Mannerist Architecture and the Baroque In this lecture I want to discuss briefly the nature of Mannerist architecture and then begin to consider baroque art. We have already paid some attention to Mannerist painting and sculpture; and have seen how in the work of painters like Rosso Fiorentino, Bronzino and Parmigianino; and sculptors like Giovanni Bologna and Cellini, that after 1527, classical forms came to be used in a spirit alien to them; each artist developing a highly personal style containing capricious, irrational and anti-classical effects. Although the term Mannerism was first applied to painting before it came to be used to describe the period style between 1527 and 1600; it is possible to find similar mannerist qualities in the architecture of the time. And again it is Michelangelo whose work provides, as it were, a fountainhead of the new style. Rosso’s Decent from the Cross, which we have taken as one of the first signs of Mannerist strain and tension in the High Renaissance world, was painted in 1521. Three years later Michelangelo designed his Laurentian Library,* that is in 1524. It was designed to house the library of the Medicis; and we may take it as the first important building exhibiting Mannerist features.* We can best consider these features by comparing the interior of the library with the interior of an early Renaissance building such as Brunelleschi’s S. Lorenzo. Consider his use of columns. In Brunelleschi they are free standing. When he uses pilasters they project out from a wall as you expect a buttress to. -

Press release A WORK FOR THE ARA PACIS MIMMO PALADINO MUSIC BY BRIAN ENO Two great protagonists of contemporary art and music together again in Rome for a site-specific event designed for the Ara Pacis Museum managed by Achille Bonito Oliva, James Putnam e Federica Pirani Rome March 10th, 2008 From March 11th to May 11th 2008, the first site-specific event organised for the Ara Pacis Museum, the exhibition/event “A work for the Ara Pacis. Mimmo Paladino | Music by Brian Eno” – managed by Achille Bonito Oliva, James Putnam and Federica Pirani, under the auspices of Comune di Roma, Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali Sovraintendenza ai Beni Culturali and organised by Zètema Progetto Cultura in line with Valentina Bonomo’s project – will be an opportunity for the two unquestioned protagonists of contemporary culture to meet again and work together after almost 10 years since their first joint project at the London Round House in 1999. The idea for “A Work for the Ara Pacis” is to create a single installation reconciling two different forms of art – Paladino’s figurative art and Eno’s music – and have it specifically designed for the Ara Pacis Musem. The project is further completed by the catalogue for the event edited by Gli Ori, Prato, and also titled: “A Work for the Ara Pacis. Mimmo Paladino | Music by Brian Eno”. More than 160 pages (in English and in Italian alike) of critical essays and pictures, including some extraordinary photographs taken by Ferdinando Scianna, who personally documented and followed every step of the exhibition. The critical essays include Ara Artis by Achille Bonito Oliva and Paladino/Eno at Ara Pacis by James Putnam. -
European Literature: Renaissance and Reformation
Grade 12 ► Unit 2 European Literature: Renaissance and Reformation This six-week unit introduces students to the literature of the Renaissance and Reformation, exploring its continuity with and departure from the literature of the Middle Ages. OVERVIEW o Students consider Renaissance writers’ interest in ancient Greek and Latin literature and myth; their preoccupation with human concerns and life on earth; their aesthetic principles of harmony, balance, and divine proportion; and exceptions to all of these. This leads to a discussion of how literary forms themselves reflect religious, philosophical, and aesthetic principles. As students compare the works of the Renaissance with those of the Middle Ages, they will recognize the overlap and continuity of these periods. In addition, they consider how the outstanding works of the era transcend their time and continue to inspire readers and writers. The English Renaissance of the seventeenth century includes additional works by William Shakespeare. In their essays, students may analyze the ideas, principles, and form of a literary work; discuss how a work bears attributes of both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; discuss convergences of Renaissance literature and arts; or pursue a related topic of interest. FOCUS STANDARDS o These Focus Standards have been selected for the unit from the Common Core State Standards. RL.11-12.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including words with multiple meanings or language that is particularly fresh, engaging, or beautiful. (Include Shakespeare as well as other authors.) Recent Studies in the English Renaissance
KatherineSEL 57, 1 (Winter Eggert 2017): 181–225 181181 ISSN 0039-3657 © 2017 Rice University Recent Studies in the English Renaissance KATHERINE EGGERT The exercise of reviewing books on nondramatic Renaissance literature released over twelve months from August 2015 until August 2016 feels a bit like speculating on the futures market. Analyzing the way things have recently been, I am also guessing at what is to come. (Buy ecocriticism, sell globalism, is my guess. I explain further below.) I hasten to point out, however, that I am completing this essay just after the 2016 U.S. presidential election, whose results proved me—like many, many others—abjectly inept at predicting the future. Take my forecasting with due caution. I begin by observing that the books that arrived for my review did not surprise me in terms of their topics, since they reflect the kinds of concerns that have been aired recently at major confer- ences in Renaissance studies. The number of books in certain areas did, however, surprise me to some extent. Although the vagaries of publishing mean that any given year might see a coincidental surge in one type of study and temporary dearth in another, three trends seem evident: John Donne may be shoul- dering aside Milton as the Renaissance nondramatic poet about whom books may be written and marketed; cultural-studies books bearing titles fitting the formula “Such-and-Such Cultural Group, Practice, or Object in Early Modern Culture” are on the wane; and some of the best current work in the field connects literature to science (including the “dismal science,” economics), material- ity, and/or knowledge practices. -

Vol. I, No. 1 (2020) and Other Exhibitions Clarissa Ricci Towards a Contemporary Venice Biennale: Reassessing the Impact of the 1993 Exhibition Abstract This paper argues that Cardinal Points of Art, directed by Achille Bonito Oliva has been decisive in the formation of the contemporary Venice Biennale. The 45th Venice Biennale, (1993) was memorable for many reasons: the first exhibi- tion of Chinese painters in Venice, its transnational approach, and because it was the last time the Aperto exhibition was shown. Nevertheless, this was a complex and much criticised Biennale whose specific characteristics are also connected to the process of reform that the institution had been undergoing since the 1970s. The analysis of the exhibition starts with the examination of this legacy and continues by questioning Bonito Oliva’s curatorial contribution in order to define the specific features which helped to shape the contemporary Venice Biennale. When classical learning was threatened with extinction some knowledge of past achievements was rescued through such compendia as Pliny's Natural History or Isidorus' Etymologies. Today we must hope for similar success from similar compendia while new and urgent topics are crowding out the memories of our civilization. The volume under review presents on its 287 pages of text a survey of 500 years of European architecture, painting, sculpture, prose, poetry, drama and music, mentioning close on 500 artists, authors and composers and giving such diverse information as the tradition of the ottava rima in poetry from Boccaccio to Wieland and the exact number of string quartets, piano, cello and violin sonatas (but not trios) composed by Beethoven. The scaffolding which is used by the author to accommodate this vast amount of material was erected by art historians in the nineteen twenties. It was then that the labels for styles - Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Neo-C1assicism and Romanticism -were increasingly used to characterize historical periods, in the Hegelian conviction that a new style always heralds a new 'age', manifesting itself in all aspects of life. It must be said at once that the author does not hold with this assumption.
