Dr. John O'Keefe Class of '63, Wins Nobel Prize and becomes CCNY's 10th Nobel Laureate

Dr. John O'Keefe, a 1963 alumnus, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine October, 2014

The award, by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, is for Professor O'Keefe's co-discovery of cells "that constitute a positioning system in the brain." The Guardian newspaper dubbed it an "inner GPS" in the brain.

The New York native is Director of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre in Neural Circuits and Behaviour at University College London (UCL) in England. He will share the Nobel Prize with the Norwegian husband-and-wife team May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser.

After earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from City College, Professor O'Keefe received his doctorate in physiological psychology from McGill University, Canada, in 1967. He later moved to England for postdoctoral training at UCL and was appointed Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience there in 1987.

Dear Alumni and Friends –

Fall semester is underway at City College, and as you can imagine, the campus is full of engagement, excitement, and celebration. City College continues to be recognized as one of the best higher education institutions in the nation. We are featured in the Princeton Review’s 2015 edition of The Best 379 Colleges. Forbes has named City College one of America’s top 100 colleges in the Northeast for 2014, and U.S. News & World Report ranks us #1 in racial and ethnic diversity.

The City College incoming freshmen class has the highest mean GPA among those of all the CUNY senior colleges. Additionally, nine high- achieving students from upper Manhattan and the Bronx are the latest recipients of the President's Community Scholars program, which I started in 2010, to study free at CCNY. To date, 44 students have received scholarships from the program.

Recent research by City College faculty shows why we continue to attract the best scholars. Their work ranges from using brainwaves to predict audience reaction to using the mammalian nose to detect chemicals known as aldehydes. Associate Professor of English Emily Raboteau has won the 2014 American Book Award for “Searching for Zion” (Grove Press, 2014), and Division of Humanities and Arts Dean Eric Weiz has been named Distinguished Professor.

Upcoming events include a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit on American soil, Antoni Gaudi’s famous “La Sagrada Familia” on display now through May 8, 2015 in the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture. We also celebrate the100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Jonas Salk, one of our most distinguished alumni, through a one-day symposium on October 23 in the Great Hall.

Second Annual Career Conversation with Alumni

We have already reached the required number of alumni registered. The purpose of Career Conversations with Alumni is to give our students a better opportunity to understand what they can do with their mayor, and to explore career opportunities and skills needed to enter into a particular field. They will be interested in your experiences and expertise. Five to ten students will pre-registering for each of the four 30-minute time slots, and their choices on whom to meet will base on the information provided when they registered.

15th Outing for the Northern New Jersey Alumni Chapter – Autumn Day Above the Hudson River in Yonkers, NY

Saturday, November 2, 2014 New Jersey Alumni and friends are all welcome to meet for lunch 12 noon at La Bella Havana, a Cuban restaurant in downtown Yonkers. Then at 2:00 pm the group will visit the Hudson River Museum, the largest museum in Westchester County, featuring exhibits on art of the Hudson River School and history, science, heritage of the region. At this time the museum will showcase an exhibition, “The Peacock and Beauty in Art”, which explores our fascination with these most glamorous of birds, the darling of designers and parties from the 19th century’s Gilded Age, 1920’s Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The exhibit includes works from more than three dozen museums, galleries, and private collections. Parking at the museum is free and there is a $3.00 admission fee for seniors. Interested?
