  • Contemporary Evidence on Sikh Rites and Rituals in the Eighteenth Century
179 Karamjit K. Malhotra: Sikh Rites and Rituals Contemporary Evidence on Sikh Rites and Rituals in the Eighteenth Century Karamjit K Malhotra Panjab University, Chandigarh ________________________________________________________________ This paper on Sikh rites and rituals analyses the whole range of contemporary evidence on the eighteenth century in three phases for observing continuity and change in the rites of initiation, birth, marriage and death. The Sikh sources are relevant for all the three phases, the Persian sources associated with the Mughal empire are relevant for the first, and the European accounts for the third. Two major findings emerge from this study: the continuity of normative statements on Sikh rites and rituals in which the Brahman priest and Brahmanical scriptures had no role, and there was a large degree of correspondence between the normative statements and empirical evidence on Sikh rites and rituals. _______________________________________________________________ Introduction No historian of the Sikhs has brought rites and rituals of the Sikhs during the eighteenth century directly into focus. Harjot Oberoi, for example, looks upon rituals as ‘a key element in the construction of religious identity’, and underlines the importance of the ‘rites of passage’ for Sikh identity. He maintains that prior to the Khalsa transformation, the Sikhs possessed only a fluid identity, and did not think of ‘a distinct set of life-cycle rituals’. The Khalsa introduced new rites related to birth, initiation and death which ‘endowed an individual with a new and bounded identity’ to demarcate the Khalsa from the rest of the ‘civil society’. Oberoi presents these rituals in a few paragraphs on the Chaupa Singh Rahitnama which he places between 1750 and 1765.

  • I Introduction to Bhairava-Kali- Abhichara
I Introduction to Bhairava-Kali- Abhichara ABHICHARA India is like a treasury full of precious stones shining with all the colours of the rain - bow. Hundreds of peoples, each of them rich in their unique ethnic culture, art, tra - ditions and customs, have been living in that country for ages. Such a number and diversity of religions as can be found in India is impossible to meet in any other country. India is the birthplace of Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Islam, Christian - ity and Shamanism can also be found there; Judaism and Zoroastrianism are related to India as well. However, most of India’s population practices Hinduism, which is a colourful multitude of various spiritual movements united by certain principles. India gave us sophisticated medicine, the first grammar treatises in history, the dec - imal numeration system, a number of algebraic, geometric and trigonometric con - cepts, chess, highly developed religious and philosophical systems, masterpieces of world art, and much more. Within the colourful diversity of cultural, geographic, religious, caste and social formations of India, there evolved and flowered unique mystical-magical traditions: namely, the tantric ones. The main definAinbgh fiechataurrae’ of all tantric schools is their practical mysticism based on a detailed and multileveled study of doctrinal concepts of sacred texts and on religious-magical practices in - cluding theurgy and mantic arts. The applied mystical-magical aspect of Tantrism is called ‘ in Sanskrit. The root ‘abhi’ can be translated into English as ‘action’, and ‘char’ - as ‘movement’, ‘following’ or ‘way’. Thus, it can be said that Abhichara is ‘the way of performing actions’.

The very mention of Anandpur Sahib creates a thrill in the veins of a genuine Sikh, his hair begin standing on the ends, his blood begins throbbing in his biceps, and, he feels himself in unexplainable moment of bliss. Paying obeisance at Kesgarh Sahib immediately reminds of the revelation of Khalsa, the Pun} Piaray and Khandey Di Pahul. A visit to Anandgarh fort reminds of the martial music of the Chandi Di Vaar. Damalgarh becomes a living scene of Sahibzadas learning sword wielding. Thara Sahib seems to be receiving Bhai Kirpa Ram (Singh) Dutt and 16 Brahmins from Kashmir. Guru De Mahal remind of Mata Nanaki, Mata Gujari, Mata Jeet Kaur, Mata Sunder Kaur and Mata Sahib Kaur preparing sacred food for the visitors to the City ofBliss. At Takht Damdama Sahib, we feel Guru Sahib still holding his court and Bhai Mani Singh giving final touches to Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Da Lahore still seems to be celebrating the marriage of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and Mata Jeet Kaur.

  • PREFACE This Work on the Sikh Misals Mainly Relates to The
PREFACE This work on the Sikh Misals mainly relates to the eighteenth century which is, undoubtedly, the most eventful period in the Sikh history. It has been done at the instance of Dr Ganda Singh, one of India’s top-ranking historians of his time and the most distinguished specialist of the eighteenth century Punjab history. For decades, there had been nothing nearer his heart than the desire of writing a detailed account of the Sikh Misals. Due to his preoccupation with many contro- versial issues of the Sikh history he kept on postponing this work to a near future. But a day came when the weight of years and failing health refused to permit him to undertake this work. He asked me to do it and magnanimously placed at my disposal his unrivalled life-long collection of Persian manuscripts and other rare books relating to the period. Thus, with the most invaluable source material at my working desk my job became easier. I have always felt incensed at the remarks that the eighteenth century was a dark period of Sikh history. The more I studied this period the more unconvinced I felt about these remarks Having devoted some three decades exclusively to this period I came to the irrefutable conclusion that it is impossible to find a more chivalrous and more glorious period in the history of the world than the eighteenth century Punjab. In the display of marvelous Sikh national character this period is eminently conspicuous. In utter resourcelessness and confronted with the mighty Mughal government and then the greatest military genius of the time in Asia, in the person of Ahmad Shah Durrani, the Sikhs weathered all storms for well-nigh half a century with utmost fighting capacity, overwhelming zeal and determination, unprecedented sacrifice and unshakable faith in their ultimate victory.
