A contract in football is more than a contract History tells us that professional football contracts were established in England as early as 1885, and they were structured around a transfer and retain system in which at the end of a contract clubs decided whether to retain or transfer a player. These contracts also had a maximum wage value, putting clubs fi rmly in control of players’ careers and earning capacities. But in the early 1960s, with altered labour conditions, contractual freedom and better earning conditions were further enhanced until in 1978, ways to deal with out-of-contract professional players who sought to move to a new club having declined a retaining contract from their current club were introduced. In 1995 further lubricated practices emerged as players were now provided with total contractual freedom for the fi rst time. And it can only logical than in 2020 we move from those primitive times in our thought pattern, we have to think along the lines of accepting that contract power over professional football’s historical timeline and the professional football marketplace has seen the pendulum of power swing away from the football authorities toward the player with regard to professional contracts. The sole reason we applaud Bantu FC coach, Atang ‘Bob’ Mafoso, who has come out to say he believes strongly that Hlompho Kalake’s contract negotiations became the issue just because it was one of last to be handled by the club - and not because it was dif erent from other players’ contract, as supporters’ hype made it to be.
