MEMORIES PRE AND PAST PARTITION Our ancestors belonged to village Nangal Khurd, near Malpur in Hoshiyarpur. My great, great grandfather was married in a family of village Sasoli wherein the inhabitants were Brahamin agriculturist and 70% Muslims who used to work in the fields as labourers on barter system. The family had only daughter and after the demise of the in-laws. my great great grandfather had to come to the village and settled there. My grandfather was the eldest with two younger brothers, the youngster being Amar Saheed Ram Rakha Bali ji, who laid down his life in fight for freedom. His staue was installed in front of the Cellular Jail (Kala Paani), Port Blair and is still there for inspiration of the country men visiting there. My father inherited the education inspiration, from his uncle Amar Saheed Ram Rakha Bali ji, who had graduated from F C College, Lahore. In those times the only High School available was in Malpur at a distance of more than 20 kms. Even for primary education one had to go to another village which was about 5 kms away from Sasoli. After matriculation he joined the Maharaja Randhir Singh Inter College of Kapurthala State. Securing high marks he got admission in FC College Lahore. He did his B.A and Hons in two subject’s viz. Mathematics and English BT from Central training College Lahore. After passing, he joined the S.D High School, Gol Bagh, Lahore as second Head Master. By merit of his talents and teaching capabilities, he was selected by the Sanatan Dharam, Pratinidhi Sabha, Punjab, the President of which was, respected Shri Goswami Ganesh Dutt ji, and was promoted and posted as Head Master, Layallpur. The school had about 2000 students and was one of the best schools in the whole of Punjab in academics and sports. The school had the distinction of winning Prizes and scholarships in education and sports and there were three big almirahs full of trophies and shields till our family left for India in May 1947. In the year 1945. I still remember that in the matriculation exam of that year in the whole of Punjab, Mohammad Nawaaz of the school topped and two others Shri Santosh Sehgal and Shri Mohinder Singh Dhillon, were placed in the first ten toppers. It is a coincidence that in 1945 in Red Fort Delhi the famous INA case against Mohan Singh Dhillon, Prem Sehgal and Shah Nawaz was going on, and ultimately they were honorably acquitted and in newspapers due to similarity in names the students were highly admired. After partition, we stayed with our relatives in various cities i.e Jalandhar, Ludhiana and finally settled in Hoshiyarpur. Due to the meritorious record of the school at Layallapur, and a burning desire, after great difficulty he managed to establish a school naming it Layallpur Sanathan Dharam Senior Secondary School at Bassi Daulat Khan in Hoshiyarpur. The School has been functioning in a grand manner in all the academic faculties as well as in sports and with all basic amenities for girls and boys. With blessings of Almighty and parents, we the six brothers and two sisters are leading a dignified and happy life.
