    1 Kylie Garrett Dr. Hyde HIST 1493 7 November 2018 Topic statement: How did the 1968 Miss America Pageant protests exemplify the values of women during this time period, and how did the feminist movement affect other civil rights movements at the time? Protesting Miss America “The 4-H club county fair, [a place] where the nervous animals are judged for teeth, fleece, etc., and where the best ‘specimen’ gets the blue ribbon.”1 This was the metaphor published in the New York Free Press by the Women’s Liberation Movement describing the ​ ​ Miss America Pageant in 1968. The Miss America protests were used by women as a way to gain acceptance and support for women’s equality. The women of the Women’s Liberation Movement felt that the Miss America Pageant was sexist, racist, and held women to an unrealistic beauty standard. National media coverage allowed women to exemplify their values of equality, opportunity, and natural beauty, and launched the beginning of the feminist movement we know today. Because of the success women attained during this time period, other civil rights movements were encouraged to continue their fight and achieve a success of their own. The Miss America Pageant was created as a way to reflect the gradual successes women were having in the United States by expanding both their political and social rights. In Atlantic 1 Women’s Liberation, “No More Miss America,” New York Free Press, September 5, 1968. ​ ​ ​ 2 City in 1921, several businessmen put on an event titled “Fall Frolic” in order to lure vacationers into their area and increase their personal revenue.2 This pageant-like show demonstrated women’s “professional beauties, civic beauties and inter-city beauties,” and became a huge success as the event grew larger and more popular each year.3 The newspapers and media at the time portrayed these new pageants as popularity contests and began to enter in contestants of their own in order to increase awareness and popularity for their personal benefit.

This dissertation explores how and why many Christians found the organization an institution worthy of partnership with the church. It examines three aspects of Christian involvement in the contest: the long history of beauty pageants, the persistent emphasis on individual physical attractiveness, and the idea of witness in southern evangelical culture. It argues that after 1965, at least two factors enabled the unlikely marriage of Christians and the Miss America Organization: the perceived threat of second-wave feminism and evangelicalism’s increasing desire to engage culture.

    Beauty: The Inner Beast Beautiful women repulse me. No. Beautiful women who build a life solely on the basis of their looks repulse me. Although I do not consider myself stunning, I am all right. I have had my fair share of compliments from strangers and the occasional double take in subway stations, but I am no Helen of Troy. The only war anyone would fight for me would be for my extensive collection of science fair medals— not my looks. I dislike Helen’s mystifying powers on men, her beauty that spawned the upheaval of the entire Trojan nation. Yet even in all the praise, empowerment, and admiration, Helen viewed her beauty as a curse. You could say I am a feminist. Of course I believe women should have the same rights as me, but not extra loopholes that favor a more pleasant face over another. There is a reason why the secretaries of large corporate firms or even the dentist’s office are eerily all attractive women. The image is all too familiar: the dainty high heels only shadowed by the dress shirt with the first few buttons casually undone all tucked into a tight business skirt. They are nice to look at, to talk to, and to decorate any boring firm with the prospect of sexual tension. The feminist in me loathes that loophole that gives women the option of living on their looks. I detest that women are objectified. What I detest more are women who let themselves be objectified. Yet I have spent hours admiring the symmetric faces of Helen-esque models in magazines, the flawless hair that naturally frames their delicate yet extraordinarily fit shoulders.

Ray A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics Bryn Mawr College December 2017 Abstract Language has the power to unite and uplift societies as well as divide and exclude. In this investigation I identify how language is incessantly utilized as a tool to exclude, erase, and publicly shame Black women within the African diaspora, and specifically in the United States and Ecuador.     FORUM FEMINISM, MISS AMERICA, AND MEDIA MYTHOLOGY BONNIE J. DOW “I’m not contemplating any Maidenform bonfires, but they could certainly use some- thing around here” —Joanna (Katharine Ross) in The Stepford Wives (1975) hen Joanna, the central protagonist in The Stepford Wives, utters these words Win a conversation with her best friend, she is discussing the formation of a feminist consciousness-raising group. Both women feel stifled by the atmosphere in Stepford, Connecticut, the New York suburb to which they recently have moved with their families. In Stepford, as anyone familiar with the film remembers, for- merly strong-willed, dynamic women are mysteriously transformed into perfectly groomed, robotic beings obsessed with housekeeping and the sexual satisfaction of their husbands, a fate that Joanna and her friend are desperate to avoid. The Stepford Wives was released in 1975, at the end of what historian Alice Echols has called the peak period of radical feminist activity in the United States,1 and the second wave of feminism is, in many ways, the subtext required for making complete sense of the film. Seen in its original historical context, The Stepford Wives is a feminist horror film. It argues that American men, given the opportunity, would erase their wives’ individuality by literally killing them and replacing them with identical automatons dedicated to domestic chores and sexual service. Despite their invocation of femi- nism, Joanna and her friend are no match for the forces of evil, and both become Stepford wives by the end of the film. Tracking how “girls” replace “women” and become favored icons of feminism in contemporary culture, this dissertation analyzes the shifts in cultural depictions of girlhood in the 1960s. Examining magazines and newspapers’ coverage of Beatlemania in 1964 and 1965, Twiggy’s successful modeling career from 1966 to 1968, and the eventful Miss America pageants from 1968 to 1970, I find that mass media and popular culture institutions presented a series of new images and themes about girlhood that featured romantic desires for male idols, challenges to prevailing definitions of fashionable femininity, and an outspoken approach to controversial political and social issues. These new themes exemplify that the differences between girlhood and womanhood intensified along with the development of feminist movements in the 1960s, when mass media invested in constructing a new girlhood identity as a way to fend off changing views of womanhood and uphold some elements of traditional femininity.

BACKGROUND: The Miss America Pageant began as a publicity stunt—the brainchild of Atlantic City businessmen in 1921 who were trying to keep tourists in town after Labor Day. The first event lasted two days, concluding with a beachfront parade called the Bather’s Revue. Margaret Gorman, a slight, freckled sixteen-year-old from Washington, D.C. took home the first crown. “Margaret Gorman represents the type of womanhood America needs,” the New York Times declared, “strong, red-blooded, able to shoulder the responsibilities of homemaking and motherhood. It is in her type that the hope of the country rests.” Over the next ninety years, the Miss America Pageant evolved into a national tradition which has played a pivotal role in defining the ideal American woman, seeking to reconcile what at times seems like diametrically opposing goals—focusing on women’s physical beauty while offering real financial and educational prospects; promoting traditional gender roles while encouraging women's independence; glorifying feminine modesty while trading on female sexuality.
