  • Servant of God Felice Tantardini (1898-1991)
SERVANT OF GOD FELICE TANTARDINI (1898-1991) he Servant of God, Brother Felice Tantardini, a lay missionary of the TPontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) in Burma (Myan- mar), was born on June 28, 1898 in Introbio, a small village north of Mi- lan, in the Italian province of Lecco. He was the sixth of eight children. As a soldier in World War I, he was taken prisoner by the Austro-Hungarians and later escaped from a prison camp. He entered the PIME in 1921, and in 1922 was sent to Burma where he remained until his death on March 23, 1991. He would return to his native land only once, in April 1956, but returned to Burma in January the very next year. His earthly story does not include any particularly sensational events. What is striking and arouses admiration is “the extraordinary in the ordinary” in this man, rich in humanity and overflowing with faith; someone who made his life a total gift in the service to the Gospel and to his brothers and sisters. The first virtue that stands out from the overall picture of his life is faith. The criteria that inspired his words, his writings, his actions, and his relationships with people were derived, not from calculation or human logic, but from the Gospel. His gaze was one of faith. We can truly say that he saw and judged things, events, and people with the eyes and the heart of Jesus, whom he loved deeply. In his journey of faith, he let himself be “formed” docilely by an exceptional educator – his “dear Madonna,” whom he invariably invoked with affection and filial tenderness.

  • Pope Advances Sainthood Causes for U.S. African-American Priest, Spanish Martyrs
Pope advances sainthood causes for U.S. African-American priest, Spanish martyrs VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis advanced the sainthood cause of Father Augustus Tolton, who was the first African American diocesan priest in the United States and founder of the first black Catholic parish in Chicago. Signing decrees issued by the Congregation for Saints’ Causes June 11, Pope Francis also formally recognized the martyrdom of three Catholic laywomen who were nurses for the Red Cross and were killed during the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil War. The decree for Father Tolton’s cause recognizes that he lived a life of heroic virtue. Father Tolton had been born into slavery in 1854 on a plantation near Brush Creek, Missouri. After his father left to try to join the Union Army during the Civil War, his mother fled with her three children by rowing them across the Mississippi River and settling in Quincy in the free state of Illinois. There, he was encouraged to discern his vocation to the priesthood by the Franciscan priests who taught him at St. Francis College, now Quincy University. However, he was denied access to seminaries in the United States after repeated requests, so he pursued his education in Rome at what is now the Pontifical Urbanian University. He was ordained for the Propaganda Fidei Congregation in 1886, expecting to become a missionary in Africa. Instead, he was sent to be a missionary in his own country and returned to Quincy, where he served for three years before going to the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1889. Despite rampant racism and discrimination, he became one of the city’s most popular pastors, attracting members of both white and black Catholic communities.

WWW.THEFLORIDACATHOLIC.ORG | Aug. 9-22, 2019 | Volume 80, Number 19 Hope for a nuclear-free world CAROL GLATZ Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY | With the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, the bishops of Japan are renewing calls and prayers to build peace by abolishing nuclear weapons worldwide and pro- moting integral human development. They also expressed hope that Pope Francis’ visit in No- vember and his expected calls for peace will strengthen people’s desire and boost efforts to bring about a nuclear weapon-free world. The first atomic bomb used in warfare was dropped by the United States on Hiroshima Aug. 6, 1945, killing more than 100,000 people. On Aug. 9 another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing about 74,000 people. Japan surrendered Aug. 15. St. John Paul II visited both cities during a February 1981 trip and appealed for peace, calling for the elimina- tion of nuclear weapons around the world. “Let us work hard for peace through justice; let us make a solemn decision now that war no longer be tolerated and seen as a means to resolve disagreements; let us promise with our counterparts that we will tirelessly strive for dis- armament and the abolition of all nuclear arms, let us replace violence and hatred with trust and care,” he said, addressing world leaders. Throughout that speech at the Hiroshima Peace Me- morial Park, St. John Paul repeated that “to remember the past is to work for the future,” which inspired Japan’s bish- ops to observe Ten Days of Prayer for Peace from August 6 to 15 every year.
