Jakobsson is an epic tale of migration, telling the story of how the arrival of new immigrants from the most troubled corners of the world, co- mes to change the face of Sweden forever. Based on the novel "The Night Swallows the Days" by Finnish author Asko Sahlberg. "Död åt fnndjävlar", or "Death to the Bloody Finns". This is what it says on the wall of a depot engulfed in fames. Here we meet our man – the protagonist of our story, working on the assembly line, putting together a Volvo. With the 1980s fast approaching, JAKOBSSON has already spent several years slaving away at this encampment. He has long since had enough of the Swedes. As a Sweden Finn he has had plenty of struggles after the "big move": no job done or gesture made for the greater good of the Kingdom ever seems to be enough, nor does it give him any pleasure for that matter. And that’s what it was all supposed to be about: Gothenburg is said to have been founded as the apple of Gustav II Adolf’s eye, 400 years ago. And just as the King stood on top of the Utrella in central Gothenburg before him, Jakobsson had come here with dreams of building and fortifying the city. His role, which Jakobsson now curses, had been meant to provide him with an identity. And that had been the case until ROBBAN arrived in town, driving a wedge between the mumbling loner and the other Finns in town. He told Jakobsson, "You may be ugly, but there might be other kinds of work out here for a big brute like you. We just have to work out the details." It explores developments in recent German filmmaking in the context of the increasing globalisation of media industries and images and in the context of contemporary cinema’s relationship to other media forms. Stu- dents will explore the dynamics of recent German cinema, including its successes at major award ceremonies and at film festivals, its relationship to Hollywood and to other international cinemas, its distinct approach to questions of the audience, of auteurism and of production, and to transnational images, particularly con- cerning the emergence of Turkish-German filmmaking. Students will also address the representation of politics, terrorism, history, heritage and the national past, the engagement with issues of performance, gender and sexuality, the use of genre and popular commercial film styles, and the re-emergence of a ‘counter cinema’ in the work of the ‘Berlin School’ and after. Seminar work on current trends will allow students to work independently to research an individual case study of a chosen film and its significance to contemporary German cinema. • Season of the Witch Film Production Notes
SEASON OF THE WITCH Production Notes SEASON OF THE WITCH Synopsis Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage (National Treasure, Ghost Rider) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Hellboy II, Sons of Anarchy) star in this supernatural action adventure about a heroic Crusader and his closest friend who return home after decades of fierce fighting, only to find their world destroyed by the Plague. The church elders, convinced that a girl accused of being a witch is responsible for the devastation, command the two to transport the strange girl to a remote monastery where monks will perform an ancient ritual to rid the land of her curse. They embark on a harrowing, action-filled journey that will test their strength and courage as they discover the girl‟s dark secret and find themselves battling a terrifyingly powerful force that will determine the fate of the world. The years of brutal warfare in the name of God have stripped Behmen (Cage) of his taste for bloodshed—and his loyalty to the Church. Looking forward to a quiet retirement, Behmen and his comrade-in-arms Felson (Perlman) are bewildered to find their homeland deserted, unaware that Europe has been decimated by the Black Plague. While searching for food and supplies at the Palace at Marburg, the two knights are apprehended and called before the local Cardinal (Christopher Lee) to explain their unscheduled return from the East. The dying Cardinal threatens the pair with prison for desertion, unless they agree to a dangerous mission. The Cardinal‟s dungeon holds a young woman (Claire Foy) accused of being a witch who brings the Plague with her.
