ABUSING THE LEGACY OF THE HOLOCAUST: THE ROLE OF NGOs IN EXPLOITING HUMAN RIGHTS TO DEMONIZE ISRAEL Gerald M. Steinberg In the wake of the Holocaust, as human rights norms have come to the fore, NGOs have become major actors in international politics in general and in the Arab-Israeli conflict in particular. These organizations and their leaders form an extremely powerful “NGO community” that has propelled the anti-Israeli agenda in international frameworks such as the UN Human Rights Commission and the 2001 UN Conference against Racism in Durban. Through their reports, press releases, and influence among academics and diplomats, these NGOs propagated false charges of “massacre” during the Israeli army’s antiterror operation in Jenin (Defensive Shield) and misrepresent Israel’s separation barrier as an “apartheid wall.” This community has exploited the “halo effect” of human rights rhetoric to promote highly particularistic goals. In most cases small groups of individuals, with substantial funds obtained from non- profit foundations and governments (particularly European), use the NGO frameworks to gain influence and pursue private political agendas, without being accountable to any system of checks and balances. The ideology of anticolonialism (the precursor to today’s antiglobalization) and political correctness is dominant in the NGO community. This ideology accepted the post-1967 pro-Palestinian narrative and images of victimization, while labeling Israel as a neocolo- nialist aggressor. Thus, behind the human rights rhetoric, these NGOs are at the forefront of demonizing Israel and of the new anti-Semitism that seeks to deny the Jewish people sovereign equality. -

Bernstein ’75 Lecture May 3, 2007, 4:30 pm Robert C. Post joined the Yale faculty as the first David Boies Professor of Law. He focuses his teaching and writing on constitutional law, and is a specialist in the area of First Amendment theory and constitutional jurisprudence. Before coming to Yale Law, he had been teaching since 1983 at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Boalt Hall). Post is the author of Constitutional Domains: Democracy, Community, Management and co-author with K. Anthony Appiah, Judith Butler, Thomas C. Grey and Reva Siegel of Prejudicial Appearances: The Logic of American Antidiscrimination Law. He edited or co- edited Civil Society and Government, Human Rights in Political Transitions: Gettysburg to Bosnia, Race and Representation: Affirmative Action, Censorship and Silencing: Practices of Cultural Regulation and Law and Order of Culture. His scholarship has appeared academic journals in the humanities as well as in dozens of important law review articles, many in recent years with his colleague Reva Siegel. Examiner, USA THE IMPACT OF THE COMPACT 1 The big buzz about small formats E VERYTHING MAKES A COMEBACK. There is an eternal renaissance of essential things. In journalism, design, literature and art. Things tend to simplify themselves. As life in big cities turns more chaotic, technology becomes more accessible with wireless, fast communication available to larger mass- es of the population. For the printed media, this translates into smaller formats, more reader-friendly for users who seek simpler storytelling, quicker messages, and who seem to prefer, as in everything else, the smaller packages. In the case of newspapers, we have had to wait a long time and climb a steep mountain to get to this exciting moment in which more newspapers are look- ing at smaller formats as an option. For many, it is already a reality. Conversion from broadsheet to tabloid has paid off: Readers like it, advertisers get used to it faster than anyone thought, and the “wave” of tabloid conversions extends globally. Even the United States is taking a peek into what some of their news- papers will look like in a format other than the huge broadsheet that has served as the canvas for decades. -

Abstract During the past several years, as traditional news operations have faced sharp declines in circulation, advertising, viewership, and audiences, and as they have begun to make a seemingly unrelenting series of cuts in the newsroom budgets, scholars and professionals have been seeking formulas or models designed to reverse the trend. During those same years, many of the major news organizations that dominated the landscape a generation ago, those that David Halberstam called “The Powers That Be,” have lost their leadership role and been absorbed by other companies. This paper argues that while there is good reason to worry about the decline in what might be called “boots-on-the-ground” journalism, there are reasons to be hopeful. While most of those concerned with the topic have urged structural changes in ownership, this paper argues that the key is leadership. To understand the demands on leaders, it is essential to understand which of three motives is most important to the publication’s owners: profits, influence, or personal prestige. Each motive presents distinct challenges and opportunities. Looking at the fate of a number of large media organizations over the past decade, the paper argues that the most important model for success is outstanding leadership that combines a talent for business, entrepreneurship and innovation with a profound commitment to great journalism. -

UNITED NATIONS INTERIM FORCE IN LEBANON (UNIFIL) Naqoura, 3 August 2006 PRESS RELEASE Heavy exchanges of fire continued unabated throughout the UNIFIL area of operation in the past 24 hours. Hezbollah fired the largest number of rockets within a 24-hour period since the outbreak of hostilities from various locations. The IDF continued intensive shelling and aerial bombardment all across the south. It was reported that the IDF made two new ground incursions, entering Lebanese territory in two locations. Yesterday afternoon, they entered again the general area of Marwahin and Ramyah in the western sector. Additional reinforcements were brought in during the night. Heavy shelling and intensive exchanges on the ground are reported this morning from the area of Al Duhayra, west of Marwahin. Last night, the IDF entered Lebanese territory in the general area of Sarda in the eastern sector. Heavy shelling is reported this morning in the area, but no fighting on the ground. The IDF has maintained their presence in five other locations on Lebanese territory, in the general areas of Ayta Ash Shab in the western sector, and Marun Al Ras, Mays Al Jabal, Hula/Markaba, and Kafr Kila/Tayyabah/Addaisseh in the central sector. Intensive shelling is reported in all these areas, except in Marun Al Ras. Sporadic exchanges on the ground were reported in the general area of Tayyabah, Dier Mimess, Hula, and Ayta Ash Shab. The IDF reinforced their presence in the area of Marun Al Ras last night. One rocket from the Hezbollah side impacted directly on a UNIFIL position in the general area of Hula yesterday evening, causing extensive material damage, but no casualties. -
