historic transitions in pollinator modes and ecological pressures that generated present diversity. This study aims to explore morphological evolution of flowers in Miconieae, a species-rich Neotropical tribe within family Melastomataceae. Despite a constrained floral plan, Melastomataceae manage to achieve a variety of floral traits appealing to diverse pollinator types, with majority of the species requiring specialized “buzz pollination” by bees. However, previous research in Miconieae documented several instances of convergent evolution of phenotypes associated with generalized pollination strategies. I explore morphological evolution of Miconieae in a phylogenetic context to understand how diversification relates to different phenotypes, and how common evolution of generalized pollination systems is within this tribe. -

Abstract: As part of a series of papers focusing on the description of immature stages of the genus Catasticta Butler, 1870, we here describe for the first time the immature stages of the high Andean butterfly Catasticta incerta incerta (Dognin, 1888), from Azuay province in southern Ecuador. The host plant was identified as an aerial hemi-parasitic mistletoe Antidaphne andina Kuijt (Santalaceae), which is restricted to high elevations in the Andes. In the predominantly Neotropical tribe Myrteae (Myrtaceae), species of two genera, Acca and Myrrhinium, offer fleshy, sugary petals to the consumption of birds that otherwise eat fruits, thus pollinating the plants in an unusual plant-animal interaction. The phylogenetic position of these genera has been problematic, and therefore, so was the understanding of the evolution of this interaction. Here we include new sequences of Myrrhinium atropurpureum in a comprehensive molecular phylogeny based on a balanced sample of two plastid and two nuclear markers, with the aim of providing the historical framework of pollination by frugivorous birds in Myrteae. We developed 13 flower and inflorescence characters that comprehensively depict the macroscopic morphological components of this interaction. Bayesian and parsimony phylogenies concur in placing both Acca and Myrrhinium in a clade with Psidium species; with Myrrhinium sister to Psidium. Mapping of morphological characters indicated some degree of convergence (e.g., fleshy petals, purplish display) but also considerable divergence in key characters that point to rather opposing pollination strategies and also different degrees of specialization in Acca versus Myrrhinium. Pollination by frugivorous birds represents a special case of mutualism that highlights the evolutionary complexities of plant-animal interactions. -

Scott Armbruster7, Yannick Staeder1 & Jürg Schönenberger 1 Angiosperm flowers have diversified in adaptation to pollinators, but are also shaped by developmental and genetic histories. The relative importance of these factors in structuring floral diversity remains unknown. We assess the effects of development, function and evo- lutionary history by testing competing hypotheses on floral modularity and shape evolution in Merianieae (Melastomataceae). Merianieae are characterized by different pollinator selec- tion regimes and a developmental constraint: tubular anthers adapted to specialized buzz- pollination. Our analyses of tomography-based 3-dimensional flower models show that pollinators selected for functional modules across developmental units and that patterns of floral modularity changed during pollinator shifts. Further, we show that modularity was crucial for Merianieae to overcome the constraint of their tubular anthers through increased rates of evolution in other flower parts. Here we present an annotated catalogue of the angiosperm family Melastomataceae from this diverse massif. The annotated species list is based largely on the treatment of Melastomataceae for the forthcoming Catalogue of the Plants of Colombia together with several floristic data sources, confirmed specimen records held in different herbaria, and recent field work. The catalogue of Melastomataceae presented here includes 20 genera and 86 species, 21 of which are endemic to Colombia and 15 of those are endemic to the SNSM. We also include floristic similarity analyses to compare the species of Melastomataceae from the SNSM with those from other Colombian biogeographic regions and other Neotropical countries or regions.
